Weston Town Council secures operator for permanent market
Weston-super-Mare Town Council is pleased to announce the selection of ‘By Invitation Events’, a respected event and market curation company, as the official market provider for the town.
Since being founded by Michelle Beck in 2013, ‘By Invitation Events’ has become one of the South West's premier curators of artisan markets, including the independent markets in Bridgwater and Taunton, as well as markets for the Bournemouth and Torbay Air Shows. Known for its dedication to community working alongside and with local businesses, ‘By Invitation Events’ has transformed each location into a bustling centre for local producers, artists, and entrepreneurs, giving them a platform to showcase handmade goods, fresh produce, and unique services.
Michelle Beck’s dedication and expertise has revitalised town centres by attracting shoppers, tourists, and locals alike through live music, seasonal events, and a commitment to sustainability. The company’s eco-conscious focus, from reducing plastic use to promoting locally sourced products, has resonated deeply with today's ethical consumers, helping the markets to establish as destinations for those seeking authentic and sustainable shopping experiences.
‘By Invitation Events’ brings a dedicated team to support the smooth operation of each market. Key members include Bridie and Jack Beck, who regularly steward events; Deputy Market Manager Jenny Keogh; a traffic managing team led by Rachel Morgan; and Livvi and Sharon from Daffodil PR and Marketing, who lead social media efforts. Marketing materials are designed by Joanne Broadhurst of Ablaze Design, ensuring every detail reflects the market operator’s vision.
Michelle Beck, who grew up in Somerset, has a background in hospitality and event management that spans three decades. She founded ‘By Invitation Events’ after a tenure in hospitality sales and marketing, driven by a lifelong passion for event organisation. Her love for Weston-super-Mare began in childhood with fond memories of donkey rides on the beach and visits to the iconic Grand Pier. Michelle is excited to establish a regular market in Weston, offering local independent businesses an opportunity to thrive while bringing fresh experiences to the area for residents and tourists alike.
“Weston-super-Mare holds a special place in my heart, and I am thrilled to create a weekly gathering space for local artisans and producers here,” says Michelle Beck. “I look forward to working with local businesses to create a market that not only benefits the economy but also strengthens community ties and provides a destination that both locals and visitors will enjoy.”
The Market is planned to go in the Town Square and Italian Gardens which are managed by North Somerset Council. Weston-super-Mare Town Council has been working closely with North Somerset Council to develop a regular market in the town.
Mark Canniford, North Somerset Council’s executive member responsible for High Street and town centre renewal, said: “We know that there’s appetite for a permanent regular market in Weston, so I’m delighted to see this come to fruition. The market was one of the top three priorities from the Weston Placemaking Strategy consultation with residents and businesses. It will showcase the many high quality and award-winning products that are made here in North Somerset - from artisan business selling locally to those who export worldwide.
“Shopping locally makes a huge difference to local businesses and the town’s economy, and a weekly market provides people with a regular opportunity to support businesses local to them. I hope people will get to know their producers and hear about the hard work, love and passion that goes into creating these fantastic food, drink and creative products right on our doorstep.”
Residents and visitors can anticipate a vibrant community market that contributes to the town’s placemaking, cultural and economic development, all while supporting sustainable practices and local collaboration.
