A life without mirrors…
Part of my daily life is witnessing brides pull themselves apart in front of the mirror, you’ve heard me talk about it previously, and I got to wondering what life would be like if we couldn’t see our own reflection.
Now I have children, a daughter and a son, both pre teenagers, and I have never put mirrors in their bedrooms nor encouraged them to analyse their appearance. The opposite in fact. It seems to have had a positive effect, even in the face of all the image conscious media they’re inadvertently exposed to. They’re confident and self assured, but each day that goes by I wait, I wait for the insecurities to set in and I am on stand by to deal with it. On the school run recently, my daughter, who has just turned 11, was looking at herself in the car mirror and questioning why her nose is so wide! And of course it isn’t! And it wouldn’t matter if it was right! And for me there are days where I feel happy and confident and then I will pass by a mirror and see a woman much older and squiffy looking than the one I feel looking back at me. So I have decided not to look in the mirror where at all possible, because I am blessed to have reached a wonderful age that many others have had stolen from them, and with age comes beauty and confidence, we must learn to embrace it.
I am always lecturing women within the walls of the boutique to practice a positive mindset and build a stronger relationship with themselves, mind over matter. Easier said than done in today’s society but there’s definitely been a shift for the better in the last ten years, I have witnessed it. Women younger than me have a much more body positive attitude which is wonderful to see and the culture of women supporting women and building each other up is most certainly on the rise.
So am I going to ditch the mirrors in the shop? No, of course not, disaster, but I am going to look in the mirror less and challenge media which is aimed at making billions by reinforcing our insecurities.
Self confidence is a super power and we all have the potential to master it
