Micro weddings are beautifully intimate. For R&R, Queen’s College was where it all started.

Sometimes wedding days can be challenging purely from a video perspective, whether that be rain on equipment, a lack of light in the winter or acoustics. But there’s always magic to be found, particularly in rain! There’s beauty in meaning too and you have to stop and observe what is in front of you, what means most to the couple. Not get fixated on the shots that you imagined you would create, before the rain clouds set in. As creatives, we day dream about our ideas a lot! But capturing a wedding day is more of an organic process. I really wanted to find a way incorporate this recording from when Rina walked down the aisle. But initially I felt you could tell that it’s a mono with an echo from the chapel. But I went with it and saw the beauty in it. To me the echo made it feel like an old found recording. So followed the vintage video aesthetic. I mixed the track with many layers of traffic, rain sounds and suddenly I had an edit that felt true to their experience of their wedding day. I also knew how incredibly close Rina was to her mother, so it seemed fitting to have her introduce the film. This is just the first section, before the film goes into colour.

Nothing seemed to phase these two. Fun was already written, after all the curve balls. I think this shot epitomes their energy. And I have a soft spot for London at night. It’s where I fell in love with my now fiancé.

Hey 👋 Ayla here. This is how happy I feel when my couples tell me they understand that editing takes time and that I need to also look after myself 🤗 You know who you are, you lovely people. Each wedding I film, takes me away from editing for 3-4 days. That’s one whole prep day (yes video takes many hours to prep multiple cameras, recording devices, cards and batteries) often travel days either side, and the shoot day(s) itself. That leaves 3 days in the week to run the business, back up footage, edit and have a day off. But the edits take 1-2 weeks each. The editing process itself is all consuming, in a good way. But it’s not something you can dip in and out of. I need total blocks of concentration, free of distractions. It’s like when you pick your book back up and have to re-read a few previous pages before you get back into it. I will finish shooting in early December, when I’ll enter full edit hibernation through winter. Love it. This is when I try to narrow my focus to the edit in front of me, because it’s quite unproductive to imagine months of work in your head at one time. In most jobs, you’d be overwhelmed if you did that. I imagine a sandwich maker, (I know, bear with me) behind a counter, trying to serve the person in front of them, but it’s impossible to hear because everyone in the queue is shouting their order at once. In fact, the noise slows the process down. They want to serve them all immediately, would love please everyone instantly, but the only sensible way is to focus on one at a time and they need calm to remember the recipe. But they know when the customer takes a bite, they are so very happy they did join the queue. Thankfully I’m better at editing that analogies! 📸 photo by the talented

Outdoor ceremonies used to be a rarity and saved for destination weddings mostly. I’m absolutely loving how many there have been since it became necessary. I hope it’s something that will continue!

Occasionally I break the fourth wall. Usually for higher energy videos. I’m always thinking about the edit when I am shooting- You have to read what kind of energy each wedding has and therefore what you need on the day, to achieve the edit pace that suits that particular couple.

If you’re thinking of booking a family shoot, I have a few spaces left in May and June. It gets a bit crazy after that with weddings all moving to the second half of the year.

So happy to be doing some commercial projects later in the year. I’ve always believed in diversifying, so the pandemic wasn’t about starting something new from scratch, more developing existing areas. Getting out of your bubble brings new skills and refreshed creativity that I can then apply to weddings too.

I cannot wait to be back on the dance at floor Sezincote next year! The hardest thing has been letting go of weddings that have been cancelled, because each booking is not just a job to me but a creative expression I need to complete, a friendship, a commitment, a story that needs to be played out. I recently found out that not all people think in sentences and not all people see images 🤯 if you don’t, that’s not wrong at all, we’re all just wired differently. My bestie thinks in abstract feelings but not words. I hear a narration and I see shoots, down to the camera angles and edits. If I don’t film them, they remain in my head, playing on a loop. How do you think? For example, if I say ‘apple’ can you see the shape? Is there anything beyond that, a colour? Is there texture on the skin? Can you see how the light hits it? And are you thinking in an abstract positive or negative to this questions or more constructed like “no, I can’t” or “yes, I can see the shape”?

Haven’t posted here in a while. I did something radical, I took a break from the grid, without announcing it *cue gasp 😉 and I bet you didn’t even notice did you. Social media is supposed to work for us, but instead we find ourselves working for the algorithm. Relax. *she boldly says as one bot and only her Mum likes this post 😝
