Sowerby Bridge Fire and Water Creating a landmark centre for arts & culture, education and community in Sowerby Bridge It is an organisation for the community run by the community.

SBF&W is a not-for-profit organisation, initially set up as a limited company, run by a board of trustees and special advisors, all of whom are drawn from the local community. A huge thank you to everyone who submitted their pet photos for the 2026 fundraising calendar. If only there were 150 months in the year!

And thanks to all the local businesses who sponsored a month. The calendar makes a great contribution to our fundraising, helping us buy more materials for the DIY volunteers who are refurbishing the buildings.

Calendars are now on sale at Tesco Sowerby Bridge, Friendly Vets, libraries in King Cross and Sowerby Bridge or contact us at [email protected] or 07843819898 to order one to be posted or delivered locally.

This is Phil Hawdon. He’s the architect behind the plans for redevelopment of Fire and Water. He leads a team of DIY volunteers who come in twice a week and have gradually been transforming the buildings. Phil works his socks off for Fire and Water doing everything and anything: applying for funding, writing business plans, being there for every event and getting the place looking ready by shifting furniture round, showing potential tenants around, sitting on the Sowerby Bridge Development Board, you name it, Phil does it. And this Saturday he’ll be there again at the Christmas Fair conducting two tours of the extensive buildings that are normally closed off.

If you’ve been to one of this year’s festivals and asked to have a look around, now’s your chance! Tours start at 12 and 2pm. Allow plenty of time to browse the stalls, have a go on the tombola and enjoy a mince pie and hot drink though!

Our Story

Fire & Water exists to provide facilitate and promote education, training and culture for the people of Sowerby Bridge.

Our aim is to provide a meeting place for community groups and organisations; support community events such as open days, pop-up events providing services to the community and exhibitions. We want to create a local history room, studio spaces, teaching spaces, studio theatre, venue, band rehearsal space, centre for public events, café, riverside garden and river viewing places, spaces for hire for community groups, workshop space, community storage spaces (e.g. depot for emergency tools and PPE), centre for community anchor facilities, spaces for hire or rent to individuals or groups.

In essence, we want to provide facilities, available to everyone in the community, where no similar facilities exist.
