4 years back & the test pressings for the Get Hip compilation LP landed. If anyone is still wanting a copy of the comp there's a few sellers on Discogs with copies.

A day off work today and look what just turned up, the test pressings for the Get Hip! compilation LP. Must admit that I was expecting these in the New Year so it was a nice surprise. Got loads of stuff to do today though so it will be a few hours before I can get a chance to listen to it.

Todays Listening: A record that I never thought I'd would see dropped in the post today - the debut album from Bibelots 'Over The Waterfall'.
Some of you might remember Bibelots songwriter/guitarist Neil Athey from when he was fronting the mod band Tin Soldiers back in the early 90s. Really loving this record and all the faves are here - 'Devils Highway', 'The Revolution Will Be Digitised', 'Manta Ray' and 'First Babylon'. For me it's the best album I've heard this year.

A comp that I've just picked up, this is a reissue that first came out about 10 year ago. Quite a few of these tracks first appeared on The Untouchables 1985 album 'Wild Child' but these are the early recordings and have much more of a Ska sound to them than the Soul sounding songs that were on the bands debut album.
I'm still after The Untouchables comp 'Cool Beginnings 1981-1983' if anyone has one for sale?

Sad to hear of the passing of Squire drummer Kevin Meynell.
I've always liked Squire after first hearing them as a young mod back in the 80s and I have caught the band live a few times over the years and even DJ'd at one of their gigs. Squire's 'Get Smart!' is one of my favourite albums from the mod revival bands and an early line up of my band The Che Men even covered 'Take A Look' from that album for the Squire tribute CD which Twist Records put out in 2006.
RIP

One from1985 - 'Take A Walk!' by The Edge.
I've always liked this song which I first heard when The Edge supported The Truth at The Crypt in Middlesbrough back in '85.
Even with it's 80s production which was produced by Olga from The toy Dolls I still like this single. The band only released one more single ''Little Girl Blue' in 1986 before calling it a day but Gem from The Edge was to go onto bigger things with Heavy Stereo before joining Oasis. It's worth tracking down The Edge's demo tapes as to me the better songs were on those tapes, one reminding me of The Ruts.

With half the copies already gone on pre-sales I'd just like to thank everyone who has already bought a copy. All your support is greatly appreciated.
I'll be out and about today dropping off copies of the record but for anyone still wanting a copy of the record you can order online via Bandamp or Discogs.

Those of you who were at the final Get Hip night and picked up a copy of the free CD might of noticed a hidden track on the disc.

Just in case anyone was wondering what the song is it's 'Day Is Done' by Nick Drake. Not a tune you'll of heard played at Get Hip before but I do love Nick Drake and to me his music is timeless. Nick Drake released 3 great albums - 'Five Leaves Left' (1969), 'Bryter Layter' (1971) and my fave 'Pink Moon' (1972) before he sadly passed away aged just 26 on 25th November 1974.

Had a comp on the hi-fi earlier - 'Stirring Up Some Mod Soul Action' and this track came on. Now, I've loved this song ever since I first heard it many years ago but listening to it now I can hear 'War Crimes' by The Special AKA around 40 seconds into the song. Never noticed it before but it was possibly from reading Vive Le Rock's review of the 40th anniversary issue of 'The Special AKA 'In The Studio' album earlier which made me think of that tune. Maybe Jerry Dammers is a fan of this song too?

Sunday Morning Sounds: and while I catch up on some reading with the latest issue of Vive Le Rock magazine which dropped in yesterdays post I thought I'd dig out the New Town Kings debut album 'Sound Of The New Town' since the mags review of our album namechecks them. Now I can see where Vive Le Rock are coming from with our song 'Wasted Lands' but the song didn't start out as a reggae number. At one band pratice our drummer Laze decided to change the beat to the song and it really clicked into place. We jamed the end out to which John at Mirage put on a great dub style and our frontman Dins added a melodica as I'm a big fan of Augustus Pablo.
The Che Men's 'Echoes Of The 30s' is available to buy from Bandcamp & Discogs. But don't hang around if you want a copy as we have sold nearly half the copies already.
