This is quite spooky as was only talking about him with a mate on Friday night. Just heard the news of the passing of this musical genius . Got the privilege of working with him a few years back at a 90’s festival, such a nice man and incredible talent live. Your song Sunchyme will always be in my anthems crate.

So today is another sad day for nightclub industry. A couple of weeks ago it was announced that Rekom had appointed administrators and today we learned that they have now closed at least 16 venues from their portfolio.

Some of these venues are former residencies or ones that I have done cover work in. I have been very fortunate to be able to work professionally within this industry for over 30 years and I’m glad I got to work in it during its highest points. It’s so sad to see its demise. But to blame just the ‘cost of living crisis’ and ‘cost of running a business’ crisis masks over 15+ years of challenges and changing social norms for commercial clubland.

👉🏼 Competing priorities: many younger customers actually now favour their health over hedonism, letting their hair down (and spending money frivolously) much less, Younger adults are just drinking less than they ever have before, they might be doing other things in some part.
During the summer season, some are saving whatever money they have for expensive holidays or to attend a festival, some are going to day parties and are too tired or skint to continue into the night.

👉🏼 Dating is now done on an app: gone are the days when you’d meet randomly on a night out and… well, you know the rest. Also speaking of apps, having negative reviews, comments or videos on social media platforms can make a big difference to your social plans.

👉🏼 Smoking and Va**ng bans: this changed the game significantly and required investment in smoking areas and, well, it just pi**ed customers off for many years.

👉🏼 Music consumption: people used to go to clubs to hear new music before it hit the commercial charts, to hear remixes, mashups, DJs now have to keep up with music at a pace never seen before, with customers being able to hear what they want when they want it (Spotify/TikTok) however the retro side of music still remains strong and in demand.

👉🏼 Pubs die, bars die, clubs die: In the good old days Pubs would only have a license until 11pm and people would frequently go from a pub to a bar (with a slightly later licence) then eventually ending up in a club until 2am all through a vibrant high street at night.
These days pubs and bars have been granted later licences so they can compete against the club which meant later starts for the clubs and people run out of money quicker. These ‘feeder’ establishments closing makes destination nightclubs less appealing.

👉🏼 Knife crime and sexual assault (amongst many other crimes) rife: it’s just not safe out there in some places, making staying at home a pretty desirable option.

👉🏼 Student market is nowhere near as buoyant: linked to many of the above points, but student promoters (who’d keep the tills ringing outside of the traditional weekend nights) are fishing in an ever-shrinking pond.

👉🏼 Covid deleted an entire 2 years of fresh 18-19 year old customers: the clubs closed, people stayed in (and got comfortable); and an entire new generation of clubbers weren’t fed into the system! Without that groundbreaking first (legal) night out to a club when you turn 18, when do you get hooked? And when they did finally come out post-covid, boy was it a different place! Not the exciting hedonistic experience they expected. Sanitised, socially distanced, mask-laden and full of ‘rules’.

It’s a wonder it’s survived this long !

I genuinely wish all the best to my industry contacts and connections that have been affected with today’s closures.
