Dear Mill Community,

As a family, we started Summer At The Mill as a ‘pop-up venue’ in our home village of Stillington during the pandemic. What began as a small initiative has grown over the past three years and we have taken great delight in providing an array of different events… music, comedy and theatre, foodie evenings and our Saturday café!

We wish to let you know that we’re now going to press pause. We’d like to explain why, and we’d also like to say a huge THANK YOU.

In order to carry on as a permanent food and entertainment venue, it is required of us to gain planning permission - to change the site from residential to business. We were granted a premises license in our first year, then started the full planning permission process 18 months ago, and we’ve been working with a consultant to help us navigate the best options. The process is lengthy and costly. It is all sensible stuff, and we have no objections at all to what is required. However, all of the surveys and infrastructure we’d need to implement amounts to thousands of pounds. So, as a family, we just need to have a careful think about the levels of investment we can realistically make at this stage.

For 2024 we will not be opening our Saturday Café, or programming evening theatre, music and foodie events. With this comes an amount of sadness, as we know how many people love spending time At The Mill. But we also carry a huge amount of pride and happiness with us. The Mill truly is our happy place. We have built the most wonderful team and we feel so incredibly grateful for everything that we have collectively achieved during the last three years.

The Mill continues to be a family home and an accommodation site. As a group of people, The Mill family and friends will continue to think up ways to create magic within our wonderful village and wider cultural community. Whilst we take stock, we’d like to say the biggest THANK YOU to all who’ve visited, all who’ve been involved, all who’ve supported and encouraged.

Dearest Mill Friends!

Just one month ago, we wrapped up our third-ever Summer At The Mill - an annual season of stellar entertainment, delicious food, and gorgeous reasons to come together. From our beautiful Saturday Café, to brilliant family and children's entertainment, to hilarious comedy, to moving theatre, to stunning music, to scrumptious supper clubs, to love-filled weddings, to special private events, we gathered in our Gardens across the Summer months in a series of fun, interesting, vibrant, vital, playful, and meaningful ways.

Thank you for visiting to soak up the arts and eat up the feasts. Thank you for following along on emails and on our website and here social media. Thank you for engaging, for showing interest and support, for turning up in all the ways you did to be a fabulous part of Summer At The Mill 2023. We absolutely adore our growing community At The Mill.

A huge thank you to all the artists, entertainers, and chefs who served up creative and culinary treats. Thank you to our local suppliers, whose produce and products graced our Café and Bar. And special thanks to our staff At The Mill; the lovely team who are now like an extended family to our core family! Incredible people who consistently brought their good vibes and hard work to everything we brought to you! Much love!

There'll be more news soon enough, but for now we simply wanted to say cheers and thank you for a bright and beautiful Summer 2023, and all the best to you as we waltz our way into Autumn and Winter!

Theatre At The Mill

John Hegley, the star of radio, T.V. and school assemblies, is ready once more to take to road and rail with a clutch of new verses, a few older favourites, and a cardboard camel with a moving jaw.

The biscuits in the show derive from a phrase used by Romantic Poet, John Keats: 'a scarcity of buiscuit' - not the sort of phrase nor spelling you expect from a romantic poet. The show delves into the more eccentric side of Keats, alongside everyday goings-on in the Hegley homes of now and yesteryear. It includes 7 drawings of elephants, myths, discos, daleks, optional community singing and the search for a sense of self-worth. Designed more for adults, but suitable for the odd nine-year-old.

The show won a 'Lustrum Award' at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2022, even though there were no biscuits.

Alligator Gumbo are an exciting 7-piece band playing jazz from the hey-day of the New Orleans swing/jazz era, in particular the "roaring 20s", when music was raw and largely improvised with melodies and solos happening simultaneously which has now become defined as the 'New Orleans' sound.

Performing extensively for over 10 years, Alligator Gumbo have made numerous appearances at prestigious international jazz festivals and clubs throughout the country, establishing themselves as firm favourites on the British jazz scene. The band continues to wow audiences far and wide with their good-natured mix of foot-stomping rhythms and toe-tapping tunes, and raucous singalongs! Guaranteed to be a show like no other and not to be missed!

Join Slapstick Picnic AT THE MILL for a theatrical treat like no other as they whip up a three-hander version of J M Barrie’s classic play: Peter Pan.

Let your imagination soar as they dish out this timeless tale of hapless pirates, feral children, and a particularly punctual reptile. This show isn’t just for kids; their brilliant buffoonery will have picnickers of all ages cackling into their coleslaw. This is one flight of fancy you don’t want to miss!

Celebrating silliness with another whistle-stop tour to outdoor venues around the UK, Slapstick Picnic returns with a spirited adaptation of J.M Barrie’s Peter Pan this summer. With just three actors swapping wigs, wings, and waistcoats to play all the parts, and told with Slapstick Picnic’s characteristic breakneck pace, this polished piece of buffoonery always seems just one step away from going completely overboard.

In 1992 Barrie generously gifted his copyright of Peter Pan to Great Ormond Street Hospital and in recognition of this, Slapstick Picnic will be donating a percentage of ticket sales to Great Ormond Street Hospital.

Our Café/Bar At The Mill will be up and running, with snacks, drinks and refreshments available for purchase. Due to a staffing shortage, we will not be serving pizzas, so please feel free to bring your own picnic to enjoy while watching the show! GARY STEWART’S FOLK CLUB series is a much-loved feature of our Summer At The Mill seasons, with this year proving even more so! The night runs in two halves: The first half is a traditional folk club, anyone can come and play and offer up a song, a tune, a poem, or a story - just turn up and let us know! The second half is a headline set by a guest artist and this time it is KITTY VR!

KITTY VR is a budding singer-songwriter and newly formed producer from York. Creating and performing her songs on electric guitar alongside her delicate vocals, with a sense of vulnerability and relatability.

Our Bar At The Mill will be up and running, alongside our wood-fired pizza oven, to accompany this event! Please arrive any time from 6:30pm for pizzas and drinks! We are a cashless venue; bring your card/phone for payment.
