🍃 The Art House is thrilled to be presenting Nature: Sensory, an exhibition that reimagines how we experience the environment 🌿

Moving beyond the visual, the show explores alternative sensory engagements with nature, such as the tactile qualities of materials or the rhythm of movement.

Featuring work by disabled artists and those living with long-term health conditions, the exhibition offers fresh, unique interpretations of Wakefield's green spaces. Through their responses to the theme Nature: Sensory, the artists challenge traditional perceptions of landscape, revealing unexpected and thought-provoking perspectives 🌱

Featuring artists Amelia Baron, Jessie Davies, Helen Thomas, Sam Metz and Michelle Duxbury, Nature: Sensory is funded with a Culture Grant by Wakefield Council as part of Our Year - Wakefield District 2024, and supported by The Art House.

🗓️ Open from 14 January - 1 February, join us for a special celebration during Artwalk night on Wednesday 29 January, 17:00-20:00.

We are fortunate enough to now offer an exclusive range of prints, paintings and collages by Wakefield-based painter and printmaker Kate Owens.

Kate’s work is inspired by her observations of surroundings from both the natural environment and man made structure. The juxtaposition of these elements interacting is what drives Owens to create.

Often working from The Art House’s Print Studio as a starting point, her work primarily focuses on relief printmaking processes including collograph and monoprint.

Recently Kate’s practice has expanded to explore the process of collage, creating ‘Construction’, a body of work experimenting with quality of papers and relief, pulling elements from her misprints and deconstructing previous works.

Kate’s work is currently available to view in our Coffee House, pop in for a cosy drink and take a browse!☕️

🌟 Introducing Changemakers 🌟

This , we’re launching a brand-new way to get involved and help make a positive impact for people who access our vital work at The Art House.

The Art House is a SMALL charity, but we aim to make a BIG difference! As we enter our 30th year of breaking barriers, we’re launching an extremely special project, Changemakers.

This initiative is about welcoming supporters of all levels to create real change together.

Why? Our work truly matters, but it depends on the generosity of our advocates and committed individuals for it to remain ongoing.

Our History

The Art House was established in 1994 by a group of artists with a vision to provide fully-accessible studio space. In the period 1994 – 2004, a small group of artists and arts professionals worked to secure funding for arts projects, training events and artists’ residencies across Yorkshire and the Midlands.

Construction began in February 2007 on a new building in Wakefield, which included artists’ studios, accommodation, meeting rooms, community spaces and an office for The Art House team. In 2008, The Art House opened, with studios occupied by a diverse range of artists. The new Art House buiding was exemplary in terms of accessibility.

"The Art House’s mission continues to respond to the lack of facilities available to disabled artists... the diversity remit of the organisation is extended through new activity that will see them throw national focus on challenging conventional approaches to diversity and the arts." (The Arts Council, July 2014)
