The Northern Flower Garden

The Northern Flower Garden Hi! I'm Debbie, a fully qualified florist based in Sunderland, providing seasonal Flower and Wreath Workshops around the North East 💚 Debbie x

My name is Debbie and I am the florist behind The Northern Flower Garden. I offer a variety of flower and wreath workshops throughout the year which I design to be accessible by all but also as an opportunity for you to build your knowledge and skills around floristry. I am passionate about sustainable floristry and always excited to develop and share new techniques which are kinder to our planet. Follow me to find out about my workshops and all things floral.

🌾 Here we are, creeping through September and Harvest is on the way. It’s a fundamental part of our seasonal calendar so I thought it would be worth talking about what it means.

Traditionally, Harvest is the time of year when farmers gather their crops after months of growing. It is a season of celebration, gratitude, and community and we mark this with Harvest Festivals. We will all remember these from our school days where we would share the abundance of food with others.🍎

Personally, Harvest is also about noticing nature at her most generous. Hedgerows are full of berries and our gardens are rich with warm autumnal colours, which feel comforting as our summer fades. 🍂

In floristry, Harvest inspires us to create designs that reflect all of the above. Arrangements that are full of food, texture, colour and abundance – think dahlias, sunflowers, berries, grasses, autumn leaves and even fruits from the orchard. 🧡

Over the next few weeks I’ll be sharing more about what Harvest means to me as a florist, and how we’ll be celebrating it together at my upcoming Autumn Workshops so keep an eye out, I’d love for you to come and celebrate the season with me! 👀

What does Harvest make you think of?

🍂 The changing colours?
🍂 The smells of autumn?
🍂 Or maybe a favourite seasonal tradition?

💬 I’d love to know!

Hello everyone!

We have been a bit quiet on the old platforms over summer, taking a bit of time out with family.

I hope you have all had a super summer and I am bringing it back with my chosen flower for September... the Gladioli 🧡❤️

Tall, striking, and wonderfully dramatic – they’re a flower that really makes a statement with their bold colours and elegant stems 🎨

It’s no wonder they’ve long been associated with strength, integrity, and remembrance.

For me, they bring a sense of late-summer abundance and a lot of personality! 😄

💬 I’d love to know — what’s your favourite September flower?
Do you love Gladioli, or are they a “too bold” bloom for you?

👇 Pop your thoughts in the comments, I always love hearing your favourites!

I had lovely afternoon wandering around Crook Hall Gardens National Trust the other week.

The gardens were absolutely brimming with colour, full of summer blooms and absolutely beautiful. Here's a few of my favourites... 😍

It’s such a lovely trip out, whether you’re a flower lover like me, or simply looking for somewhere special to wander, relax, and soak up the season. 🌞

There’s plenty to see and do, and it’s a place I’d really recommend if you’ve not been before.

I always come away from Crook Hall Gardens with a head full of inspiration (and a camera roll full of petals!) 🤣

👉 Have you visited recently? What’s your favourite part of the gardens?

😃 Hello everyone – I’m back!

I’ve just returned from a fabulous holiday in Malta 🇲🇹 — sunshine, sea, and plenty of inspiration! Feeling refreshed, recharged, and ready to get stuck into lots of flowery fun again. 💐

While chatting to a few ladies over the summer, a theme kept popping up… helping daughters (and sometimes sons!) with wedding flowers. It seems more and more people are keen to roll up their sleeves and get involved in creating those special blooms — and I love that!

Here's a design I created a few years ago for a lovely couple in Northumberland for a bit of inspiration 🩷

🤔 So, I’ve been thinking… how about a series of Wedding Flower Workshops?

Some ideas so far:
✨ Buttonholes & boutonnieres
✨ Flower girl baskets
✨ Fresh flower cake toppers

These would offer a relaxed, hands-on way to learn beautiful, achievable designs, perfect for adding a personal touch to a big day.

💬 I’d love to know — would this be of interest to you (or someone you know)? And is there anything else you’d like me to include?

Please get in touch to let me know 🙏

July's Flower of the Month: Alchemilla (Lady’s Mantle)

It might not be the fanciest flower in the garden, but I love working with Alchemilla at this time of year 💚

With its soft, frothy lime-green flowers and ruffled leaves, it brings a freshness and lightness to any bouquet and a zingy backdrop that works perfectly with the high summer sun 🌞

Often used as a filler flower, it’s one of those unsung heroes of floristry — adding softness, movement, and a splash of summer brightness. And, it pairs beautifully with just about everything!

📖 Its name comes from the Arabic word alkemelych meaning alchemy, thanks to its long association with herbal folklore and a little bit of plant magic.

💐 You are also very likely to find Alchemilla popping up in my summer workshops – it’s a joy to work with and always brings that ‘just gathered from the garden’ vibe that I love so much.

Are you a fan of this gentle garden classic?
Let me know what you love to pair it with!

🌞 Best Fresh Flowers for Warm Weather!

When the temperatures rise, not all flowers can take the heat. If you’re dressing your home, planning a wedding or event, or just want flowers that won’t wilt in a warm room, here are my top choices:

💥 Heat-Loving Heroes:

🔸Carnations – Long-lasting, frilly and available in endless shades. A florist’s summer staple!
🔸Sea Holly (Eryngium) – Striking, spiky texture and totally unfazed by warm conditions.
🔸Orchids – Especially cymbidiums and dendrobiums; they love warmth and stay elegant.
🔸Alstroemeria – Bright, cheerful and built to last, even in hot rooms.
🔸Zinnias – Sturdy summer favourites with amazing colours.
🔸Lisianthus – Surprisingly tolerant of heat, with delicate-looking but resilient petals.
🔸Statice – A great filler flower that keeps its shape and colour well.

If you love flowers and want to learn more tips like these, why not sign up to my email list to be notified straight away of my upcoming flower workshops👇
