🌟 Did you visit Miss Havisham at our Christmas Dickensian Open Day?

In “Great Expectations “ by Charles Dickens, the wealthy and elderly spinster Miss Havisham lives in her crumbling mansion Satis House, jilted on her wedding day many years ago, still dressed in her wedding dress, sitting at her long and decaying wedding table, watching the spiders envelop the once festive feast in cobwebs while the mould infested wedding cake crumbles and decays.

We recreated the scene in our grand first floor Ballroom, and visitors were treated to an immersive experience by the aging and miserable Miss Havisham, recounting her story and regretting her treatment of her beautiful adopted daughter Estella, who she brought up to take her revenge on all men by breaking their hearts, especially the novel’s young hero Pip.

🎩 Characters from other Dickens novels such as Scrooge, Mr Micawber, the Artful Dodger, Little Dorrit, Estella and Dombey haunted the fine rooms, while a string duet played festive tunes in front of the enormous Christmas tree as well as delightful musical performances in the Drawing Room.

🎄Mulled wine and Festive refreshments were served in Ushers Bar, and Dickens movies were screened in our luxury cinema.

It was an amazing day at Parade House, attended by over 260 visitors at “The Best Event Venue in Wiltshire 2024”🏆

What a wonderful Christmas Party we hosted last night in the Ballroom - thank you to our wonderful staff and fantastic guests for all your support!

We were thrilled to welcome the Mayor of Trowbridge Cllr Stephen Cooper, former Mayor Cllr Graham Hill, Deputy Mayor Cllr Stewart Palmen, Trowbridge Town Crier Trevor Heeks, so many Trowbridge and Wiltshire town Councillors, Kez Garner, chair of , BBC Radio Wiltshire, the Wiltshire Times and so many other friends and supporters.

Champagne and mulled wine flowed all evening and the highlight was a concert performance by Solsbury Hill Ensemble and a duet by our incredible and talented staff Monika and Jo - more to follow!

Get into the Christmas Spirit and learn how to make exquisitely decorated Christmas Biscuits, perfect for gifting on Christmas Day.

This Festive Workshop will be taught by the celebrated queen of Sugarcraft, Chris Orton of Grace and Clover, whose wealth of experience will give you the confidence to do this at home. You’ll learn to decorate like a pro with new icing techniques, and you’ll take away a gift box of 6 of your own hand decorated Christmas cookies, perfect for gifting on Christmas Day!

Our Cocktails Night with Charlie Greenwood on Sat 7th December is now SOLD OUT but we're delighted to announce two more evenings of Christmas Cocktails & Dinner at Parade House in our cosy and intimate Ushers Bar.

Come and see Parade House decorated for the holidays. Down in Ushers Bar, we will be getting out the Christmas jumpers and the Michael Bublé CDs and our mixmistress Ala has devised a tantalising selection of seasonal cocktails that are just perfect for a yuletide celebration.

Can you see Parade House with its pediment and railings on the top left in this engraving from 1860?

This was captured at a time when Trowbridge was still one of the wealthiest towns in the West of England, as a result of the wool industry, with mills popping up all over town.

Parade House was built in 1720 by Thomas Houlton, when wealthy clothiers wanted their ‘new builds’ in the centre of affluent Trowbridge, gentlemen’s residences or even “ the centrepiece of a stretch of palaces along Fore Street” as penned by Pevsner in his Guide to Wiltshire in reference to Parade House.

It’s a quintessential Grade 1 Listed Georgian townhouse, with beautifully proportioned rooms, a grand original staircase, and an elegant Ballroom. Even the pitched paving in front is Grade 1 Listed, some of the oldest in the country.

You can visit our beautiful“palace” for any of our public events, including our Victorian Open Day on Saturday December 14th for a Dickensian Christmas, with Scrooge, Miss Haversham and other characters haunting the fine rooms all decked up for the festive season with Christmas trees, mulled wine, live music, Christmas movies in our luxury cinema and festive refreshments in the historic vaults.

Step into the magical world of Charles Dickens this Christmas, and see the beautiful rooms of Parade House all decked up for the Festive Season.

Tickets are now available for our final Victorian Christmas Open Day on Saturday 14th December.

Come and meet the Dickensian characters Scrooge, Miss Havisham and Mr Micawber as they haunt the fine rooms of Parade House and interact with the public for an immersive experience from Moonstone Theatre Company.

Take your selfies around the massive Christmas tree spanning the full height of our grand staircase, listen to live musical entertainment as you learn about the history of Parade House, enjoy Mulled Wine, mince pies, scones and other festive refreshments in Ushers Bar in the historic vaults, while special Christmas Movies are being played in our luxurious Screening Room.

Tickets are £3 per person and are available in five time slots between 11am and 4pm.

NOT SUITABLE FOR CHILDREN UNDER 6 YEARS OF AGE.

Parade House Trowbridge has no lift and regrettably we are unable to offer wheelchair access. We regret we cannot accommodate pushchairs or dogs.

An Enchanting Edwardian Romance comes to The Screening Room

Merchant Ivory's delightful adaptation of EM Forster's A Room With A View is still a glorious piece of entertainment. It's not just an enchanting comedy of manners about the English upper class at home and abroad, but also a soaring romantic drama about being true to your heart rather than to society's rules.

Helena Bonham-Carter is well brought-up young Englishwoman Lucy Honeychurch, touring Italy in the early 20th century with her prim older cousin, played by the marvellous Maggie Smith. At a hotel in Florence, she encounters the free-spirited George Emerson (Julian Sands). Confused and stirred by the raw unfettered romanticism of Tuscany, Lucy returns to England and accepts a proposal from her pompous and buttoned-up suitor Cecil (played to comic perfection by Daniel Day-Lewis). It's an eminently sensible match, but is it the right one for the spirited and headstrong Lucy? When George reappears in her life, she must decide between the two men...

No film has better captured that awkward transition in history from strait-laced Victorian morality to the free-thinking emotion of the Edwardian era, all set against a sumptuous backdrop of picturesque Florence and the English countryside. A superb roll-call of some of Britain's finest character actors provide rich support, not least the divine Maggie Smith and wonderful and much-missed Denholm Elliott as George's impassioned father. This is pure delight from start to finish.
