Full Moon 27th December: The Cold Moon
Peak illumination 00.33am
The Cold Moon illuminates the night sky, marking both the first full moon after the winter solstice and the final full moon of the year. Named by the Mohawk people, it signals the onset of winter's chill.
The Cold Moon carries various names across different cultures. The Old English referred to it as The Cold Moon or the Long Night Moon, while the Celts knew it as the Oak Moon or the Full Cold Moon. Other names include Winter Maker Moon, Snow Moon, and Moon When the Deer Shed Their Antlers, symbolizing the season of renewal for deer species. In Chinese tradition, it is called the Bitter Moon.
Take a moment to appreciate the ethereal beauty of the Cold Moon. In the quiet of the night, reflect on the past year, and embrace the approaching new year with gratitude.

Boxing Day. Why is it called that?

Boxing Day is also referred to as St Stephen's Day. It traces back to St Stephen , who introduced donation boxes in churches for the welfare of the poor.
During Queen Victoria's reign, Boxing Day transformed into a day when the affluent would box up gifts for those in need; it also marked a day of respite for servants, who would receive a boxing day box from their employers as a token of appreciation.
In various European countries and Ireland, Boxing Day is commonly known as St Stephen's Day.
