I’ve come home from a fantastic family holiday to a tunnel full of the most beautiful lemony, white and peachy pink poppies with a scrumptious scent. Probably the best ever, but don’t I always say that?

Narcissi…

So many of these are still really short, in bud, coming up blind, or being eaten by slugs. I suspect the bulbs have been weakened by successive drought (think the summer of 22), and flooding (think pretty much continuous since Autumn!).
We garden on heavy clay and the loss of bulbs is a serious consideration as we move towards more erratic weather patterns associated with climate change.
Most of my bulbs are dotted through woodland and dappled grassy areas. Usually they would multiply and bulk up over successive years, but I’m thinking I may need to rethink this. Is anyone else having a poor year with their narcissi?

March flowers…

Although admittedly not this season. We’re still wading through mud, squelching through borders and picking up the pieces from the wettest winter since records began.
However, there will be flowers! We’re still here and still growing. Lots to look forward to as the new season brings us narcissi, blossom, hellebores and fresh beginnings.

Hanging on to September by the skin of my teeth and the froth of the cosmos - which is on it’s last legs. Just like most of us growers. Time to slow down and accept the changing rhythms of nature. Personally, I have no problem with going to bed early with the rest of the natural world. There’s just a final push to get next years flowers into the earth before we give in and go to ground.

A final flurry of summertime floweriness before the impending Hurricane Agnes…I still have some work to do before she hits Suffolk so I’m secretly hoping she’ll be all mouth, and no trousers!
What a season it’s been! What a year! In the eternal words and wisdom of our late, great Queen;
2023 “is not a year on which I shall look back with undiluted pleasure!”

Late summer lemons 🍋

Sometimes life can hurl them at you repeatedly and it’s not always easy to make lemonade by yourself. On the other hand there’s always a bunch of flowers to cheer your days and to gift to someone you love, admire, respect or simply want to bring joy. I love my job.

Pink, orange and green and a gorgeously sunny day…I’m loving this colour combination, set against the lusciously verdant, Physocarpus foliage.

These single flowered cosmos were self down and are towering over the fussy doubles and fancy varieties. I have to say I love them all, but these are killer!

A pinky pop of echinacea and we’re all set…

I’ve recently sown a whole new batch of these beautiful flowers, in all sorts of shapes and colours. They don’t love my heavy soil, but with amendments and care I can keep them flourishing. There are always a few plants that we have to work that little bit harder to maintain but I love their cheery faces and the pollinators go crazy for them. In a garden setting they are stunning in drifts through the middle of a border, and love to bake in the sunshine. A bit like me. Shame about that this summer…!

Obviously I mean the baking in the sun bit. Not the looking stunning in the border bit!

Twenty years today since I married my husband…I did my own church flowers with the help of my mum and my mum-in-law, but don’t have a single photo that is digitised on my phone (these are not them!)…My husbands mum Vera, grew some beautiful petunias around the edge of their terrace where we drank champagne after the service, but the rabbits had managed to eat them all the night before! It didn’t matter as their garden was stunning and a labour of love over many years…Must try to dig out some photos of it to share on here

There’s isn’t much more lovely than a cloud of softly ruffled cosmos on a sunny afternoon in August. And what’s even nicer is that these could still be flowering in November if we play the weather cards right. Such workhorses for flower growers and admirers alike.
