Lesley Riddoch of Speaking Out fame visited recently and this photograph took her right back to the time when she organised the Speaking out Programme at the School house - see below - on eof the most difficult programmes she ever made, she famously said: Shellenberg arrived 2 hours late and at first noone form Eigg would day a thing. Then Allan MacRae from Assynt started and opened the floodgates by simply saying" I can see the proprietor here has not much regard for the tenants"...

Eigg news footage from the BBC was shown at St Columba's CoS Tuesday 16 Aug 7.30.
This free event was curated for the Voices project by Lucy who provided the fillm clips and Camille who commented!
The film programme was around 40 minutes and included the following:
Doctor Maclean
Shellenberg before the forced sale of Eigg
Dispute between Schellenberg and islanders increases. Rolls Royce fire
Schellenberg description of his sale and repurchase of Eigg and islanders discontent
Maruma’s second visit to Eigg and his plans for the future
Maruma fails to deliver his promises
Highland Councillors support the Eigg community in advance of it possibly coming up for re-sale
Islanders decide it would be better if the community owned. Explanation of Maruma loans
Eigg community buyout success
Faobhar, Eigg buyout successful (Gaelic and English)

The show was very well attended, with Eigg girls now living away from Eigg and visiting their families in attendance. Catriona now living in New Zealand and Eilidh now living in Surrey were especially pleased to see this footage showing Eigg folks who have now passed away, and pictures of the school and the shop from their childhood. Many of our Eigg visitors also attended and their comments in our visitors book showed how much they appreciate the progress we have made since the buy-out and the distance travelled!

Why is there an American flag in our exhibition? Because American friend of EIgg and descendant of Eigg emigrant Bob Giles from Detroit organised his senator to have it flown over the capitol on 12 June 1997 in honour of the people of EIgg!!!
