King Willliam IV Hotel, York Castle Museum.
The King William Hotel stood in Walmgate until the 1960's when it was moved intact to York Castle Museum. The Irish National League was founded here and the hotel has always been painted green. The 18th century building was converted into a hotel c1840 and was fitted out with the latest system of lighting at that time - gas. Named after King William IV, by 1902 it had two attics, five bedrooms, two used by travellers, a sitting room and a spirit room upstairs. Below were a smoke room, a bar and private kitchen and a brass room in the yard. It closed in 1958 and the facade and interior were acquired by the Castle Museum who rebuilt them in Half Moon Court which opened in 1963.
The History
In the race against time and bulldozers, Mr R Patterson, the curator of York Castle Museum, remained undefeated. His secret? A keen eye for salvaging pieces of York's past before they vanished forever.
As the slums of York were cleared away, Patterson's mission was clear: rescue as much as possible for the Museum's reconstruction of a Victorian-Edwardian street. Picture him, swift and determined, swooping in just ahead of the bulldozer's path, snatching up fragments of history – a shop front here, a piece of decor there.
In the fast-paced world of urban redevelopment, being a savvy scavenger is essential. Take, for instance, this building. It's its fate was sealed. Patterson found himself an unlikely patron of its "spit and sawdust" bar, sipping on a half-pint of bitter while mentally cataloging treasures destined for preservation. It's a race against time, but with Patterson at the helm, York's rich heritage would remain in capable hands.
In reminiscing about his visit, Mr. Patterson vividly described a remarkable sight at the King William establishment: "I encountered the largest spittoon I've ever laid eyes on. It stretched across the entirety of the bar, resembling a trough, and was replenished daily with fresh sawdust."
