"I thought I was famous until I walked down a Scottish street with Billy Connolly"

Steve Martin turns 78 today.

Speaking to The Herald in March 2020 ahead of his performance at Glasgow's OVO Hydro alongside long-time collaborator Martin Short, the legendary comedian said: "I first came to Edinburgh when I was 21. There was a big rugby match on and I remember thinking – boy, these people can sure party!

"I came back four years later to appear at the Fringe. I can remember playing my banjo in the coffee shops. Happy times. I have Scottish blood, Irish blood, English blood – which is pretty good for a person who has no blood.

"I have played banjo with Billy Connolly and it was wonderful. Listen, I thought I was famous until I walked down a Scottish street with Billy Connolly. It took on a holy aspect.

"It was like going for a stroll with an apostle."

Last Saturday we had a wonderful evening celebrating the Bard’s birthday.
There was whisky, poetry, bagpipes, delicious food and great music.

Burns suppers don’t happen just once a year at Candacraig and we are lucky to be surrounded by such talented performers who help us entertain our guests and champion Scottish traditions.

We often host corporate retreats at Candacraig. It is the perfect place for brainstorming, team building, strategic thinking in a relaxed atmosphere, whilst surrounded by endless opportunities to get outdoors, have fun and recharge.

We are hosting a Burns Weekend from 27 to 29 January 2023. This is a unique opportunity to experience Candacraig for a weekend in a double room, join in with all the activities planned and celebrate the National Bard in proper style!

The weekend will start with a cocktail making masterclass on Friday 27 January, followed by an informal supper and a whisky tasting with Gordon Muir, to make new acquaintances or refresh old ones! On Saturday morning, after a proper Scottish breakfast, we will take you on a gentle hike along the famous River Don to the Steading Bar in Strathdon. After lunch, we have planned a Land Rover Safari on Candacraig Estate, or you can relax at the house if you prefer!

The black-tie evening will feature a traditional Burns supper prepared by Chef Mark Heirs, drams from Tomintoul Single Malt Whisky distillery to toast the haggis, and a ceilidh with local folk music superstars, Pete MacCallum and Jonny Hardie.
