Another successful Marathon Meeting, reviewing over 700 abstracts with the Programme Committee for the WMS2024 Congress completed.

That’s the end of another successful site visit to Prague. It’s always so valuable to meet in person with the local organisers and suppliers. You just can’t build those solid relationships virtually. When you’re all onsite you have to have that connection so you can all pull together to deliver a successful event.

This International Women’s Day, we’re proud to showcase the predominantly female Azura team. Our brilliant people are usually too busy making the Azura Events magic happen to take their moment in the sun, so we wanted to take today to celebrate them. Here are some brief introductions, but if you want to get to know them better, you can read our blog post: https://azuraevents.co.uk/category/blog/

First up, we have Azura Events Managing Director and all-round association events powerhouse, Clare Beach. Clare IS and has built the team harnessing the power of diversity to gain the greatest mix of skills and experience to make sure Azura events are always exceptional.

Next up is Semone Kotze. Semone is our Registration Manager. She is an extraordinary problem solver and often the person dealing with delegate challenges. Based in South Africa, her dream travel destinations are all places with cooler weather.

Our third introduction is Michael Lockett, our Platform Manager. We haven’t yet found a tech challenge too big for Michael and he’s a proud and supportive ally to our strong female team.

Next up is our Exhibitions Manager, Rachel Lockett, who happens to be married to Michael, but who is an outstanding member of the team in her own right. If she gets her way, our next event will be in Italy.

Patrizia Heidl Male, our Abstracts Manager has travelled so extensively, we had to ask her where she’s been that she loves best rather than where she still wants to go. Pat always has an eye on the big picture and her experience means she takes everything in her stride.

Marie-Claire Morley, or MC as she’s more commonly known is one of the newer additions to the team. She’s our Support Manager, which basically means she does a bit of everything and has one of the biggest jobs in the team.

Sue Munro is our new Speaker Manager, and she is off to a flying start. We don’t know how she does it, but she also finds time to volunteer with a Riding for the Disabled group and would have THE BIGGEST dream dinner party table.

Michelle Naidoo-Smith is our Sponsorship Manager and would forgo a dream dinner party to spend an afternoon baking with Taylor Swift and listening to secret vault songs. Hopefully she’d invite the rest of the team too.

Catherine Ross is our Marketing and Communications Manager. She wants to put solar panels everywhere and loves being surrounded by brilliant women.

Corinne Turner is our Finance Manager and wishes she had invented Cat’s Eyes. Though we’re glad she didn’t as we love having her as part of our team.

And finally, Christophe Jerome Viller works with Michael as our second Platform Manager. He would love to travel to Rome to see the Coliseum, but his dream dinner party guests are a lot closer to home – he’d invite Michael.

I’m in Prague, Czechia 🇨🇿 this week for a site visit. One of my unofficial objectives is to find amazing places for our delegates to eat within a ten a minute walk of the Congress Centre that we can suggest. I arrived this evening after a day of travelling, found this place a short walk away and was not disappointed. Can you recommend anywhere else? 😍

Reflecting on the incredible success of our recent congress!

A massive shoutout to my phenomenal onsite and virtual team who poured their hearts and souls into making it an absolute triumph! Their dedication, hard work, passion and synergy were nothing short of spectacular. 🌠

The amazing feedback we've received from delegates, committees and suppliers about how seamlessly the team worked together is a testament to their exceptional collaborative spirit!

Did you know you have until midnight on 19 April to submit your abstract for ?

You need to submit an abstract to apply for one of our fellowships to help with the cost of attending the Congress.

This year, we're awarding up to 100 fellowships worth up to £2,000 each to make attending the Congress more accessible. Fellowships are available in four categories:

- First time WMS Congress Attendee (will be verified).
- Early Career Researcher/Clinician: Applicants should be in an early career phase, training or not yet in a definite established position. The maximum age for applicants is 40 years old (at the time of submission), indicated during abstract submission.
- Travel fellowship for WMS members: WMS members interested in attending the annual Congress but find the registration fee and associated costs a barrier to in-person attendance.
- Senior fellowships for senior myologists who have been active in WMS in the past but are now retired and have constraints on their available funds.

This week, whilst in London for a WMS Executive Board Meeting, I’ve been reflecting and celebrating 10 years since I first started working with Francesco Muntoni and Ros Quinlivan
on the World Muscle Society 2015 Congress with a few trips down memory lane. The rest appears to be history as we’re here working hard on updating the Mission and Values for the Society and planning the up to 2026 Congresses and beyond. So to say I’m feeling thankful, excited and optimistic for the future is an understatement 🙏

After a fun afternoon exploring Halifax in smaller groups by boat, bike and foot, our delegates all came together for a reception at the Canadian Museum of Immigration.

Leading over 100 delegates from the convention centre down to the wharf ready for an afternoon exploring Halifax’s historic harbour was great fun.
A particular highlight was Prof. Victor Dubowitz (WMS Founding President) steering the ship for us all. ☀️🌊🇨🇦😍
The rest of the delegates took part in a selection of other activities then all came together later on for a reception.

One minute it’s an empty shell then in no time at all, exhibition stands are built, poster boards are up, bags are stuffed, the registration desk is ready and we have a room full of nearly 700 in-person and nearly 400 virtual attendees eager for the opening ceremony!
