Tulipa Sylvestris // Wild Tulip

Native across Europe, Asia & North Africa, Sylvestris is one of the 100+ wild tulip varieties that live on meadow, mountain & woodland across the world.

These short but sunshine filled friends were naturalized in the UK in the 17th century meaning that though rare, they can be spotted growing in the wild mainly in mid & east England, the Sylvestris hunt officially begins 🔍🕵️‍♂️👁

I grew these last year but only recently learnt of their background & reliable perennial-ness.
Unfortunately I didn’t leave them in the ground though my findings now have me writing a bulb shopping list whilst this seasons’ are still only small shoots just about breaching their earth🌱

Spring has decended on in time for to wed there tomorrow, and it’s going to be really really nice🌱
Pottered around dressing the chapel whilst a whole hoard of film crew did their thing in the main house👀

Chuffed that the bouquet is 99% British grown (with my very own La Belle Époque tulips sneaking in too, ooo what a lovely feeling- I can see why you farmer florists do it 😉)

Excited to up the local to imported ratio even more this wedding season, every year I use more and more British flowers and fall harder in love with what the brilliant growers on our little island has to offer.

Dying with coreopsis & madder root pigment for a special installation at last month, theres lots to share about Ursula & Emile’s wedding day steeped in celebration of their French & Danish Heritage.

This was the first wedding where the brief was born from the couples floriography reading that delved deeper into the meaning, concept & lore behind their wedding florals.

The link is in the bio to fill out a floriography reading ahead of your consultation or just to learn more about the service💫

I’ve swapped posting for pondering lately, trying to look past the fact I’ve hit the grid all but twice in the past 3+ months, so here’s me lugging a bucket of leftovers in the misty Preseli foothills.
Really I’m here to do a big ramble under an unrelated pretty picture that hopefully grabs your attention..

With another wedding season over, Thistle by Nature turns 4 years old next month.
In this time theres been a 150 mile relocation, countless workspaces, an online shop, a bricks & mortar shop, weddings big & small, market stalls, festival stalls, workshops, photoshoots, collaborations, installations and a whole load of warm feelings for everyone who’s trusted little old me with creating for them.

In other terms, I’ve pretty relentlessly thrown myself at this flower business thing for the last four cycles of the seasons and now I’m pausing to figure out what sticks, how it sticks and why it sticks.
There’s been a gradual rumble of change to how I work for a good while now with themes, ideas & ideals cultivating naturally through thought, research, opportunity & action.

For the winter, I’m nestling down and taking a semi pause from TBN (with some exceptions) to really figure out how I intend on continuing (and I DO intend on continuing, flowers haven’t seen the last of me yet)

Books are still open for 2023/24 weddings but I will be taking on less going forward & clients that feel as though both themselves & their nuptials resonate with the ideals & themes of Thistle by Nature.

Another couple of bits of news are that I’ve now taken on the role of floristry tutor at which is such a welcome adventure & side step into something new.

And in true serendipitous style, I have been gifted a small plot to start growing on🌼*queue ordering a million tulip bulbs*
Excited to feed something I’ve absently poked at but has always found itself falling down the priority list, freeing up time to both teach & learn.

Bless your papery petals if you read down this far, I’ve really gone on haven’t I.
And if you were wondering- no, I don’t ever take the fluffy vest off.

A greeny half arch filled with continus & cow parsley for Lauren & Alex a few weekends back, getting very archy this bank holiday with lots more cow parsley but as May becomes June it’s half froth half seed and somehow even more beautiful

Shout out to for being the best freelancer a florist could ask for on this day last month.

Hi hello💫
Taking full advantage of these cute pics snapped by on a shoot back in February, when the snowdrops were plentiful & the air still carried a slight winters chill.

I am the anthophile (shouts to for bringing this word to my attention, not quite sure how I didn’t know it existed before hand) behind Thistle by Nature🤗
And here is what seems to be my annual post to introduce myself.

This year is my 7th year a florist meaning TBN turns 4 in November (baffling)
and my ever evolving love for this craft/art/job/industry grows stronger with every arrangement, connection & idea.
I cannot really visualize or even fathom a life without working with flowers at this point, I know a lot of other florists feel this pull & commitment towards the flower life too.

As this journey unfolds I find parts of my practice slowly shifting into a new realm(?) not quite sure what that means yet but I’m here to find out.
But I do know that having my arms filled with stems ain’t going anywhere fast.

Self confessed romantic Pisces is here to fall in love with your floral plans whatever the reason and work to produce interesting, design led compositions that speak a story in earth offerings, in honour of the season they are held by.

Basically I’m obsessed with all of nature’s botanical treasures and love finding unique & interesting ways to curate them, also love a fluffy vest & anything in terracotta.

PS. HAPPY EARTH DAY

Cowslips or Primula Veris meaning ‘first flower of Spring’ were traditionally picked to ordain weddings, their common name nods to how they are often found littering meadows grazed by cattle.

Buttercups, a part of the Ranunculaceae family are a spring flower especially steeped in folklore; most commonly used to decipher the like or dislike of butter by being placed under a chin.
Another folk tradition goes that farmers would rub their cows udders with the flower on May Day morning to increase the richness & yield of their milk. This act would also help protect the cows from being stolen by the faerie folk.

The may pole has been danced in Britain, Europe & further afield for centuries.
A pole made from of a Birch trunk is dressed with flowers & ribbons as a of the coming together of the masculine & feminine symbolizing fertility & abundance.

Hawthorn blossom, or May blossom exhibits it’s fluffy white clouds in the month of May.

Tradition goes that on may eve, to gather it’s bounty along with branches of green, ordaining entrances to homes with garlands as well as to decorate a may pole in celebration of the fertile spring & it’s abundance.
This act of gathering foliage & blossom on may eve is known as ‘bringing in the may’.

May Day itself being the only day of the year it was seen as safe to bring hawthorn into the home, ill fated superstitions of bad luck surround the tree if brought indoors or even picked at any other time.
