Join us for a very special online Artist Talk with Madi Acharya-Baskerville, the winner of the 2023 First Plinth: Public Art Award from The Royal Society of Sculptors 🏆

Using found and discarded materials sourced from coastlines, woodlands and vintage markets, her sculptures provoke ecological activism with a helping of irony, humour and playfulness.

On 21 November Acharya Baskerville will be in conversation with Damon Jackson-Waldock, Programme Director of The Art House.

🗓️ In conversation begins 18:30. Booking is required for this event. Please reserve your place through the link in our bio.

💡 It’s time for another Tutor spotlight! 💡

Here at The Art House Emily Ryalls is a curator and our Darkroom Technician as well as a Tutor. Her personal artistic practice explores the intersection of photography and performance, through traditional and alternative analogue techniques 🎞️

Emily takes inspiration from the works of 70’s female performance artists and the role that photography plays in immortalising those moments.

Here’s what Emily said about teaching at The Art House ‘I feel that we never stop learning and there’s no better way to do so than learning through each other. Workshops provide a wonderful melting pot of individuals and I’m always blown away by the creations, whether it be from the Kids Club or progressive outcomes from a four-week course.’

Join Emily for the upcoming Intro to Alternative Photography workshop on 13 November from 18:00-20:30 📸

Our History

The Art House was established in 1994 by a group of artists with a vision to provide fully-accessible studio space. In the period 1994 – 2004, a small group of artists and arts professionals worked to secure funding for arts projects, training events and artists’ residencies across Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Construction began in February 2007 on a new building in Wakefield, which included artists’ studios, accommodation, meeting rooms, community spaces and an office for The Art House team. In 2008, The Art House opened, with studios occupied by a diverse range of artists. The new Art House buiding was exemplary in terms of accessibility.

"The Art House’s mission continues to respond to the lack of facilities available to disabled artists... the diversity remit of the organisation is extended through new activity that will see them throw national focus on challenging conventional approaches to diversity and the arts." (The Arts Council, July 2014)
