As we start leaving the Feria season behind, I'll be posting the last few Mantones I have left in the next few weeks.
As you know, before I list them for sale, I inspect them closely, air/wash, detangle and restore tassels, iron, photograph in detail... It's a lengthy process, therefore taking my time between listings is a must!
Those of you that have bought one from me before, know what I'm referring to: what you get is what you previously saw!
Now that my youngest of 3 boys is starting primary school, I will also be starting a new day job in August and surely I'll take longer to list items, but I love doing this so much, bringing authentic Feria outfits and Mantones to the flamenc@s in UK, that I have no intention of stopping! I'll just be quieter on socials, I guess.
So remember to check my eBay and Etsy pages and, if you're looking for something specific you can't find, just get in touch, I might have stock unlisted!

The 'Mantón de Manila' is a representative symbol of Spanish folklore that, as Benito Pérez Galdós said:
"Wrapping yourself in him is like dressing yourself in a painting (... ). Industry will not invent anything that equals the naive, flower-splattered, flexible, sticky, matte poetry with that fringe that has some of the tangles of sleep.”
The Manila Shawl is a square silk canvas decorated in vivid colors with flowers, birds or fantasy, and finished throughout its perimeter by fringes. Of Chinese origin, it became very popular during the 18th century in Spain and Spanish America as a complement to women's clothing. He was immortalized by painters like Joaquín Sorolla, Hermen Anglada Camarasa, Ramón Casas or Julio Romero de Torres.
In the traditional culture of female dress, the Manila shawl is associated with the Andalusian woman, the Madrid manola, casticism in the universal geography of Spanish influence, Flamenco and the elegance of exotic cut.
The Manila shawls take their name from the Philippine capital, where they made the first stop on their journey from China to Spain. They had been produced in Canton (today Guangzhou) and other Chinese locations, and exported through a trade council or Cohong, whose thirteen members were the only ones authorized to trade with foreign barbarians. Although the tradition of Chinese silk embroidery is almost as old as silk itself, and already since the 16th century the famous Galleon of Manila transported to Spain Chinese textiles, all the 'mantones' that have come to our days were produced from the early 19th century, which is probably the time the model was developed. It is said that the fringes, which were already added on the Peninsula, were a legacy of Morish tastes and labors. The higher quality mats were packaged in lacquered boxes, so flashy that some were later converted into tables. Along with the Manila shawls, the ships brought many other oriental goods, such as tea, paintings, fans or porcelain.
