Nothing happened & everything happened.

I didn’t think I would be posting this today. But I feel compelled to share.

Last night I eagerly drove down to Exeter for an amazing networking event, which I thoroughly enjoyed. But I want to share with you what happened before this.

I parked in a car park a bit further away from the venue as was in my hubbys van, therefore couldn’t park in the multi storey.

I had my glad rags on, one of my fav dresses, but still with my trainers on (now in hindsight, a blessing!)

As I pulled into the car park, I saw 2x mid 30-40s males who seemed to have already clocked me, & staring at me.

They started walking towards where I had parked & seemed to be taking a great interest in what I was doing.

I instantly said to myself ‘oh s**t’, because I now had to get out of the van & get a ticket. Which meant basically passing the path they were walking.

Luckily I had my anorak in the van, so put that on to minimise what they could see of my dress, got the exact change out of my purse, & dashed it over to the machine, keen not to make eye contact.

As I got my ticket, I could feel their eyes burning in the back of my head & could hear them sniggering as they had now stood within a few metres, to stare at me, while drinking from their beer cans.

As a confident, outgoing female, I now felt very vulnerable at this point as no one was visible in the car park. But luckily I had my trainers on, so literally ran back to the van put the ticket in & started rushed up towards the high street.

Nothing happened, & everything happened.

For the next 10mins as I walked to the venue a million things were running through my mind.

‘Was I overreacting?’
‘Did I do something to attract this behaviour?’
‘Should I have not worn that dress?’
‘Should I have confronted the men?’

With adrenaline running through my body, I was on high alert, cautious as to whether they had followed me.

As I arrived at the venue I felt a big relief.

I shared my experience with a few women there who then offered to walk with me after the event to my car which I accepted.

On reflection this morning, the biggest thing that got me was the women’s reactions as I told them what happened in the car park.

… they got it.

They totally understood & had personal experience of numerous situations they had also encountered this before.

That feeling of being watched, intimidated, heckled, ogled at. Feeling totally vulnerable to their next move, feeling like their prey.

Why is it that as a 36 year old woman living in 2024. This intimidation is STILL widely experienced behaviour amongst women in today’s society?

I looked up some stats. ‘1 in 2 women feel unsafe walking home alone at night’ (End Violence Against Women), and these experiences I heard last night is why.

I am not sure what my exact purpose of sharing this post is. Only that I suppose, if & when you experience this as a woman, don’t belittle the experience, don’t minimise your fear response, share with others how it made you feel. We need to talk more about this inexcusable behaviour & call it out.

Back in 2017 I had been struggling with a MISALIGNED LIFE for a number of years.

Things finally took a nose dive & really started unravelling when my nan got ill, whilst at the same time we were trying to start a family & ran into fertility issues.

This on top of feeling like I was wearing a mask at work day in day out in a career role full of responsibility. Was the tipping point for me.

My mind, body & soul said no more… I cracked & ended up needing 3months off work with daily panic attacks, insomnia, raging anxiety & depression.

Looking back, this was my sign from the universe I needed to seriously take a look at my life & realign my path to what truly lit me up.

Fast forward 7 years, 5 solo businesses later, 2 incredible little boys in tow. I finally feel like I am back where I was always meant to be! ☀️

But, even though my path went off course, I still gained masses of amazing experience & expertise from my career in the corporate Learning & Development space.

I didn’t realise I HOW MUCH this experience would give me a head start growing my business!🛼

‘Well I'm big on hugging & on the big day & the day before, there will usually be several hugs with my couples.
Not always in the middle of the ceremony, but when it's needed...

But in the run-up to the wedding, it's all about communication, either email, WhatsApp or phone calls.

No couple should ever feel they are floundering around, and I tell them, that once they've booked me they can get in touch whenever they have a question, an idea, a dilemma or a problem. I'll always be happy to answer or talk things through with them.

If it's at all possible, I recommend a ceremony rehearsal the afternoon before. This way everyone involved in their ceremony knows what they are doing, where they're going, in what order, and when. They are then able to relax & enjoy their pre-wedding evening without stressing.’
