This week, I attended an absolutely fascinating event! 🧡
Preparing for the Unexpected: Conversations on Life and Legacy with Nigel Hughes, Matthew Hutton DL and Bill Thompson was introduced by Rachel Sloane. The event was held in aid of St Elizabeth Hospice 🧡
The evening started with Nigel telling us about his latest book and why he decided to write and publish it. The book is called ‘Cancer Patience: Hope and healing through nature (ISBN 9781068628702)’. It is a warts and all, incredibly intimate account of Nigel’s experience in dealing with a cancer diagnosis. As a huge advocate of the physical, mental and spiritual benefits that the natural world can offer, Nigel took charge of his own treatment plan alongside his medical team and used nature to help guide his journey. The book ends with an extremely helpful 5-step toolbox and all proceeds are going to charity. 🧡
Following Nigel, we heard from Matthew. His book ‘Your Last Gift: Getting your affairs in order (ISBN 9780955954573)’, His book includes practical, step-by-step resources aimed at helping you prepare for life's one certainty. The downloadable forms cover an extensive checklist, the whereabouts of important documents, people to contact, a list of possessions and things to know about your home. This incredibly useful book encourages realism not morbidity and should be seen as part of living life to the full. 🧡
Before the final Q&A and discussion, Bill explained the role of Compassionate Companions and the ReSPECT form (Recommended Summary Plan for Emergency Care and Treatment). Compassionate Companions are a free NHS service available to all patients registered with GPs across Ipswich and East Suffolk. Trained volunteers are dedicated to enabling end-of-life conversations and preparation through volunteer-driven support, ensuring individuals and their families understand the choices available, with the time, compassion and dignity we all deserve.
