It's been a brilliant year at HW and we're taking some time off over Xmas to prepare for 2025! We'll be closed from 23 Dec and will re-open on 3 Jan. See you all in the new year 😁

In the summer a few of the HW team attended a talk at Jane Austen's house, Chawton, about how underwear creates the right silhouette for clothing to be worn over the top. Without the right shaping, clothing just doesn't look right. (I couldn't resist buying the book)
With this in mind, new volunteer Catlenn is creating Regency short stays for our customers to wear. We're going to need quite a few of these as we'll be exhibiting several of our costumes in events next summer. I've tried on the stays, and I must say they are far more comfortable and supportive than a modern bra!
Fun fact: underpants/knickers were not a thing during the Regency period. Men wore long shirts which they tucked into their breeches. Women wore layers of petticoats. Going commando is not a new thing 🤣

We're getting ready for Jane Austen's birthday next year - our volunteers have been making beautiful waistcoats using a pattern taken from an original garment. We can't wait to show you what else we're working on

As we head into autumn our looks a bit different - we avoid the tumble drier, allowing the costumes to dry on a rail indoors! Still not your normal wash load 🤣

It's a white this week! Look closely and you'll notice we don't just have standard white shirts - these are Regency shirts. Did you know that men didn't wear underwear in the Regency Period? Their shirts were much longer and tucked between the legs!!

Another handwash item for our at Hampshire Wardrobe. This beautiful beaded number was recently donated to us, and although it's a more recent piece, with some shoulder pads added, it will work well for a 1980s glamourous look 😍

We're getting creative at HW. Inspired by the latest season of and in preparation for next year's Jane Austen festivities we're creating new pieces for our collection. Sometimes we start with the fabrics and trimmings as inspiration, draping these on a mannequin until we're happy with the design. Alex particularly loves Regency fashion so she's very happy at the moment 🥰
