Lately I’ve been seeing loads of super polished, magazine-style wedding photos—which is awesome, don’t get me wrong. But for me, there’s just something special about images that are full of real emotion. The ones that feel honest, full of personality, and totally unfiltered. One of the things I absolutely love capturing is pure fun—those moments of joy and proper belly laughs. So I thought I’d share a few of my favourite ‘fun’ shots from last year. These ones really make me smile.

Light, composition, moment. Just three words, but they’re a pretty big deal to me—three of the (at least) 101 things running through my head when I’m photographing a wedding. Each one on its own can carry an image. Pair any two and you’re probably onto something good. But when all three come together—when the light is just right, the composition falls into place, and the moment is real and unrepeatable—that’s when I’m silently celebrating behind the camera, maybe even looking around for someone to high five. It doesn’t happen all the time, but when it does, it’s magic.

Keeping the portrait vibe going (check out my earlier posts), here’s a bunch of portraits that have a more artsy twist. I’ve played around with off-camera flash, cool lighting, and some silhouettes. I really enjoy making these kinds of shots at weddings, offering couples something special and one-of-a-kind.

As well as silly messing about couples portraits, some couples like something a little more intimate. This kind of portrait usually comes later in the wedding day when things have slowed down and couples have had time to take everything in. Pensive portraits require stillness and presence. Not all couples like or suit this kind of portrait. Whether or not we do this kind of thing at a wedding is covered in our pre-wedding chat.

Personally, I don’t really like having my photo taken. Maybe this is why I really understand how some couples feel on the wedding day. Part of my job is to help people to relax in front of the camera and forget everything else that’s going on around them so that they can enjoy each other’s company and I can take photos that are genuine and honestly represent the personalities of my couples and their relationship. Most of my portrait shoots start with quite a bit of messing about. This kind of thing...
