Before and after the frost.

The season is over now - the frost turned the dahlia flowers brown and their foliage black.
I’ll cut them down this week and then dig them next week to dry and store over winter ready for next year.

I didn’t manage to get them all cut on Thursday before the frost hit as I was away with family. But luckily I did manage to snap this beautiful American Dawn after some rain before the frost stole her beauty.

It’s been a bit of an odd year for the flowers.

It’s been incredibly wet, and now it’s turned incredibly cold. There’s a big frost forecast for tonight, so this may be the end of the season for me.

But fingers crossed it won’t be!

I’ve cut a big bucket full for tomorrow’s order - just in case.

I’ll be doing flowers up until Sunday 25th August, then closed until the second weekend of September for my wedding and hopefully some sort of honeymoon!

I’ll let you in on a secret.

This point, when I take the flowers out of their buckets and lay them out before I arrange them, is always a bit overwhelming.

Until I get those first few stems in my hand, and see how they are going to come together, I have no idea what I’m doing or where it’s going.

But luckily something always turns up!

Now the bees have actually arrived, they are all over this plant. It seeds like crazy, even the excess plants I pulled out the salad bed are flowering in the compost heap having survived the winter.
So I don’t need the millions of seeds I saved last year.

Tomorrow is a big sowing today, in preparation for a summer of flowers! 45 labels written, filled cell trays at the ready and this little toy to keep them happy. Ok it keeps me happy. Simple things for simple minds.
