Ralph’s Wifes’ Lane

Young Ralph he was a cockle man
He’d work from dusk till dawn
Setting out each day with his cart
Gathering pecks of cockles and prawns

This job was passed on to him
From his grandpa and his dad
It’s the only thing he’s ever done
Since he were knee-high to a lad

Now well grown-up with wife and kids
She saw him off, each day of the week
With a packed lunch in his knapsack
And a kiss upon the cheek

She’d send him briskly on his way
He’d disappear across the sands
Returning back before the dark
She sent a prayer across the land

A ghastly storm once hit the coast
Pushing sands back to the sea
Instead of turning back Ralph thought…
I’ll brave it’s cruelty

The mist soon fell as darkness
Replaced the fading light
And then he was nowhere to be seen
He’d disappeared into the night

Ralph didn’t come home that dreadful night
Him and his cart were never found
Other cocklers from miles away said
He’s perished and he’d drowned

Still, Ralph’s loyal wife went out each night
To face the Sun or pouring rain
Waiting with her trusty lamp
To guide Ralph back home again

She never missed a night from then
Until she too perished in wind and rain
Now locals say they’ve seen her ghost waiting…
At the end of Ralph’s Wife's Lane
