It was an absolute pleasure to help Nicky and James flower their wedding this weekend. I am sure will have captured some beautiful shots… but for now here are a few quick snaps! Nicky and James had grown 100s of their own sunflowers for the wedding which were the inspiration for these high summer festival style flowers for the Tipi set in a magical woodland garden. Congratulations Nicky and James 💕🌸💕 ******erwedding

Not the most beautiful photo to put on an Instagram grid… but sharing this as it makes me smile… That old green ceramic pot is my Grandma’s (and is really heavy = good for cutting tall Gladioli into!) … the Buddleja flowers are cut from a plant I relocated from her garden, and it is one of her Agapanthus flowering in the background…. She may not be physically with us any more… but her flowers live on!

Just a glimpse of the gorgeous brief I had this weekend…. relaxed, natural, garden gathered flowers to decorate a barn for a wedding to allow family and friends to celebrate together… no specific colour scheme so and I could select the best of the flowers and foliage … highlighting the best of the August flowers… the bridal bouquet had a lovely scent with roses, jasmine, mint… beautiful colours with the dahlias, scabious, astrantia, cosmos, agapanthus (of course!) and movement with the grasses… absolute joy to create and flower this wedding! Have a wonderful marriage R&S 💕

Sustainable Farewell Flowers…

Before I started my floristry training I never thought about how floral designs were actually created, just whether they were pretty or not!

I’ve since learnt that most of the traditional designs we see (particularly for funerals) are all made using floral foam. This foam is actually a type of plastic made from reacting phenol and formaldehyde. This means it isn’t biodegradable and so is another single use plastic that just ends up in landfill. As florists have to soak the foam before use, fragments break off resulting in microplastics entering our waterways… we all remember the awful scenes of the oceans filmed in Blue Planet with marine life ingesting microplastics.

Sustainability is a minefield and can be so overwhelming. I am a long, long way from being fully sustainable but I believe that if we can all make a few small changes then it results in one big change for the planet. One of those changes I have made is not using any floral foam in my floral design. These floral tributes are made using moss, bound together with twine. The moss is sustainability sourced from woodland floor in Norfolk. The flowers are all grown less than 10 miles from me by the fab . This means no air miles and all of the design will break down with the natural composting process. The flowers will return to feed the soil in their final resting place in nature’s circle of life.

Tips for growing cut flowers in a fairly small space…

🌸 Dense planting - I ignore what the seed packet says and plant as close together as I feel I can get away with. This also helps me get longer stems for cutting as the plants naturally fight to grow upwards to the light.

🌼 Look after the soil - look after your soil and the plants will look after themselves! I mulch my beds heavily every Autumn to put the goodness back in that my plants need to grow strong and healthy. This also helps keep the weeds manageable. Have a search for ‘No dig gardening’ for more info.

🌸 Plant in layers - this patch has already had bulbs harvested from it… perennial plants in it, biennials planted, gladioli growing up through the biennials and I will plant later flowering annuals in here once the biennials finish. ******eruk ******er

Peonies …. the divas of the cut flower garden in June!

From a cut flower growers’ perspective they don’t make much sense… they only flower once a year, for about 2 weeks, usually around June. They have to be in the ground a whole three years before you can start to harvest them. If you cut them too early the buds can stay like a tight bullet and not open out… cut them too late and they will ‘blow’ and have a really short vase life.

But, they are totally worth it… the scent, colour, size and ruffles make me smile and stick my nose right into the flower every time I use one in a bouquet.

If you fancy making the most of the short, but oh so sweet season of the peony I am now taking orders for flower deliveries on Saturday 26th June… all British, mostly locally grown by myself and the fab … pop into the website for more details!

Seeing as it is coming to the end of , it is the perfect time to show some photos from an amazing day I had a little while ago with Sarah and Will .

Sarah and Will only use British flowers and sustainable mechanics from their most beautiful studio in Hook, Hampshire.

I had the best day, chatting all things British flowers and creating abundant bridal bouquets and buttonholes.

Thank you Sarah and Will for being so kind, supportive and encouraging! ******erwedding ******erflorist

It is nearly a week since the lovely Nicky and James got married officially… with the bigger party to come in the summer. Nicky asked for a palate of white and green, so as it was June her bouquet was filled with peonies which smelt divine! Supporting flowers came from with that beautiful white malope, nigella and Sweet William. Fabulous photography by (thank you for sharing Sam!) with the final flourish in the bouquet and buttonhole provided by beautiful silk ribbon! ******erwedding ******erweddingphotographer ******erflorist

14/06/2021

By working with nature rather than against her, flower and foliage choices are dictated by the season… not by Instagram, Pinterest, or what Aunt Mildred says you should have on your wedding day.

This may sound restrictive but by working with flower farmers and florists who understand how flowers naturally grow you can still create a similar look as a bouquet you have seen on Pinterest…but it will be totally unique to you. It will contain the flowers and foliage that are looking at their very best, on that day, in that year. Even the same date the following year will have different flowers reaching their peak.

Now personally (I know I am biased!) but I think that is rather lovely. For brides now, the sweet peas are hitting their stride… a hugely nostalgic scent… and by using these seasonal flowers in a bride’s bouquet every May to June for the next 50 years she can be transported back to her wedding day with the scent of a sweet pea!

So this bouquet may have initially been inspired by a rose or a peony as the focal flower… but with the cool spring delaying the season by about a month… I used a gorgeous ranunculus…. The bouquet isn’t any less for this… it reflects the exact day of this year… just like your wedding day… and I think that is rather magical!

It is British Flowers Week! Celebrate our beautiful British blooms this week with me, and learn a bit more about my decisions to focus on British flowers as a florist (as well as a gardener, flower grower and nature lover!)

Flowers grown by and myself (as well as a cheeky bottle of champers) welcomed the new owners on board the stunning Fjord 44 Coupé  this weekend.

British Flowers …. All locally grown…. By me and the ladies … Scented, sustainable and full of life and personality!

It is coming up to British Flowers week, a campaign by New Covent Garden Flower Market to promote and support the British Flower Growing Industry. Pop on to their website to look at all the fun events happening … and look out for windows being festooned with flowers in your local area.

Good time to also mention that Flowers from the Farm have a fabulous brand new Website. I am a proud member of this organisation, and again there are lots of resources on there to find out more about British Flowers.

If you want to send flowers to a loved one in another part of the country, please do use the website to find a local grower to them! ******er ******erindependents ******ersmallbusiness
