Wherever F went, love laughter and joy followed, so it was no wonder that the chapel was absolutely full to capacity. There were lots of tears during the ceremony but so much laughter too, remembering F’s capacity for joy. Her daughter did a reading and was incredible too. When I got home I had the most wonderful message simply saying…’we couldn’t have chosen anyone better for mum’s funeral, Debs, you went above and beyond to make sure it was perfect. You made the service, funny, personal and engaging and absolutely summed mum up to a tee. Mum would have loved it too’!! Thanks Debs. The S family.

He was clearly very much admired and respected. One of his friends read an ‘Ode’ she’d written for him years ago but it was absolutely fantastic and summed B up perfectly.

Whilst they didn’t have children, they do have a large loving family who all turned up dressed in bright colours to celebrate R’s wonderful personality. It was such a joy to see it. There were plenty of tears but so much laughter too as R was such a gregarious character. When T got up to remember R, there was not a dry eye in the chapel. He spoke to eloquently about how R had been the love of his life for his whole life. There was no doubt how much R was loved and valued, by not only T but by her entire family. What a wonderful send off it was.

Her presence is very much missed. F’s two granddaughters did readings for the funeral as part of the service, and they were both….quite simply… wonderful. So young and yet so eloquent. I’m not sure I’ve ever heard someone who was just 8 years old speak so fluently and beautifully about how much they’ll miss their grandma. It was amazing. When I returned home, I had a wonderful message from the family saying how personal the service was. There was a fair bit of humour included, as F was a rather comical character, and they’d loved that about my service. What a wonderful message to receive.

‘Just to say thank you Debs again for the wonderful service you conducted for C’s funeral. It was everything that we could have hoped for and more. The service was so personal and you definitely captured the essence of the wonderful man C was.’

I’ve just received this lovely thank you message from C’s family. I officiated at his funeral a couple of weeks ago. It was clear from meeting the family how loved and valued he was. He was such a wonderful gentleman who will be greatly missed. His daughter read the most incredible poem she’d written for him which was simply called ‘dad you’re my hero’ – it was just amazing to hear that in the chapel.

I’ve just met one of my lovely wedding couples again, A&C who are getting married at the rather fabulous Gopsall Hall Farm. We met at the venue so I could get a feel for the vibe they’re looking for. They’re such an unassuming couple who’ve been together for nearly a decade and they know exactly what they want which is great. The day will be a festival vibe, and I have to say that Gopsall Hall Farm is just spot on for that. It’s nestled in the Leicestershire countryside and it is… to be blunt… spectacular as a venue. A&C have hired the entire venue which includes teepees, glamping pods, other fields for camper vans and tents – the whole venue will be their amazing wedding festival. It’s rustic in style and has so much potential and character. It’s going to be amazing, I can’t wait to start working on their script for the big day itself.

I’ve just been lucky enough to carry out a vow renewal for a wonderful couple S&D. Married for 20 years, and they’ve been through some challenging times of late. They wanted to stand up in front of their loved ones and tell them and the world that they ‘still do’!. My goodness…… they did just that and more. There was not a dry eye in the house (or garden should I say) when they both read their vows, which were simply incredible and so personal. Their children did a reading which was wonderful and very emotional. Everyone at the ceremony was also included in my Tree of Love & Life unity ritual and they all became incredibly loud during that – which was just fabulous. S&D – here’s to another happy 20 years – let me know if you want another renewal in another 20 years! I’m up for it!!

I’ve recently conducted a funeral for a wonderful gentleman, D. His family was small, but the chapel was almost full on the day itself which I don’t think his wife and son expected. They knew he was loved, they loved him with all their hearts of course, but I don’t think they quite understood how other people felt about him too. It was a funeral full of warmth, love and memories. His son had written a wonderful tribute to D, very heartfelt and included a poem at the end about their joint love of fishing. It was comical and warm and was a perfect tribute to his lovely dad. The family didn’t want hymns or prayers as D wasn’t religious, but another family friend did a reading too that just summed up D’s unique character and presence. The family loved the service and sent me a wonderful message afterwards. It was a pleasure to work with them and do justice to their loved one.

Being a celebrant at a wedding is quite a task-writing love stories, vows, ring exchanges, poetry, unity rituals and anything else the happy couple want me to build in for them. It takes a while to craft things and make them just right. The couple, of course, have full veto on every single sentence or line that I write – if they don’t think it’s right, we change or remove it – it simply must be perfect for them. It’s vital I understand just how unique they are as a couple – that enables me to write a beautiful, warm and funny script for them. It’s a joyous process though end to end, from the very first contact or phone call, through to the first meet, then pulling elements together so the couple can be sure I am creating something especially for them. Then there’s the big day itself, watching the couple and their loved ones light up during the ceremony is amazing. If I’ve done my job well, there is pure magic in the air! Nana F was the figurehead of the entire family and was surrounded by 4 generations of love, warmth and respect. She had lived a wonderful long life. I’d known this amazing woman for years and most of her incredible family too. The chapel was full and then some. It was so emotional to see the family pallbearers which included my friend’s son and daughter. Most of the family placed flowers on the coffin at the start of the ceremony to show their love and respect. The service had humour and love running right through it and I created a tree of love and life which got everyone on their feet at the very end of the service. The family loved what I’d done on the day, and said that at the wake they’d had so many comments saying what a wonderful and unique service it was. Nana F is a legend to her family and will continue to be for years to come. Goodnight Nana F.

I’ve just spent a few hours with a new vow renewal couple C & C. What a fabulous couple. It’s clear to see the love and respect they have for each other. Such a joyful couple – so grateful for what they have together. They want a ‘family festival’ type of vibe which is right up my street. Their children will be involved as part of the ceremony which is always lovely, and they really like my Tree of Love & Life idea too. It’s going to be an incredible day. It’s official – I’m excited!

It was my absolute pleasure and joy to conduct P&P’s wedding on Saturday at the fabulous Fox Inn at Stourton. Nestled in the Staffordshire countryside, this amazing venue was host to P&P’s wonderfully intimate wedding. The weather was slightly challenging, storms were in the sky, and it was sooo hot and steamy, but none of that mattered because there was so much love in the air. Pure, magical love! P&P’s close-knit family and friends were just so happy to be with this incredible couple on their special day. Guest of honour was P&P’s chow, Zack who was the ring bearer. The atmosphere was relaxed and chilled, everyone laughing and emotional at the same time. The bride and groom looked amazing too. I had so many wonderful comments after the ceremony was completed, particularly how personal and warm it had felt. I’m told I’d captured the essence of P&P. it’s always lovely when you hear that isn’t it. Vicky and the team at the Fox were so organised and really lovely to work with. It …was…a …. Pleasure! I knew the funeral would be quite big, BUT I had no idea how big until the day itself. The chapel was full, with at least 50 others outside. The outside speakers were on – it was quite a scary moment as it was the largest funeral I had conducted. I left as usual having spoken to the family and friends and ensuring they were happy with what I’d done and that we’d done justice to their loved one. I always get a thank you message from families afterwards too or an email, but I couldn’t believe it when the widow called me the next day with these comments. She said…. ‘ Deb, not in our wildest dreams did we ever expect a service like that. All our family and friends said they had never encountered a funeral that was so personal and warm. They felt like they were all involved and swept up with the emotion and joy in remembering D. You surpassed our expectations and then some. I cannot tell you how grateful we all are for giving D such a wonderful send off.’ That call absolutely ‘made’ my day for me.

I can’t quite believe it’s only a few days until P&P’s wedding. The process feels like it’s so long sometimes when planning a wedding, but then it comes around surprisingly quickly in the end. My script is ready and approved – we’ve changed a few bits to make it just right. I’m now running it through every day where possible to ensure I know it as much as I can. There’s such a lot to read, I’d be a bit bonkers not to be fully prepared! The wedding of course includes P&P’s love story and their vows and ring exchanges, but it also includes a bespoke poem I’ve written for them and my unique Tree of Love & Life that I’ve woven into the day’s events too. I can’t wait to see both P&P on the big day itself – they’ve been an absolute joy to work with – great fun and a very warm couple. Here’s to a spectacular day!

First mix equal parts of two hearts full of love. Add two spoonfuls of kindness mixed in with a pinch of joy. Pour in a large cup of friendship and a good splash of respect. Fold in a generous glug of laughter with two drops of loyalty. Finally add in a sprinkle of tenderness and the zest of patience. Mix slowly at first for it all to come together as one. I recently discovered this little gem of a poem called The Dash by Linda Ellis through a friend of my mum. It’s wonderful isn’t it and it makes you think…. the dash in between our date of birth and passing is actually, the life that we live. Yet despite that, it’s signified by a tiny little dash – that’s all. It’s so important to me when meeting families who have lost their loved ones to make the most of that time with them. I never leave until both the family, and I are satisfied we’ve got as much information to bring their loved one to life on the day of the funeral. It’s my job to do justice to that person. I’d hate any family to think their loved one’s service wasn’t personal and warm. This is my wonderful Flo-Rida – rescue Staffie & English bull terrier cross. I’ve had her in my life for almost 10 years, but I’m heartbroken to say I lost her a few weeks ago. She was so incredibly special, I thought I’d share a little about her with you and a poem from Donna Ashworth that I love. It’s called the Rainbow Bridge. When I rescued Flo from the RSPCA, no one had asked to see her. She was the longest serving resident on the day I visited. She was the same when we spent time with her at first. She wasn’t really interested in people. So, I returned, 4 more times, with family and friends to work out if Flo and I could create a bond. It was only on my last visit, and I was just about to give up when it started to rain. Flo went wandering off. I was about to take her back to her kennel, and I called her, and she looked at me, walked across, jumped up and put her paws onto my knees, looked me squarely in the face, and she had a look that simply said, ‘I know you don’t I’? It was only then, that I thought maybe we could make this work. The rest, as they say, is history! She was mine, and although she was fraught with anxieties and ‘weird and wonderful strangeness’, she was fabulous in so many ways. She also was my sounding board for my scripts and used to look at me in a bemused fashion when I ran through things before a ceremony! She had a look that said ‘Mum – you’ve read that already!!’ I can’t begin to explain how much I miss her at home – she was always at my side or under my desk at work – all day, every day. The house feels very empty and cold. I know that will ease in time but for now I’m so happy I had her in my world for those years and I’m a better person for having Flo. I love the beauty of language. I find writing bespoke poems for some of my funerals is both natural and therapeutic for me.
