Lovely warm welcome back at NAFAS Spilsby Flower Club this week who had a few new designs in the Celebrate Summer ‘24 edition. British blooms - all foam free as all my demonstrations are and with the bonus that containers were raffled off too so there’s no excuses to not go foam free when you have all the mechanics 🙂
Something for the weekend? Long distance? No problem …mail order flowers out today…lots of flowery gifts out today !
Come on - give us a YAY! For British growers :) we need all your help right now ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ ☔️ 🌞
UK FLOWER NEWS // Earlier this Summer, British Flower Industry data from 2023 was updated by DEFRA... and it was good news for British growers, florists wanting to work more with British flowers, and the sustainable weddings movement!
🌸 In 2023, the value of stems grown and sold in the UK increased from 2022
💐British production was calculated at £179million, up from £165million in 2022
🌻 Fewer stems (by value) were imported and exported in 2023 too - Imports were £761.8 million, down from £869.1 Million in 2022!
This means that as a proportion of the total stems sold in the UK last year, more were British than in previous years. In fact the proportion of British flowers has been increasing now for over 5 years. It’s still the minority of what’s sold in the UK but UK growers are consistently gaining market share.
The stats are revealing in other ways too - Check our Harriet's blog post about the numbers (with links to the data sheets for your own perusal) where she explains why we shouldn’t be talking percentages, ESPECIALLY OLD INACCURATE ONES!, and other issues that arise from looking at the stats! Ultimately, it’s a good news story for those committed to British flowers!
Three Cheers to the British Flower Farmers 🌻🌸🎉

Many Happy Returns and lots of Birthday wishes to HM Queen Camilla!
I was privileged to meet and share a few words when HM Queen Camilla stood amidst my Spiral Meadow Floral installation at The Garden Museum British Flowers Week 2018 the memories of which will always be treasured when she said she how much she enjoyed standing inside the meadow.
What flavour will the birthday cake be ?
Red velvet? What do you think? 🤔
The GLAMOROUS side of the job!?!
As always we are very grateful to Harkenn Recycling for supporting our small business and collecting the recycling ♻️ Harkenn Ltd Recycling deal with huge multimillion£ fruit, veg and flower companies and we really appreciate them helping an independent business like Evolve to be more sustainable & planet friendly! THANK YOU 🙏
Today in the drizzle we loaded this lot!!
3 bins of film sleeves and pallet wrap
5 bins of cardboard and paper
1 bin of hard plastic-broken crates, plant pots and trays and buckets - these are made from recycled plastic.
We don’t generate oodles of waste as we’ve taken out the majority of incoming packaging - this load took around four months to collect!
95% of the flowers coming into us and 100% going out from Evolve are either wrapped in paper or naked. We use biodegradable labels, paper tape and even have flower food in compostable sachets.
Ribbons are biodegradable too and our arrangements and tributes are plastic free, and compostable.
Save the Earth 🌍 it’s the only planet with Chocolate 🍫

We will remember.
The D-Day operation on June 6, 1944, united the land, air, and sea forces of the Allied armies in what became the largest amphibious invasion in military history. Codenamed Operation OVERLORD, it deployed five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France.

Been a busy week …. Lots of flowers going off to florists and gifts nationwide. Next week is British Flowers Week… what’s your favourite flower?
Another Church to add to the list!
This weeks demonstration as an Area Demonstrator for NAFAS took me to St Paul’s Church in Birkenshaw, near Bradford. A beautiful setting for foam free, British grown celebrating all that “Marvellous May” has brought us!
Everything I use in my demonstrations is British grown and foam free - I show a selection of mechanics including chickenwire, Oshun Pouch, FloraGuppy, string, twigs and armatures. This demo generated 13 raffle prizes 10 of which were taken home arranged in the medium or included the container.
“Helen several of our ladies contacted me today, to say they were bowled over by your demonstration last night!
"One of the best" and "every club should have her" were commented upon”
That was great to hear, especially as I return home at just past midnight! and why I do what I do - trying to inspire and encourage flower clubs to be involved in flowering spaces and create planet friendly designs should not be difficult.
Do your best with what you have, where you are!
If any church flower groups wish to have a workshop it can be arranged! There are other demonstrators and tutors around the country and we are passionate about arranging in planet friendly ways - get in touch and we can link you up 🙂

This is a behind the scenes …. Rest for me is sending my brain in a different direction for a bit - I understand more why this needs to happen now that a pro has told me I’m neurodiverse /adhd or whatever the current label is and it delays burn out for a little while as the brain is completely immersed in something else. Davids Title was Natural Energy and he generously shared lots of inspirational creativity this weekend … good whilst it lasted 😍
back to the office today and miserable tasks akin to eating frogs. If anyone likes eating frogs do get in touch - there’s work to do!
CREATE stage at Harrogate on Sunday … seems a week away already !!

Rain held off 😂 Wellies not required!!
Yoghurt pots, April showers, bits of string and British grown 🙂 oh and Buster came to raise a flag for St George’s Day.
Looking forward to doing a Demonstration slot on Sunday - see you at Harrogate Show :) will be lovely to see all the Floral exhibits
What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to highlight this incredibly detailed construction artfully created by Kate Pilton reusing tubes, fabrics and wooden sticks. One of my favourite inspirational pieces seen at the Lincolnshire countryside show and one to reflect upon.
When you’ve seen hundreds of designs it’s fabulous to see inspirational designs that capture the imagination. The miniature version of this piece was something to behold!!Kate Pilton
Party time at NAFAS Scunthorpe flower club who created this stunning party girl - amazing accessories and won the Public Choice Award! Well done Joanne & Mandy :)

Last week I was told I had been featured as a key player in the British flower sector as forward thinker; driving the future of floristry towards sustainablity. Unbeknown to me I was included in a presentation to a major corporate retailer by another multimillion player in the floral industry 😳This created an interesting thought process and reaction; especially in light of the new information of me being neurodiverse🤪 (anyone who knows me well is not surprised) I was flattered for two seconds…..then I thought that proves what I thought…. I know there’s a lot of stalkers and watchers out there 😂 Then a new florist in the Evolvers group said I’m the GOAT 🐐 of floral sustainability - for a moment I thought … I don’t have any goats eating the compost - heys there’s an idea !?! 💡 That took some Urban dictionary research and caused much hilarity 😂 SO If you want - The latest low down on British grown flowers in the UK floral industry. - A product development ninja in your team with over 2 decades experience in floral sundries products here and abroad. - Floral sustainability expert who’s visited hundreds of farms, factories and fields during a 4 decade career! Oh and studied carbon literacy as well as audit processes. Get in touch - Consultancy rates on request.
Brace yourself! We’ve had a full on flowery day at the Epic centre at the Lincolnshire Showground for #countrysidelincs2024 …. RECENT HIGHLIGHTS...
In 2018 Evolve Flowers Ltd was selected as a finalist in The British Flowers Week Event held at The Garden Museum, Lambeth London. The floral installation; The Spiral Meadow was constructed without any floral foam and used 100% British blooms. It was visited by the Duchess of Cornwall and other VIPs as well as being featured on BBC Breakfast with Helen interviewed by Carol Kirkwood.
2018 also involved another spiral - this time at The Festival of Flowers at Leeds Castle. Helen was invited to design an installation for the spiral staircase around the theme of Ladies Day. This design featured an elegant cast iron bath, sign written with a poem overflowing with a floral waterfall and hiding a rubber duck! (As seen on the header photograph for this page)
