Guild Hall Cheadle

Guild Hall Cheadle The Guild Hall can be hired for all events needs, ranging from Discos to Meetings and workshops. The Main Hall holds 200 - 300 people, The Oakley Room 100.

The Catholic Guild Hall, Cheadle was originally owned by the miners in Cheadle. There were several open cast mines in the area and the miners had no social club of their own. For every ton of coal taken from the mine in Leek Road, Cheadle, the miners each contributed a shilling to save for a social club and the hall was built around 1928. The mines soon got in to difficulties and were forced to cl

ose, the local catholic priest, John Joseph MacDonald (‘Fr Mac’), bought the hall for the town and has remained the property of the catholic church ever since. Over the years the hall was host to many of the big dance bands, and people would come from all over the country to dance on its famed sprung floor.

The Guild Hall is set to reopen

We are pleased to confirm that our major roof project has now been completed and having been closed for 15 months, the Guild Hall is set to reopen on June 28th.

When the Hall was forced to shut its doors because of the pandemic, the decision was made to push forward with the long-awaited plan to carry out major work on the roof of the building which has been at the centre of the town’s social life for almost a century.

All of the old asbestos cement tiles have now been removed and a modern, fully insulated roof has been installed. At the same time all guttering and drainpipes have been replaced.

The Guild Hall Committee is grateful to grant funders, individuals, groups and businesses that have made a contribution to their roof fund. There is some way to go to meet the ambitious fundraising target and any additional donations would be most welcome. Thanks should also be given to the Staffordshire Moorlands District Council who allocated funds via their Covid Recovery Fund, which have enabled ongoing running costs to be met.

The smaller Oakley Room has remained open to the Cheadle & District Foodbank and since the beginning of May, it has been able to welcome the return of some hirers.

The venue has several wedding receptions planned before the end of the year, subject to ongoing restrictions. and a group of parishioners from St Giles RC Church have worked hard to spruce up the interior décor, the paint being kindly donated by Peter & James Wilks from Homepoint DIY in Cheadle.

Guild Hall update
We were hoping to reopen the Oakley Room this weekend (Nov 7/8) but as we are entering into a second period of lockdown, we have had to change our plan and will review again in December.
In the meantime. while we are closed we are moving forward with the re-roofing of the Main Hall. We have had to take out a substantial loan to make this happen, and we urgently need to raise £20,000.

I retire today, Friday 30 October, as Guild Hall Administrator. It was good to work with so many people connected to this important community place in Cheadle. Phone number (working again!), email and FB Messenger remain the same. Best wishes, Martin

If possible, please use email or Messenger to contact us - we have spent weeks with an unreliable phone service.

Renewing the roof

Starting on the scaffolding has slipped by a week, to 25 October.

14/10/2020

Renewing the roof!

Weather permitting, contractors will start work on Monday to remove the existing roof on the Main Hall. The scaffolding will be fully secured and the walkway from Tape Street to Morrison's will stay open.

First, the low grade asbestos cement tiles will be carefully removed, then a roofing contractor will put on the new roof.

Total cost will be near to £100,000. St Giles Catholic Church, Allchurches Trust, and Sir Harold Hood's Charitable Trust have made grants. A loan of £50,000 has been secured, but this leaves a shortfall of £20,000.

Lots of community groups use the Guild Hall regularly in normal times and it is a favourite venue for parties and events. With the current closure because of Covid and with the bad weather of winter approaching, the Guild Hall Committee has taken the bold decision to get the work done.

Work on the Main Hall should take 6 -7 weeks. The Hall is likely to be closed until Christmas.
