Godfrey Sheppard by Terry Seabrook
It is with great sadness that I am must tell you about the passing of Godfrey Sheppard 2 weeks ago. Godfrey (also known as Grog and God ) was a great jazz double bass player and performed in the Southern region from a very young age until months before his passing at the age of 80.
Godfrey was one of the first musicians I played with when I came to Brighton. While I was living at the famous Hartington Road Jazz hub he came over from his Lancing home regularly to rehearse with me and another close friend, drummer Richard Johnson. We only played in public as a trio a few times but I went on to play with Godfrey regularly from then on in many groups and combinations.
Godfrey himself played in a trio with the soon to be world famous keyboard player Keith Emerson who also came from Worthing. They recorded an album in 1963 and you can hear a track (You Say You Care) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KQ-YxxcwTEw
It features Grog playing the double bass and there is a glowing comment from Keith Emerson:
"This was something Godfrey and I heard on the John Coltrane album Soultrane. Paul Chambers (bass) was one of Godfrey's inspirational heroes and at such a young age he bowed and plucked like him and I was more than happy to follow him" - Keith Emerson
That’s really nice isn’t it, and you can hear how much Keith came from a jazz starting point. No doubt Godfrey gave him some inspiration there; so much music history that goes under the radar.
Godfrey was also involved at the start of the Jazz at The Hare and Hounds which he set up nearly 30 years ago with his friends: guitarist John Greenwood and saxophonist Jeff Daley. He was still playing there until summer 2023 before he retired to a care home in Shoreham. You can read a historical article (which Godfrey contributed to) about Jazz at The Hare and Hounds from the Sussex Jazz Magazine: https://www.sussexjazzmag.com/20-years-of-jazz-at-the-hare-hounds-worthing/
Godfrey was also a master double bass maker and was the first port of call for all local bass players when repairs and renovations were required. (See picture of God in his workshop).
Godfrey also played at summer seasons accompanying celebrities such as Max Bygraves, Lulu and Cilla Black.
The Funeral service is on Tuesday, 16th April at 2pm at the Church of St Mary the Virgin, Church Lane, Sompting, Lancing, West Sussex. BN15 0AZ - the Saxon one on the hill. He is being buried in his parent's plot in the churchyard followed by a wake in Lancing. Friends welcome.
There will also be a tribute evening specially dedicated to Godfrey where musician friends are invited to join in playing and all friends and fans are invited to come along. This will be at The Hare and Hounds, 79-81 Portland Rd, Worthing BN11 1QG on a regular jazz night on Tuesday 7th May 8pm -10.30pm. A collection will be made and the proceeds will be donated to the Musicians Benevolent Fund.
We will miss you Godfrey and your great double bass playing.
