Dearest followers. At Browns of Totnes we work by appointment for a number of reasons. First and foremost is so that your appointment is relaxed and without interruptions but also we’re an independent business balancing family life with work. For these reasons and more you will not always find us in residence if you arrive unannounced or someone may already be in for their appointment and the door locked.
To avoid any frustration please plan ahead and book in to gain the most out of your experience. We are flexible with appointment times and also offer select evenings and one Sunday a month. You will be treated well and bridal shopping should be a very special memory so plan ahead.

Did you know…

The bridal industry and other designer labels get bad press at times for sizing ‘coming up small’, but it actually doesn’t! Have you heard of ‘vanity sizing?’ No? That’s when fashion brands label their clothes with smaller sizes than their actual measurements, this is to appeal to our own vanity and encourage us to buy. High end brands tend not to do this although sizes have changed over the years. Have you ever been into a vintage shop or found a vintage item on a market labelled 14 for example, but it looks like a modern size 8? Well this is why. Today measurements are much more generous than decades ago.

My point is… ignore the number on the dress entirely. Does it fit? Are you comfortable? Do you feel fabulous? Then let’s go…

But if we do have to talk numbers, to give you an idea, then Browns caters for up to a 26 in our curvy range and up to a 16/18 in our regular range 🤍

Something I already knew but has become even more apparent lately, particularly this last year, has been how almost everyone is dealing with something life changing. You only have to scratch the surface of peoples lives to find that most are dealing with unimaginable difficulties.
Moreover I think there’s something emotive about wedding dress shopping that brings things to the surface, especially when people feel they’re in a safe space (and of course surrounded by women 🙂) that encourages them to open up.
I am frequently floored by your stories and I am in awe of your strength.

Be kind and gentle for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about is my Monday morning mantra.

The loose link here is how my customers enrich my own life and how grateful I am. You continually bring your friends and families and your positivity and personalities to my shop and you leave me such meaningful feedback. Thanks to your word of mouth I do very little advertising and almost everyone that comes through the door has been recommended.

The last time I saw this lovely lady we were 18, at sixth form and everything lay before us. Little did we know what life had in store but fast forward twenty something years, throw in a wealth of life experience (a fair few lessons 🫣) and we have crossed paths again.
Here she is, for her final fitting, about to marry the man she loves (in the most gorgeous dress 😜). She has not changed one bit and still looks like the shiny, beautiful 18 year old I used to know.

Appointments are always private and relaxed with no interruptions. The aim of the game is for you, the bride, to take charge of what you want to try with the advice and encouragement of those you trust the most. I can also help with the process and will happily assist if you wish.
Your appointment will last around 1.5 hours.
It’s helpful if you wear neutral underwear but don’t worry if not.
Drinks are provided but if you want to add a little extra special to it then upgrade to a glass of bubbles. Details sent prior to your appointment.

Please note that Browns has a no photo policy and we respectfully ask you do not take pictures wearing the styles (please see previous post for a full explanation) we do it the old school way!

Every appointment is different but what I have found is the process will unfold naturally if you are relaxed and comfortable and given the opportunity to explore what works for you, rule out what you don’t like and then hopefully hit the nail on the head by discovering the one!

No matter how nervous you are about the process or how much you want to rebel against the expectations of wedding dress shopping (understood), I promise you, it will be a positive experience, so do not worry 🤍
