Catering...

This can be a tricky one especially where food storage is concerned. The main issue is Cling film - great for covering the tops of dishes, wrapping food items to go in the fridge its actually super useful,.. yet zero environmentally friendly not only is it plastic its also single use.

✔️For at home catering and wrapping up your sandwiches try beeswax wraps. - Made from cotton and beeswax they can be washed and used again and again. You can usually find them locally or online, they come in all shapes, sizes and colours.

✔️Silicone lids are also great, as they can be stretched over dishes and jars a bit like the wraps.

✔️Like any plastic polymer, silicones are synthetic and include a mix of chemical additives., but they can be reused.

✔️There is an Eco Cling Film out there made by 'Willows Choice'. This BPA clingfilm is made from sugarcane and is Recyclable and reusable.

Share you thoughts on sustainable catering below.

Day 9 of my 10 days of plastic free top tips for your events.

Today we're talking weddings, and specifically confetti. The majority of venues and churches do now request biodegradable confetti. But its worth understanding a few facts about the potential impact of confetti both biodegradable and non biodegradable.

✔️ Real petals or dried flowers are the most biodegradable of all confetti and would be the preference.

✔️ Paper is biodegradable but its coloured dyes could seep into the ground and cause harm to wildlife like birds who eat it.

✔️ Plastic shiny confetti which looks metallic, this is a lot more durable and cheaper but it is not biodegradable could get ground into the soil, releasing toxins when wet and also harmful if eaten by animals.

✔️ what about the 'confetti' used on tables I'd love to know your suggestions for alternatives to make the table look pretty.

Day 8 of my 10 days of plastic free top tips for your Events.

Ah party bags... every kids dream, every parents nightmare. Always feels like an unnecessary expense but unfortunately kids have come to expect something at the end of a party!

✔️My suggestion would be, ditch the plastic tat, the items that kids look at for all of 5 seconds and then discard or break! Go for something more interactive or useful. It still needs to be fun though.

✔️One year I chose mini lunch boxes for my sons gift 'bag' yes it is still plastic but it can be reused and worked as a good holder for a slice of birthday cake.

✔️What about something you can do - like seeds or a mini plant that you can take home. Cake kits or other crafty things are also a good option.

✔️Books work really well, and you don't need to put them in anything just hand them out with a piece of cake.

Day 7 of my 10 days of plastic free top tips for your events..

Balloons.

👉There are lots of alternatives to using balloons in the first place, paper pom poms look great, materials kites or bunting or go natural and use plants to dress a space.

👉If you do really want balloons consider an eco alternative made of latex which is a natural product harvested from the rubber tree. It is also biodegradable. Do check though with the supplier that the latex is not mixed with plastic which some unfortunately are.

👉Make sure they are not attached to a plastic ribbon and not released into the air, where they can float up to 2km away and end up as litter.

👉 What are your thoughts on balloons? Please share your thoughts and comments below... 👇

Day 6 of my 10 days of Plastic Free top tips for your events.

Packaging...

👉Particularly important at the moment where online events are still very much an important part of the events industry and attendees often receive a 'corporate gift' in the post.

👉Check when you place an order if the company uses a sustainable packaging material such as wood wool, or loose chips.

👉Loose chips or EcoFlo chips are made from a maize based starch and are 100% biodegradable and Compostable and can be used as cushioning

👉Wood wool is made from shredded timber, natural and fully biodegradable. Check out woodwooluk for more information.

Simple.. yet effective.

Day 5 of my 10 days of plastic free tips for your events.

👉Thank your staff, suppliers, and attendees for bringing their own reusable coffee cup to your event.

👉Can your caterers offer a discount to those who have their own cup.

👉Branded reusable coffee cups are a great gift to give to employees to encourage them to use them, and a good branding opportunity. - go for a coffee cup that is produced from a sustainable material, and if you're sending in the post make sure its not wrapped in plastic bubble wrap!

👉do you carry a coffee cup?

Day 4 of my 10 days of plastic free top tips for your events.

Today is Overlay Day. By this I mean banners, signage, scrim, flags,..

👉We did talk about LED signage yesterday. But it is worth looking at this for outdoor events, especially for large stadiums/ venues where LED signage is likely to be more visible and can be easily updated

👉Look at alternative materials for boards such as the recyclable Plastic board supplied by the made from paper.

👉 produce an Eco Mesh banner which is PVC free and 100% recyclable. It is made from PET which is a type of plastic but is less harmful than PVC and can be recycled.

👉I'd love to know your top tips and experience of signage and banners at events. please share in the comments below...

Day 3 of the 10 days of plastic free top tips for your events.

Today I'd like to talk about the use of Technology at events. How can we use tech to reduce our need for plastic?

👉LED screens & Digital Signage are great ways to showcase your business at an exhibition without the need for a disposable banner or exhibition stand. Yes its more expensive but its also reusable and can be customised to display whatever you want - no out of date logos or messaging ever again.

👉Digital business cards - I know most business cards are made of cardboard/ paper but its good to know that there is an alternative to printing. I have recently discovered digital business cards.

👉I use HiHello which is an app on your phone. You can use it with a QR code or input someones email address when exchanging 'cards' with someone. It can also be kept up to date easily without having to re-print your business cards when your email address or phone number changes.

where have you used Technology at events. Share your thoughts and tips below..

Day 2 of my 10 days of plastic free top tips: 👇

Delegate Badges

👉Do we need badges? what do you think?
many high end hotels are now moving away from name badges allowing the staff member to introduce themselves and build the relationship with their customers.

👉If you do provide badges consider printing on demand/ on site to reduce the amount of waste for any no shows.

👉Consider lanyards made from bamboo, and badges that are made from paper. Have a look at for their eco range.

Would love to get your thoughts on badges. Comment below 👇

Do you use them or need them?
what do you use?

Day 1: Refill Refill Refill

👉Provide refill points at your event for attendees to fill their water bottles

👉Thank staff, suppliers and attendees for bringing their own reusable bottle, a thank you rather than a demand or instruction helps people feel good

👉Do you carry a water bottle❓ what are your challenges on refilling your bottle or asking people to bring theirs❓

Happy

What can we do in the Events Industry to be reduce our carbon emissions.

Top Tips: 💡

👉 Can you find a venue that provides accommodation and an event space, to reduce your attendees travel.

👉Consider a shuttle bus service for attendees instead of individual taxis from the hotel or train station to your event.

👉Plan your deliveries carefully. Choose delivery times that are outside of peak travel times to avoid delivery drivers sitting in traffic.

👉Promote public transport - consider schemes like https://liftshare.com/uk especially good for something like festival travel.
