Construction prospects: will 2024 be a less challenging year?

UK construction has endured challenging economic conditions during 2023, as UK economic growth effectively stalled.

While economic conditions will remain sluggish over the coming year, the value of construction starts is forecast as steady after the sharp falls seen during 2023. A further strengthening in starts is forecast for 2025 as UK economic growth gathers momentum, supported by a pick-up in household spending and business investment.

Construction activity dropped sharply last month, led by a further slump in housebuilding.

The S&P Global/CIPS UK latest Purchasing Managers’ Index (PMI) plunged from 50.8 in August to 45.0 in September (scores above 50.0 suggest growth, while those under 50.0 indicate decline).

The index for residential work, standing at 38.1, was the biggest cause of the drop, although civil engineering and commercial work also saw declines.

Trade bodies call on government to “Get Britain Building.”

The relaunched campaign’s message to politicians is that investing in UK construction will help drive the economic recovery the country badly needs.

The Building Alliance, Builders Merchant Federation and the Federation of Master Builders, have re-launched the Get Britain Building campaign to coincide with the Party Conference season.

The campaign’s message to politicians is that investing in UK construction will help drive the economic recovery the country badly needs as construction affords a strong multiplier effect driven by UK produced goods and skilled labour.
