Happy Winter Solstice! ❄️

It’s the shortest day of the year and the beginning of astronomical winter (according to the meteorological calendar, winter began on 1st December ☺️)

I managed to get my garland up just in time to celebrate and enjoy the longest night - and the promise of those longer, lighter days to come …

~recipe~

Spruce, pine, box, ivy, holly, cypress, skimmia and rosemary

With dried daucus seed heads and teasels for some detail and texture

All sourced from our cottage garden here in the Yorkshire Wolds ♥️

Just a spot of extra research…

Ah! I love the chance to put all three of my ‘hats’ on - Historian - Flower Grower - Florist

During my wreath making workshops I take my guests on a whistle-stop tour of the history of wreaths, and share the fascinating (often bizarre, sometimes alarming) folklore behind the greenery we use to make them 🌲

I give these talks every year, and have done a fair old bit of research, but I do love to embark on a spot of extra reading each time - to find those new nuggets of festive folklore! Those ‘ohhh’ moments, those ‘ah I see!’, those ‘oh how strange!’ bits of our wreathing history 😁

Just can’t resist…. 📚

Magical and life giving Ivy

So happy to see the ivy covered in wasps, bees and ladybirds today 😊

Ivy flowers are a great source of nectar for pollinating insects, heading through the autumn into the winter… 🐝

…and the berries are a high fat treat for the birds too

It’s no wonder then that our ancestors thought that ivy was life-giving, and that it came to represent eternal life

People believed that ivy growing on or near a house protected its occupants from evil - in fact that’s one of the reasons we use it in the Christmas wreaths we place on our doors in midwinter

This is going to be a lovely start to the season...

Not only will you create something stunning to adorn your door this Christmas, but in this relaxed and friendly workshop you’ll also discover the curious and magical history behind our wreath making traditions.

This afternoon event will start at midday with festive drinks and homemade baked treats.

I will take you on a whistle-stop tour of our Christmas wreath making history, and explain the hidden symbolism and meanings behind the foliage we’ll be using…

You will then enjoy a delicious homemade Side Oven Bakery lunch including freshly made breads, hearty soup and homemade cakes.

I’ll then guide you through the process of making your own luxury wreath, using seasonal and sustainable ingredients. All materials are included to make a sumptuously full wreath.

Includes festive drinks, homemade treats and a hearty homemade lunch ☺️

Yorkshire grown gift bouquets, full of late summer jewels…

It’s starting to get a little bit chilly and my cut flower season is edging towards its end, but I feel like the garden is offering some exquisite ‘last hurrah’ blooms, don’t you think?

Those late summer blooms, that I feel I’ve waited all season for ☺️

Dahlias, zinnias, asters, China asters, feverfew, cosmos, snapdragons, solidago, sedum, marjoram, perennial grasses and variegated foliage.

Wedding flowers that truly celebrate the seasons.

A last hurray of summer, with a whisper of autumn….

… for R & P who were married last Saturday at ♥️

A joyful blend of sunflowers, dahlias, asters, and garden roses (amongst other gorgeous garden blooms), with delicate grasses and scented foliage

All locally & sustainably grown ~ here in the Yorkshire Wolds. Cut and arranged especially for this lovely couple ☺️

I’m a little bit in love with these China Asters that have just started flowering… This variety of China Aster (or Callistephus chinensis) is called ‘Tower Chamois’ - in a stunning Apricot blush shade 😍 The seed for this sumptuous bloom was brought over to Europe from China by French missionaries in 1728.
