Last Monday it was time for another simplybetter away day. So, we took to the offices of our brilliant suppliers, Universal Live , for an immersive brand showcase day. The point of the exercise was to reconnect with our team and encouraged them to look back at our varied catalogue of events to see if we could learn anything from what’s come before 💭
Movies were a central theme of the day so, using some of our favourites as a jumping off point, we considered the role storytelling plays in what we do, discussed how we could push the creative boundaries to deliver unique client experiences and championed the importance of simplybetter teamwork.
It was an exciting and enriching day that got all of us inspired about the potential of what we could achieve. Now, we’re excited to see where this inspiration takes us… 💥

Not ones to rest of our ethical laurels, we’re back with more sustainability learnings. Members of our team recently undertook training on ‘Understanding Net Zero’, with the brilliant team at Isla - sustainability in events , the event industry’s sustainability body.
The course was invaluable in helping us to understand what net-zero was all about, and the role we play in helping to reduce global emissions. As a framework of global actions which are part of the Paris Agreement, it’s on us all to do what we can to help reduce global temperatures 📉
And here were the big take aways…
1. If the planet heats to over 1.5 °C by 2050, this could lead to an extinction level event.
2. The aim is to reduce greenhouse gases by 50% in 2030 and by 90% in 2050.
3. 26 countries have net-zero laws.
4. 55 countries have net-zero policies in place.
5. 17 countries have made net-zero pledges.
6. The UK has legally committed to net zero by 2050.
While there is still so much the event industry could be doing to reduce waste, simplybetter have made small inroads to help us prevent or offset our emissions where possible. We’re currently rolling out event emission tracking through isla’s TRACE platform. In this first year, we’re creating a baseline on which we can start to build out a more robust net-zero mission with specific reduction targets 📝
In addition, we’ve also signed up to The Climate Pledge which brings together the world’s top companies and unites them around a commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040.

With clients like Gainsight, we’re always being challenged to go bigger and better. And that’s especially true of their annual CxO EMEA Summit.
We helped them host in June which is an executive retreat for members of the customer success sector, giving them chance to catch up on important issues and discuss the future of the industry. It’s also a relaxed affair that puts a focus on connection and embracing Gainsight’s ethos of ‘childlike joy’.
And this year, they wanted something special. So, we embraced the Ascot location and created an equestrian themed event with actual live ponies. It was a fun activation that put the emphasis on relaxed networking with a difference 🐴
And the response from the client was outstanding:

Last week, members of the simplybetter team attended an online lecture hosted by Isla - sustainability in events, the event industry’s sustainability body. It was led by the brilliant Emma Grace Bailey from PlasticFree.
It was an illuminating talk on the dangers of plastic pollution and the role the events industry plays in that. With so many fascinating talking points, here were our five biggest takeaways:
🌍 Plastic is greenhouse gas in solid form: If it was classed as a country, it would be the 5th largest emitter in the world.
🌍 Only 9% of all plastic has been recycled. Only 9%. And that include much of the waste we all recycle each week.
🌍 The mass of all plastic produced is double the size of the Earth. That’s a lot.
🌍 Between 2012 and 2022, 731 new plastic pollution policies were created which is a promising start, but there’s still lots to be done.
🌍 The UN and its members are working on a Global Plastics Treaty to reduce harmful chemicals in plastics and phase out the production of single-use plastics. It aims to vastly reduce the production of plastic around the world, and we hope it succeeds!
Thankfully, we’re already implementing loads of new initiatives to help combat our own carbon footprint and those of our clients. Working with Isla, we’re tracking all event emissions through their TRACE platform, doing what we can to reduce, reuse and recycle all assets. We’re also providing a range of offsetting options to our clients such a tree planting and supporting sustainable initiatives. And in our day-to-day work, we continue to work with suppliers who share our sustainability goals and have implemented dedicated recycling bins in the office and separate waste onsite wherever possible.
While we realise there’s still a long way to go, we’re proud to be doing what we can to make the event industry more sustainable and more responsible ♻

We’re in a wistful mood, thinking about this week’s #ThrowbackThursday, and our work with team Shark Beauty to deliver a disruptive brand activation at Lollapalooza in Berlin back in 2023.
The client tasked us with taking over the music festival and boosting their brand awareness with the aim of ‘spreading the love’ with a romantic and youthful activation. They wanted show-stopping designs and lots of unforced interaction with their range of haircare products 🤩
So, we jumped to the challenge and created three experiential zones throughout the festival site. The first comprised of a two-storey container with free styling sessions available to passersby throughout the day, and a top floor meet and greet space for notable influencers. The second site was a unique VIP space for exclusively invited guests who were also treated to free slushies alongside a free hairstyling session. And finally, the third space was allocated as content creator lounge for influencers to do their thing while networking with celebrity stylists.
With a focus less on sales and more on wider brand awareness, it’s fair to say the activation was a success. Location specific hashtags at each site resulted in a significant spike in social activity and the overall activation built a loyal following among brand advocates, cementing SharkBeauty as a desirable brand within their focused demographic 💗

Rachel, our Event Project Director, and Esther, our Production Design Lead, were in the audience for a range of drone light shows delivered by the team there. It was an impressive sight and they loved every minute. A big thank you to the team for asking us along 🙌

On Sunday, members of our brilliant simplybetter team took part in this year’s Bradford Dragon Boat Festival. We were raising money for The Immanuel Project and their brilliant work.
It was a glorious day with lots of exciting activities going on and plenty of food to boot. Our team were called ‘Let Paddle Commence…’ and went into it with fighting spirit. And it's a good job we did as there were 28 teams taking part, not to mention some of them being professional racers, tackling 29 races in total over a 7 hour day. It was a Herculean task but our sb dragons were up to the challenge 🐉
Not only did we win two races - one of them by quite a bit - but we came 8th overall with many hailing our team's first ever dragon boat effort a huge success! But more important than any of that, we managed to raise a whopping £1,160 for the Immanuel Project 🎉

❓ Did you know that the events industry is responsible for 10% of global CO2 emissions… ❓
It’s a lot.
As much as we love this industry, it’s clear: events are wasteful. So, it’s important that we do our bit to create more sustainable events. Like the one we ran in May…
Our client approached us to create an internal event that had three core objectives:
🌎 Make sustainable choices throughout the event design
🌎 Reduce, reuse and recycle materials where possible
🌎 Identify opportunities to minimise environmental impacts
So, we set about doing that by implementing a range of sustainable measures, including working with a sustainably focused venue in @DoncasterRaces, building reusable assets, utilising energy efficient sets and lighting, arranging coaches to minimise travel emissions, using recyclable serveware and creating an event app and recyclable badges to reduce paper.
Then, we tracked everything through TRACE, an award-winning carbon emissions platform created by isla, the events industry’s sustainability body.
Doing that, allowed us to track all waste and emissions and the results were incredible:
🥇 85.2% of materials were reused, donated or repurposed
🥇 Only 6.4% of the total waste ended up at landfill
And there’s still more we could do. Thankfully, we’re committed to delivering more responsible and sustainable events for our clients and the world.

Best Stand Design & Experience at this year's Euronics UK Showcase 2024 🏆
Now that's an award we can be proud of...
SharkNinja approached us to create an immersive stand for the event and we jumped at the challenge. With only a few weeks to turn our concepts into reality, we created a wrap around stand that brought attendees into the world of SharkNinja and their varied product range.
The trick was finding the balance between a stand that was aesthetically pleasing while also creating an impact experience for delegates that felt both immersive and engaging. And the award would suggest we achieved that in spades!

This week, we’re preparing for Reckitt’s annual The Science Inside Symposium. A distinguished name in the world of hygiene and wellness, Reckitt is bringing together over 5000 delegates from Global R&D. And it’s our job to help them create a seamless hybrid event that immerses both the people in the room and those logging on elsewhere.
This year, we’re creating a purpose-built space at their Science & Innovation Centre in Hull to house all the various delegates, lunches, plenaries, and breakout sessions – plus we’ll be helping them throw an art gallery-themed exhibition to showcase the innovative work their people are doing.
There’s lots still to do, but we’re excited to finally be bringing this one to life…

OMG - proving the worth of your event
We can’t quite believe it’s been a whole year since we delivered our ‘Designing events that drive better engagement’ webinar. Despite it being a while ago, and the events industry moving at the speed of light, the challenges and objectives we looked at are still super relevant today.
💭 We talk about the importance of your event embedding behaviour change, and extending the lifespan beyond the event to maximise value.
💷 With budgets under more scrutiny than ever, it’s becoming all the more vital to prove the worth of an event and justify the expenditure.
✅ It is widely accepted that many events could potentially deliver twice the value on the same budget, if they’re done right.
❌ Unfortunately, most events achieve below their potential because it was never clear what they were actually setting out to achieve.
An event can only create true value for stakeholders if it changes behaviours – and we can measure the impact of those changes, using a very simple approach, known as OMG 🎯 :
O – Objectives: What are our goals for this event?
M – Measures: How will we know if we’ve achieved them?
G – Gains: What value will they bring to the business if we get this right?
By setting your objectives first – before even thinking about measures, you can be clear about what you want people to do differently as a result of the experience.

Stand-out brand engagement experience for Remington UK
We’ve just delivered a stand-out brand engagement experience for Remington UK!
Over the Bank Holiday Weekend, while many people were soaking up some sun, we were hard at work, building and operating a pop-up stand at @TheTraffordCentre to promote Remington’s new ONE range of unisex styling products.
As you can see, the overnight build took a lot of work with 7 joiners working 9 hours to create the finished thing. Then it was a simple case of manning the stand for 27 hours across the three-day weekend…
But all that hard work paid off as we had stellar engagement levels from the public! In total, we had 1162 visitors to the site, with 112 of them taking advantage of our exclusive stylist appointments and a further 361 of them walking away with prizes from the branded grabbing machine! But more importantly, we were able to help Remington land their ONE range in style!
We’re excited to see where the rest of the campaign goes and can’t wait to work together on the next ONE!
