UPDATE: Feb 16th 2024 - Torquay Pavilion
As of this week, Guy Henderson has reported in Devonlive that Torbay Council has voted, as they indicated they would, to go ahead with taking back full control of The Pavilion from the current leaseholders, MDL.

Guy also reports that restoration COULD begin by the end of the summer, but councillors were told, 'more investment would be needed'.
Some background information:
Empty since 2013 and in desperate, desperate need of a long-promised, never materialised protective scaffold roof to stem the incessant flow of rain water pouring into the fragile iron-frame and ornate plaster building...
..the taking back of the building from an impossible situation where no further maintenance was planned at all, is a huge step in the right direction.

However, the scaffold to stop the rain getting in needs to go up NOW.
Every day of neglect, in one of the wettest winters on record, is compounding an already dire situation for the building.

Pictures of the inside of the building and its current state have not been forthcoming for some considerable time.
However an impeccable source has told Undiscovered Torbay that in places, the supporting iron structure is turning to rusty dust.

This should come as no surprise to anyone who understands the structure and materials used in the building and who understands that when you take 100 year old iron girders and add water, you have the perfect recipe for making iron shavings!

A few steps away from becoming homeless – a risk not to be underestimated

David Gledhill

7th Feb 2034.
Did you know that you are potentially only a few steps away from being homeless and on the streets?

It seems hard to believe, but it is something that becomes a reality for so many people every year; most of them never see it coming.

Gary Mitchell, who chairs the Paignton-based charity New Footings Ministries, which runs a homeless hostel for eleven weeks every year, has seen it all.

“There are three stages to homelessness,” he said when I interviewed him recently for the Good Morning South Devon Volunteer Show, which goes out every Tuesday from 10 am to 1pm on Riviera FM.

“The first is losing your job, the second is losing your home because you’ve got a mortgage to pay or can’t afford the rent, the next step is being out on the street.

“There is no catch-all for this and there’s a really wide range of reasons as to why people end up homeless,” he added.

So far this year, the hostel has been overnight home to 89 different individuals, which interestingly is way higher than the official estimated homelessness figure for Torbay, and that will likely rise as we move into another cold spell.

Reasons for being homeless are many and complex and some in society have a cruelly negative view of those that find themselves on the street, often through no fault of their own.

No matter what your views, people do not choose to become addicted to gambling, drugs or alcohol, nor do they seek out abusive relationships or choose to fall out irrevocably with family and friends.

People who have served in the armed forces did not predict when they signed up that what they would witness would leave them with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which prevents them from living a ‘normal’ life – holding down a job and maintaining a home.

Gary and his incredible group of volunteers have come across individuals suffering all of the above as they endeavour to give those who want it a break and a chance to step back into the mainstream.

New Footings Ministries’ volunteers provide a wide range of essential tasks from cooking and washing up to doing the laundry, helping with paperwork or simply sitting and having a chat and as with most charities in the Bay, they need more of them. Homelessness can strike at any stage of life and the YMCA South Devon is on hand to support younger people who are in danger of being on the streets or in unsuitable accommodation through their Nightstop project.

Nightstop provides safe and secure accommodation for young people aged 16 – 25 who are at risk of being homeless. Young people stay with volunteer hosts, who will give them their own room, evening meal and breakfast, washing facilities, clothes wash and dry, and someone to talk to or simply a quiet place to have some headspace.

Once again this year, brave souls from across Torbay are being challenged to endure freezing Winter temperatures to sleep under the stars to raise money for young homeless people.

It is hoped that dozens of people will bed down on outdoor tennis courts for the night to raise funds. Called the Sleep Easy, YMCA’s across the country are challenging their local residents to sleep anywhere but their own beds for one night only on Friday, March 22nd, but most of the efforts locally are being concentrated on a sleep out in Goodrington.

Since it launched in December 2021, Nightstop South Devon has provided hundreds of safe nights and as a result, dozens of young people are now in supported living or are in a better position with housing. Otherwise, they would have been either homeless or sofa surfing.

If you can face a night in the open then you can register via the website at www.ymcasouthdevon.org.uk/sleep-easy.html. Each year, the sleep-out raises thousands of pounds for this sadly much-needed service.

It isn’t easy, I did it back in 2022 and it was an uncomfortable, cold and miserable night, but for me, it was just one night, others face the same or worse every night of the year.

Get in touch with me, [email protected]. I look forward to hearing from you.

This is good advise for those, male or female to have a check. I had a check about four years ago and I ammediatly found myself in St George's Hospital, London. They saved my life but my brother Peter was not so lucky he died on the operating table 3 years earlier.

Positive steps are underway to bring Torbay Pavilion back under the control of Torbay Council, which plans to start improvement work.

The council has agreed on an initial deal with the leaseholder of the pavilion to bring the Grade II Listed building back under its full control.

This will allow it to develop its funding strategy and long-term restoration plan that will once again see Torquay’s most significant landmark reopen to the public.

Update Sunday 28th January 2024.
Some news about the Pavilion project.
I have contacted the councillors which are involved with the progress of the Pavillion rebuild.

They have invited all persons or company's that are interested to submit their proposal and details by the end of February.
There shall be a time period for consultation and possible viewing of the premises at a suitable date.

The councils main concern is that the income is adequate for the up keep of the building.
As you know Carousel Community Projects is a non profit concern for metal health issues in Torquay. So I will be pushing and explaining for an area commited for our Community benefits, such as Carousel Community Projects. Any ideas or question just call me on 07707 793882.

CCP update.
Hope everyone had a great Christmas and an exciting New Year. My apologies for taking so long to update. You might of heard that the local council announced the finances for rebuilding the Pavilion is in place and possibly take a year to complete.
However, they still have not communicated which activities for the community, if any shall be organised.
I will investigate the situation and update you as soon as possible.

Recently CCP has joined the Men in Sheds as a member and seeking information from them to organise and include a second Men in Sheds for Torquay.
If anyone is interested to purchase some vinyl 45rpm records in mint condition a new patch has just arrived. Some great rock, pop, disco, rock and soul. This will contribute to the funds needed for our projects. Just contact me on 07707 793882 for further info. We are still looking for volunteers to help for when we start the sale of items at the market in Torquay town. Call if you time at the same number above.

Best regards to all,
Bobby Gallocker.

Update.
The summer period shall soon come to an end, not that this summer was that good. Which prompted me to take a quick vacation to Gibraltar.
The fundraising event at Babbacombe Downs was a disappointment. We only sold five balloon tickets. The ticket return time ended on the 30th August and there have been no tickets returned. Which means we don't have a winner. Let's hope we have more success on the next annual event in 2024.

Update.
I would like to give many thanks to the Torquay Rotory who organised the volunteer marshals for the event on Sunday 16th July.
Additionally, a thank you to the Torbay council event team for sorting out the electricity problem. Due to the wind and the possibility of rain some of the stalls did not turn up.
This also meant that the public were few and the stalls, including the Carousel Community Projects stall did not fundraise much or sell very much products. The weather shall always dictate the success of an event.
Big thanks to Lionel Digby for paying us a visit.
Let's hope the next event will turn out better.
Regard to all,
Bobby Gallocker

At the event on Sunday, something for the toddlers. Mum or Dad can help to look and find one of the hidden butterflies. When you find one just bring it the stage area and collect your bag of goodies. Can anyone explain the reason why there isn't hardly any butterflies flying around anymore?

WHEN THE COMMUNITY COMES TOGETHER.
Just checked the weather for Sunday 16th July. The big event day, some showers but that forecast could change by next week. This picture is the Babbacombe Downs, the Carousel Community Projects Torquay event takes place here fundraising for mental health. Come and enjoy the gathering for some hog Roast (sorry vegans), glitter & glam face painting, the balloon race with a difference, goal shots for all ages, find the butterflies for a prize, quality 45 rpm vinyl records (some hard to find ones), blues soul and rock/pop CDs, art & craft, guess the six digit number to open a safe to collect a big bag of money, The very talented Torbay Yarn Bombing and Community service stalls. Not forgetting a great play list of rock blues and contemporary music from Rascals Entertainment/DJ Bobby G.

Sunday 16th July Babbacombe Downs
The Great Torquay Balloon Race by post.
Fundraising event for mental health.
I have noticed that the electrical box which had an argument with a vehicle is now being fixed.
All the marshal volunteers are in place and the DSA (Disable Sailing Association) shall show their two incredible Yachts in the Babbacombe Downs Bay. These Yachts are only used for the disabled and persons with metal health issues.
Another donation came in today, the sum of £50, which brings the total in the fundraising account at Lloyds bank to a total of £550.

Update 28.06.23
Putting a face to the public - CCP organiser.
Hello to our followers and those good folks who shall partisapate/volunteer at the fundraising event on the 16th July at Babbacombe Downs and many thanks to those who have donated to CCP.
The amount raised over the last few months has been deposited into the special fundraising account at Lloyds bank in Torbay has now reached £500. Some might call this "small beginnings" however we do hope this will increase when CCP applys for funds from various organisations over the next 12 months. CCP will now enquire through the NHS and other mental health professionals in regard to their services. If you have thoughts about volunteering please do contact us. There are various opportunities within the programmes of projects and activities or you may have your own ideas and creativities to offer.
Regards to all and good mental health.
Bobby Gallocker.

Update. 27.06.23
Fundraising event 16th July,
Babbacombe Downs.
For those of you in the Torbay area, you may have read the article "The Great Torquay Balloon Race" in the Beach Hut magazine.
This article was sent in some weeks ago and lists the activities at the event mentioned above. Some of the activities have been canceled due to non public liability coverage or other reasons. So the bouncy castle and jewelry stall have been canceled.
The balloon race, as mentioned before is now by post, details are on the card which is purchased at the event. The Hog Roast is still available with roast potatoes.
Our promo events and raffles at the Queen Elisabeth Cafe and the Dolphin pub raised £153 + £150 donations. Total amount is
£303. I have phoned all the winners who could not attend, the phone number to arrange your prize to be collected or delivered is 07707 793882. I hope everyone is enjoying the sunny days we are having and look forward to your support on the 16th July.
