Combine Rollin!
Being surrounded by arable farmland we get to see the seasons pass, fields planted and harvested.
The wheat across was harvested yesterday, in a race with mother nature and the rain forecast for this morning.
Fascinating watching the Combine munch it's way through the standing crop, saving the grain and blasting out the debris.
Then the grain is transferred from the hopper at the top of the Combine harvester through the long arm into the trailer of the waiting tractor.

When you use you field for a business you need to look after the grass. The warm wet weather is great for growing grass but takes ages with a normal lawn mower!
I used the ride on garden mower to start with but luckily we now have Doris our tractor. She is like our purple Barbie with all her accessories.
Dave was in charge of topping the grass as I am not trusted to mow a straight line! Too busy watching the kites, bussards and many other things that draw my attention and where my eyes go, so does the tractor! My defense is that there are no straight lines in nature...

Learning the ancient art/skill of hedge laying. Trunks are cut at base and laid over but still attached at the base. This makes the hedge thicker on a horizontal level and new growth is vertical. Helps keep animals in and creates a thicker habitat for wildlife.

I have been learning the ancient art and skill of hedge laying. We have mainly hawthorn hedges surrounding the Field and 2 years ago i planted a native hedge which included guilder rose, Hazel, field maple and hawthorn. When the hedge plants are thick enough they are cut at the base and laid over, always up hill so the gap can rise. This thickens the hedge from the bottom and new shoots grow vertically. The thicker hedge becomes a better wind break and livestock barrier.
So pleased to see the newly laid hedge sprouting!

A lovely grassy well mown field just right to have you wedding on doesn't just happen!
Before our first mow of the season the grass is harrowed to loosen up the dead grass, then we use a paddock sweeper to collect all the loose grass. We then roll the field, this roller has been in the family since before I was born!
The rolling of the grass will promote growth.
After about 10 days we will then do the first topping or mowing of the summer, ready for our first event in May.
You can tell my husband Dave is driving the tractor by the straight lines! I get distracted by the view, a visiting Kite or Buzzard flying over and the lines go a bit wonky!

Field with a View Wi******er

In the summer of 2016 my husband Dave and I had our wedding party in our hay field over looking the lovely city of Wi******er and the South Downs National Park.

We decided on a low budget DIY affair with tents and marquees borrowed from friends and family; we supplied kegs of beer and cider. Filled a couple of baths with ice for the wine and soft drinks. On our invites we asked everyone to bring their favourite pudding and a bottle to add to the bar. We put out games for everyone to enjoy- table tennis, swingball, outdoor jenga and skittles.

As we had gotten married at the Registry Office on the Monday- Summer Solstice- our party on the Saturday was a Celebration Party, not the actual wedding, so our amazing local band who we hired in for the evening, charged us for a 'party' not a 'wedding' , which would have cost a lot more!

We had such an amazing time and so many people commented on what a fab place it was for the party we have decided to share our field so that others can also have their special party or gathering there too.
