A proud dad moment! Milly and I went to the Mall Galleries on Tuesday evening, a special trip on a School night for the international Pink Lady Food Photographer of the Year Awards, and she only managed to scoop second place in the under 12 category! The award was presented by food legend David Loftus, the man behind all of Jamie Oliver’s work. Her photo of her interpretation of wild garlic pesto and pasta (which she lives on!) looked amazing hanging in an art gallery in London, with her name next to it. Who knows what’s next!

I also a had a couple of wedding food images in the finalist exhibition, but that pales into insignificance with Milly’s achievement!

We also visited Charing Cross Station, where one of my landscape images can be seen in the toilets, (she had to see it for herself) which Milly found both impressive and hilarious in equal measure! Mostly the latter. You know you’ve made it as a photographer when your work is in hanging in public toilets! 😂

Some of my favourite weddings are those where close family and friends get away from it all in a wild setting, and the day just flows beautifully without any stresses or worries. The perfectly relaxed wedding of Kate and Tris last week at the gorgeous Woods at Oakley was this, and so much more. Without set events to follow, there is much more time to focus on capturing the real moments.

Excited to announce my first This is Reportage Story Award! As ever, it was incredibly difficult to pick up an Award: From almost 13,000 images submitted, judges for this round chose just 59 Reportage Awards and 31 Story Awards.

Story awards are so much harder to win, as it’s not just about one image, but a cohesive series of just 15-20 images that need to tell the wedding story, but also stand alone as strong images. This is Millie and Ollie’s story, on a sweltering June day in Dorset last year.

No poses; nothing staged: This is Reportage.

The last of my favourites from this epic wedding last year (I think?!) with these two gorgeous humans at Syon Park back in September, What a day though, these guys were on fire all day, so much happiness and energy, and the party was something else, with Anna’s brother, the immensely talented playing There She Goes as Anna walked down the aisle. I couldn’t find his version so the original will have to do, though Charlie’s was definitely better!

A few more of my favourites from this epic wedding last year, with these two gorgeous humans at Syon Park back in September, when it’s hard to remember just how hot it was, especially when you throw a glasshouse in to the mix…. What a day though, these guys were on fire all day, so much happiness and energy, and the party was something else, with Anna’s brother, the immensely talented closing off the night with a blistering set.

Exciting news today, I’ve managed to pick up two awards in the first round, that’s one less than I managed in the whole of last year!

Over 13,500 images were submitted across the Reportage Award and Story Awards around the world, with the judges for this round choosing just 50 Reportage Awards - so super hard to get an award, never mind two. these really are the hardest earned awards out there.

Now to keep the momentum going and capture as much more magic as possible this year!

Ever since I first saw the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights as they are more commonly known, I’ve been mesmerised by their magic, how the green light literally dances around the skies. To be able to capture this at a wedding though? That’s up there bucket list territory! So it was mind-blowing to get such an opportunity last weekend.

The sun will set every day, whereas aurora are incredibly unpredictable and hard to forecast, potentially visible less than 50% of the time even in the Arctic, at random times, and even then you still need clear skies. This fleeting glimpse of magic occurred just as everyone was leaving. As much as you plan, you have to go with the moment when it arrives.

Shooting the aurora is also incredibly difficult, needing to focus on both the subject and the stars, and with such low light, focus stacking is a necessity, requiring multiple exposures. There is no trickery here though, it’s just manually doing what your iPhone does in night mode without telling you.

And then there is the cold, it was -32C, and my flashes stopped working after just a few minutes exposure to the cold. So a balance of phone light painting and available light was needed. Capturing this was an absolute must, as best you can when you can’t even feel if your hands are still attached to your arms or not, chasing settings with mittens on wasn’t an option, so the gloves had to come off.

With all of this, the chances of success diminish rapidly. However, Natalia and Topi were a couple with absolute steely determination not to let a little frostbite ruin the opportunity, hats off to you both!

And a minute later, the dancing aurora had disappeared, as quickly as they arrived.

A wedding in a true winter wonderland, and there is nowhere quite so magical as Finnish Lapland, high above the arctic circle. With the sunrise merging into sunset just a few hours later, and a temperature of -32°C, this is one wedding I will never forget, the light was absolutely sublime, and the air sparkled with ice crystals. Congratulations to Naty and Topi, it was such a privilege to share your day, and I was impressed with your determination to dress for the occasion, despite the cold! And yes, incredibly we were blessed with the northern lights too, which I’ll save for another post!

Exciting news, I've made it as a finalist in Rangefinder Rising Stars 2024! The 30 Rising Stars list is the most prestigious award in the wedding photography industry. In the words of Lead Judge and Content Director for Rangefinder, Arlene Evans says, “These photographers represent the next exciting generation of storytellers bringing fresh and unique style to wedding photography. Their stories evoke emotion that resonates with the viewer. They also show technical proficiency and push the boundaries with their perspectives and post-processing skills. We are excited to showcase these photographers as 30 Rising Stars finalists!”

It is incredibly exciting to be named within the top 50 finalists from around the world this year, and I can’t wait to hear who will be named the top 30 when it's announced in March at WPPI in Las Vegas.

Hopefully this will be the year, but if not, I’m incredibly proud of what I do, and to be even in the final 50 amongst some truly incredible photographers is an huge honour

A special thank you to everyone who has supported me in this journey, and to my couples for trusting me with such a vital role, and for believing in my vision. Now back to work, and off to hopefully capture one of my bucket list wedding photos this weekend!

All this stormy weather has reminded me of Hannah and Tom’s wedding at Polhawn Fort in November, during storm Ciaran, and how the thick walls of the fort made it peaceful inside, almost oblivious to the storm, until you ventured out of course! We did however get a 10 minute window with some golden light, and we weren’t going to miss that opportunity!

The perfect way to way to round off an amazing 2023, even though there are still 3 weddings to go!

I’m incredibly pleased receive another award...and with that that I’ve also made This is Reportage’s ‘Top 100 Photographers in the World’ list for 2023 at #59!

This is Reportage showcases the best documentary wedding photography and documentary wedding photographers from around the world.
It’s always incredibly difficult to pick up a award. From almost 12,300 images submitted for this round, the judges chose just 62 Reportage Awards. It’ a real honour, and shows just how important seeking and documenting authentic wedding moments is to me. It’s also amazing to see so many other good friends in the list, many of whom have supported me through the years!

Now on to the last 3 weddings, and to keep hunting those elusive moments!

👆And the results are in! 👆

Super chuffed to be Highly Commended again in The Wedding Industry Awards this year, kind of second place, but with so many amazing photographers in the region, many of whom are good friends and people who’s work I aspire to, I’ll take it. Huge congratulations to my good friend for taking the top spot!

I’d also like to say a massive thanks to all the couples who took the time to vote for me, and for entrusting me with your memories, it means a lot. The awards are a benchmark for seeing how I’m doing each year, so to know I’m on the right path is a huge boost, but of course I’ll be gunning for that top spot next year!

Amy and Stew in another 10 frames (because I love the portrait orientation too!) from their gorgeous wedding at Burley Manor in the New Forest last week. There were cosy log fires, deer - both inside and the wild ones outside, incredible autumn light, and beautiful autumnal colours all around. I think this is my favourite time of the year!

Lovely to meet the team from Ambience, Petals and Posies, Rosie and her cake, Gemma’s amazing hair and make up, all of whom made the day just perfect, not forgetting the ever dependable Harry’s Wedding films who it’s always a pleasure to shoot with.

Whoop whoop! I’m only a Regional Finalist in The Wedding Industry Awards once again!

As the season quietens down I always have time to reflect on the amazing people I have worked with through the year, and the experiences we’ve shared at some fantastic weddings, from the smallest and cosiest ones, to the full on big party ones (you know who you are!). It’s been a real honour and privilege to capture so many memories, which I treasure as much as the people I shoot them for, which is why I absolutely love what I do.

A massive thank you to everyone who voted for me, I I really appreciate it! Fingers crossed for the announcement in November, I’m up against some superb competition, many of whom are good friends and whose work I really love. I was highly commended last time I entered, so let’s hope I can go one better this time!

Really chuffed to have picked up 4 documentary wedding awards in the latest round of the Wedding Photojournalist Association awards! From snoozing and hula hooping, huskies stealing sandwiches,
A fiancée saving Jenga blushes and the bride hitting one for six over the marquee, I think my favourite thing about weddings is that there is no way of know want is going to happen on any particular day, you’ve just got to be on the hunt for moments all the time, and constantly wondering, could this moment develop into something?

“Your story, beautifully told”

Hi, I’m Robin, a photographic storyteller based in Dorset, England, covering weddings wherever your heart takes you.

You write the script for your day, and I carefully and quietly observe and capture every moment, every detail, to tell your story exactly as you remember it. Moments matter.

I love beautiful light, it is like a magnet to me, and will always seek the best opportunities to capture you at your natural best on what is the most momentous day of your life.

I’d love to hear about your plans, and tell your story!
