Happy Birthday to His Majesty King Charles III who celebrates his official birthday today!

In the light of His Majesty's love of oak trees we'd like to mark this special occasion by featuring this magnificent ancient oak at Kimberley Hall (photographed by Adrian Houston), which is included in the authoritative book 'Ancient Oaks in the English Landscape' by renowned botanist and author Aljos Farjon. Aljos is also honorary research associate at the Royal Botanic Gardens at Kew who consider Kimberley to be home to Norfolk's finest collection of ancient oaks; one of which the Veteran Tree Association has dated back to 1373!

We now have beautiful sturdy young saplings from these ancient trees and are very much looking forward to welcoming Aljos to Kimberley next week to see the mighty oaks again.

To wisdom, grace, strength and fortitude🥂

We look forward to welcoming and who are hosting 'Cars at Kimberley', a day of cars, music and food.

Today we'd like to commemorate the birthday of an unsung local hero Priscilla Buxton, born in 1808, whose remarkable efforts we highlighted last year on International Women's Day. Priscilla was co-secretary of the London Female Anti-slavery Society with fellow abolitionist Amelia Opie, and was the daughter of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton, known as the 'Liberator', chosen by William Wilberforce to head the campaign to abolish slavery after he retired. Sir TFB also worked to end the death penalty and suttee, the Hindu practice of women sacrificing themselves on their husband's funeral pyre and was the founding chairman of the RSPCA.

Although Priscilla worked for the anti-slavery society alongside her father, as a woman she was not allowed to join the society so could only hear him speak through a ventilation shaft. After the Slave Trade Act of 1807, the Anti-slavery Society was determined to bring an end to slavery itself. Priscilla's efforts with Amelia Opie were instrumental to the cause, bringing the first and largest petition against slavery to parliament in 1833 by women (187,000). She and Amelia were the first two signatories

Priscilla's maternal aunt, another local hero, was Elizabeth Fry (born Gurney) of Earlham Hall where Priscilla was born. Fry's reform of prisons is well known, which Sir TFB helped to fund, and she highlighted not only the plight of female prisoners but that of their children often incarcerated with them. Fry and Sir TFB both feature on the reverse of the old £5 note set in Newgate Gaol, and their work is commemorated by various monuments including this moving tribute to TFB in Sierra Leone.

The work of Priscilla, Amelia and other female anti-slavery activists is less well known; likewise the influential writings of Mary Prince, Olaudah Equiano,
and Ignatius Sancho describing their experiences of enslavement. Without the opportunity to vote they harnessed the power of the pen in their attempts to abolish slavery with a petition that despite its magnitude was mocked by Parliament. Priscilla died aged 44 but in her short life achieved so much. She married Andrew Johnston, a fellow abolitionist on 1st August 1834, a date chosen to coincide with the majority of slaves being freed in the British Empire. Amelia died aged 84, having published numerous books and collections of poetry.

Today we'd like to remember them and acknowledge their role in supporting the abolition of slavery. Listen to the insightful podcast 'Empire 67: Slavery's Demise' by William Dalrymple. Dr Alison Dow will also be giving a talk 'The Remarkable life of Thomas Fowell Buxton: the 'Liberator' this Thursday at the Forum in Norwich with another scheduled for 22nd June

💥 EXHIBITOR ALERT 💥

Kimberley Hall is one of the finest wedding venues in Norfolk, built in 1712, and a much-loved family home. Situated on the ‘hill at Downham’ in an Arcadian landscape designed in 1778 by Lancelot ‘Capability’ Brown, the house overlooks a substantial 15-acre lake and the River Tiffey valley.

The 18th-century rooms in the Hall and West Wing offer a combination of traditional grandeur with a unique, stylish entertainment space incorporating a contemporary bar area and a state of the art lighting system that can be adapted to complement your event. Kimberley has the flexibility to be whatever you want it to be; a blank canvas upon which to exercise your creative energy. The only limitation is your imagination.

Weddings are occasions when privacy really matters and there should be no compromise on style or aesthetics. The south front of the house provides a romantic, private and idyllic setting with its breathtaking view of the extensive parkland, lake and ancient oaks. The Music Room, where the wedding ceremony traditionally take place, is a light and elegant space with historic plaster work that connects onward to the garden via a beautiful spiral staircase capped by a coffered dome. The garden may be accessed additionally via a hexagonal room adjacent to the Music Room that links to the stylish West Wing entertainment space via a spacious curved colonnade and contemporary bar. Your ceremony may also take place as a Duo ceremony on the rear manicured lawn.
