The Olympics are already shaping their sustainability policy- here's what you need to know:

🏗️ No new permanent venues will be built solely for Olympic use- organisers will utilise existing venues around the city (and some beyond). This initiative should save a whopping $150 million, which will be allocated elsewhere in the Olympic budget.

🚗 LA 2028 will be a 'no car games'- the cities' public transport systems will be adapted and expanded to ensure that no spectators will be driving, with over 3000 buses to be borrowed from around the country.

🌿Sustainability was a core objective in the planning of Paris 2024, and the organisers of LA's games are picking up these targets.

Are these goals realistic?

One of the more impactful policies you can implement to make your event more sustainable is to go paperless; most significantly, with your tickets. 🎫

The positive effects of paperless events on wastage and environmental damage can't be understated, but digital tickets bring their own set of issues... let's talk about it! 💬

The main benefits of printed tickets are for branding, advertising, and sentimentality purposes.

👐Receiving a well designed, sturdy ticket creates higher anticipation for your event, and consolidates your branding with attendees. It also constitutes as a meaningful souvenir once the event is over; every festival fan loves a scrapbook full of ticket stubs!

However, the printing and shipping process behind physical tickets add to the environmental damage caused by your event, and if they become lost or damaged it can cause a big headache.

🌎Digital tickets are instant, convenient, and environmentally friendly. Despite their innumerable benefits, they are not perfect; where a physical ticket can be ripped or lost, a digital code is vulnerable to tech failures such as low battery or lack of internet. Digital tickets can also isolate potential attendees who aren't tech-savvy, or don't own a printer.

There's no easy solution; attendees want both the convenience of the digital and the sentimentality of the physical.

Implementing digital tickets will help to make your festival far more sustainable; offering printed tickets for a small fee can allow passionate attendees to still get their souvenir at a much lesser environmental consequence than supplying them for the whole event. 💭

What do you think? Eliminate physical tickets entirely, or hang on to the sentimental?

The nature of our work at Event Site Design is often sensitive, and we adhere strictly to the unique confidentiality plans of each client. 🤫

This means we have an incredible portfolio of projects we can’t always showcase- but rest assured, our clients are thrilled with the results (just look at this glowing feedback from a recent event!).

While these confidential projects may not present great billboard material, they represent a significant portion of our work, and we've achieved some major wins this year. 🎉

Stay tuned for exciting updates—big projects are on the horizon, and we’re eager to share what we can, when we can.

Shockwaves were sent around the UK on Sunday night when Oasis teased their comeback, officially announced on Tuesday morning.

We're sure that you've already heard the news (how could you miss it?), but as the number of tour dates increases we're only just starting to understand the monumental effects these events will have on the UK.

💰 After Taylor Swift's Eras Tour has left the country with approximately £1b, analysists are projecting the same amount from Oasis

🎸 A surge of demand has resulted in the addition of extra concerts already, with a current total of 17 across 4 cities

📧 So many people have entered the ballot for a presale code that the service has crashed, leaving most without confirmation emails

👣 The immense web traffic that major ticketing sites will experience when tickets go up on Saturday morning will likely cause significant issues

Alongside the preparations fans are making to fight for their tickets, there has been outrage as hotels across the UK are cancelling previous bookings for the dates of Oasis gigs and reselling them at 3x the price.

This reunion is one of the biggest events the music industry has seen for a long time, and this impact will spill into tourism, hospitality, and retail as fans from around the world will be drawn to the UK for the gigs.

Are you a fan? If so, good luck tomorrow morning. 🍀

Free pizza and beer on a Friday afternoon is great, don't get us wrong- but this alone doesn't create an 'amazing company culture' as implied by many job adverts. 🍕🍺

Real company culture is fostered by a well-structured support system, frequent and open communication, people-centric leaders and positive management, amongst many other details.

☀️ The recent bank holiday provides the perfect opportunity for a company culture check-in; how did your team feel about coming back to work on Tuesday?

🧑‍⚕️ What can you do to keep them happy and healthy?

🙋 Do they feel like they can honestly raise any concerns they might have with management?

🌃 How do they feel every Sunday night?

All of these questions are a great starting point to ensure that your company culture is up to scratch... and some free food on top of that wouldn't hurt. 🍔

Have you checked in with your team post bank holiday?

All of the event professionals in our network will feel this pain- what do you do when a meticulously planned event is hit with disastrous weather? 🌪️

The beginning of this bank holiday weekend has been struck by an unfortunate bout of strong winds across the country, already affecting several large music festivals:

⚠️There have been reported stage & temporary structure collapses

⚠️Flying debris is posing a safety risk within campsites, trapping attendees in their tents

⚠️Arena openings have been delayed, and line-ups are having to be adjusted

👷 On-site safety teams are working tirelessly to get these large-scale events up and running again, but these efforts are going largely unrecognised.

Why is bad weather treated as an organisational failure?

Above is a real Instagram comment responding to advice from one festival regarding the dangerous winds; unfortunately, this is not the only one of it's kind.

🌧️ Many festivals at the beginning of the season were affected by this summer's bout of severe rain and encountered the similar complaint of: "This is a disaster- why is it muddy???"

We're sure that most people reading this post have encountered this problem before; how have you navigated this in the past?

We've already discussed the steps taken towards sustainable power at WOMAD Festival last month, and we're delighted to see this spreading around the world: Lollapalooza Chicago revealed that their main stage was powered entirely by hybrid batteries this year. 🌿

⚡All audio, lighting, and visuals were run on hybrid power made up of batteries with 1.5MWh of storage, greatly reducing the amount of fuel used.

Lollapalooza is the first American festival to innovate beyond fuelled power, marking a significant step towards a greener industry around the globe. 🌎

Isle of Wight Festival 2024 have also worked to make positive changes, partnering with GeoPura to introduce hydrogen powered generators at this year's event, and Radio 1's Big Weekend are acting to greatly reduce their generator usage. 🔋

The 2024 Olympics are over! Team GB has finished in 7th place, with the third highest overall medal count. 🏅

As predicted, the US smashed all competition out of the park with 126 medals, 40 of which were golds- the same number won by China, who placed 2nd with 91 medals in total.

France placed 5th, making this their most successful Olympics in 71 years alongside the 1996 Atlanta games, where they also finished in 5th. 🤺

Sunday's closing ceremony saw Tom Cruise take the Olympic flag to LA, heralding in the 2028 games in true Mission Impossible style. 🕵‍♂️

♿ 🏓 Don't worry though, there's plenty more sport to watch; the Games begin on the 28th of August. Good luck to ParalympicsGB!

13/08/2024

Non-football events held at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are set to double to a maximum of 30 per year following a long negotiation process with Haringey Council.

The stadium has held major non-football sporting events such as NFL and boxing in the past, and played host to huge global artists such as Lady Gaga, Guns N' Roses, and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

In 2023, Tottenham Hotspur broke their contracted annual limit for alternative events when Beyoncé played there over 5 nights, leading to the application for a new license.

The council's main concerns were related to issues with noise pollution, traffic, ticket-scalping and, namely, budget.

As a result, executive director of Tottenham Hotspur has pledged to contribute £4000 for every non-football event held past the previous limit of 16.

This expanded regime will bring an influx of jobs for events professionals of all kinds to the stadium; will you be getting in touch?

Happy Monday from the Event Site Design team! 👋

What's on your agenda for this week?

09/08/2024

What we do at Event Site Design goes far beyond greenfield sites- every day we're working to innovate the very use of space itself. 🚀

We apply this effort to every project we take on: any site or indoor venue has a multitude of 3 dimensional space beyond a flat plan which needs to be considered.

⚡ This includes the visible and invisible - your event attendees aren't thinking about the location of every power line in the building, but we sure are.

The greater significance of these efforts is represented well by modern campaigns to put pianos in public spaces. 🎹

These spaces see thousands of people pass through every day, with little to no interaction with one another. People just move from A to B, and the landscape around us loses more and more significance as we look down at our phones.

Take Malta International Airport as an example. Just under 5000 people from all over the world pass through this building every day, but the space itself is merely liminal.

Introduce a piano into this area, and you suddenly have a gathering of community and culture transcending language; complete strangers singing together, applauding one another, and performing songs close to their heart. 🎶

What was once a passive departure lounge of frustrated passengers is now an opportunity for true human connection - this is what innovative use of space means.

When we're working to bring the range of sites we work on to life, this is our vision. What appears to some as blueprints, appears to us as an opportunity for greatness. 🎢

It's been nearly two weeks since WOMAD Festival finished, but the impact of this years event is lasting.

In a collaboration with green energy firm Ecotricity, WOMAD are pioneering the use of renewable energy in the festival industry. 🌿 🚀

The Charlie Gillett stage was fully powered by green energy with rechargeable Ecotricity x Grid Faeries batteries, which are soon to be reused at Massive Attack's Clifton Downs gig this month.

⛽ The UK festival scene uses approximately 12 million litres of diesel a year- WOMAD are making a vital change to reduce this environmental damage before it's too late.

For the first time in history, we're seeing equal opportunities for men and women in the Olympic Games. 🏅

When women were first allowed to compete in the 1900 Olympics, they made up just 2% of athletes- it's taken 124 years to get that figure up to 50%.

This 50/50 split does not translate up to the leadership level just yet, but things are improving with 42% of coaches being women- almost double the number 10 years ago. 👟

What do you think about this historic development and it's impact on future mega sporting events?

As an organiser, there's only so much you can do to reduce the impact of your event.

We were over the moon to see the WOMAD Festival site left spotless this Monday- but, unfortunately, this isn't the case everywhere.

If your attendees don't cooperate, it can counteract a lot of your efforts and add extra work for the clean-up crew; here are some tips to incentivise sustainable practices at your event.

✈️TRAVEL- Arriving via public transport is not only better for the environment, but can save festival-goers money and effort.

⛺TENT- Discourage tent trashing by promoting companies such as Decathlon UK who are awarding gift cards to those who return their festival tents.

🏠HOME- Remind people to save money by turning off all lights, appliances and WIFI.

👗STYLE- One of the most beloved parts of festival culture is the dressing up, but this commonly funds fast fashion and items are worn once and disposed. Encourage attendees to thrift their outfits and reward the best!

💸SAVE- One-use water bottles not only make up a huge portion of festival rubbish, but are costly. Remind your guests to save money and waste by bringing their own.

Have you implemented any of these techniques at your event?

As July draws to a close, so does Disability Pride Month - but this topic isn't going anywhere.

The last few years have seen huge advancements to accessibility in the events industry, and we need to keep this momentum going. 🚀

Consider disabled attendees at every step of your event planning, and remember that just because a site may be physically accessible, it is not necessarily welcoming to disabled guests.

This inclusivity can come from intuitive site layout, accessible event information and technology, adequately trained staff, and many other avenues which can give disabled people the confidence to attend events freely. 🤘

We'd also like to acknowledge all of those with disabilities who are working in events, and those who are trying to join this industry; there should be no barriers to entry, and all are welcome at Event Site Design. 💚

All smiles for teams ESD and OPS at WOMAD Festival this weekend!

It's been forever since we got the chance to enjoy an event which we all worked on together like this, and WOMAD was the perfect opportunity to kick back and blow off some steam. (Of course, the same can't be said for Rupert Bassadone, who was very much in demand!)

It was especially nice to hang with our sister team Ops People! 💙 💚

Who else was there? We're already counting down to next year. 🎉

29/07/2024

We want our events to be as inclusive as possible, and this goes far beyond physical access.

'Neurodiversity' is a blanket term coined in the 1990s, and refers to a range of neurological conditions such as Tourette's Syndrome, Autism, and ADHD. 🧠

Roughly 1 in 7 people in the UK are neurodivergent- in other words, 15-20% of our population! 👥

The neurodivergent community are significant, and you can have a huge positive impact by making your event open to everyone.

Here are some tips for accommodating neurodiverse people:

📰 Release event information early- Many neurodivergent people struggle with disruptions to their routine, and having time to prepare for your event can help them feel more comfortable.

🔇 Create quiet spaces- Being able to recharge in a quiet area is beneficial in preventing overstimulation

👨‍💻 Train staff- If possible, providing neurodiversity training for your staff can make a world of difference to building an accepting and calm atmosphere.

These are just starter points, but can go a long way to making neurodivergent guests feel welcome at your event.

Do you implement any of these strategies already?

🚨 AS FEATURED IN OUR NEWSLETTER 🚨

Be My Eyes: The latest in events accessibility?

The Be My Eyes app was developed in 2015 by Hans Jørgen Wiberg; after working with the Danish Association of the Blind and connecting with other visually impaired people, he realised how often they relied on facetiming family and friends for help with simple tasks. He endeavoured to streamline this process and give blind and low vision people more independence from relatives, and Be My Eyes was the result.

🌍Over 6 million volunteers from around the globe speaking 180+ languages have joined the app, and are on-call 24/7 to provide assistance to visually impaired people

In 2018, Be My Eyes launched the Accessible Customer Service Suite, partnering with major companies such as Microsoft to provide accessible customer support directly to disabled users. 📲

This technology could transform the world of events; if every festival encouraged it's use, visually impaired people would gain a network of support allowing them to attend large events more freely and with confidence. 🎪

Do you already use Be My Eyes? How would you implement it into your event's accessibility scheme?
