Craig Richards: "You don't get much bigger than Dmitry Bivol at my weight." The British light-heavyweight champion has revealed that he is set to receive a fight against Russia's WBA champion in Britain

Craig Richards says he can "break down" Dmitry Bivol after confirming that talks are "moving in the right direction" for a WBA light-heavyweight title fight in Britain.

The south Londoner has been selected as a potential challenger for Bivol, who is set to end a lengthy absence from the ring with a WBA title defence in April.

'Spider' Richards, ranked at No 8 by the WBA, welcomed the opportunity to test himself at the highest level after his explosive knockout win over Shakan Pitters in December.

Joseph Diaz Significantly Overweight For 130-Pound Title Defense Against Rakhimov

Joseph Diaz Jr. was congratulated by the emcee of Friday’s weigh-in for making weight for his 130-pound title defense against Shavkatdzhon Rakhimov on Saturday night.

The problem, of course, is that Diaz didn’t even come close to meeting his contractual obligation for what was supposed to be his first defense of the IBF junior lightweight title he won last year. Diaz (31-1, 15 KOs) stepped on the California State Athletic Commission’s scale at 133.6 pounds, roughly 3½ pounds above the junior lightweight limit.

The Downey, California, resident is not expected to attempt to weigh in again Friday, which would prevent him from having a chance to retain his title versus Rakhimov in the main event of DAZN’s five-fight stream from Fantasy Springs Resort Casino in Indio, California (8 p.m. EST; 5 p.m. PST). Tajikistan’s Rakhimov (15-0, 12 KOs), the mandatory challenger for Diaz’s IBF 130-pound crown, can win the title because he officially weighed 129.8 pounds.

The 28-year-old Diaz had hoped to make his first defense of the IBF junior lightweight title he won from Tevin Farmer a year ago in Miami. The left-handed Diaz defeated Philadelphia’s Farmer (30-5-1, 6 KOs, 1 NC) by unanimous decision in their 12-rounder last January 30 at Meridian at Island Gardens.

Farmer had an immediate rematch clause in his contract for that optional title defense. The time frame for that second Diaz-Farmer fight expired, however, which enabled Diaz to move forward with his mandated defense against Rakhimov.

The 26-year-old Rakhimov has not fought since he stopped South Africa’s Azinga Fuzile (14-1, 8 KOs) in the eighth round of their IBF elimination match in September 2019 in East London, South Africa.

Moments before Diaz and Rakhimov weighed in Friday, Patrick Teixeira and Brian Castano came in beneath the junior middleweight limit for their 12-round, 154-pound championship match.

Teixeira weighed in at 153.4 pounds, slightly less than Castano, who got on the scale at 153.8 pounds.

Argentina’s Castano (16-0-1, 12 KOs), the mandatory challenger for Teixeira’s title, is regularly listed as a 6-1 favorite over the defending champion. Teixeira (31-1, 22 KOs) will make the first defense of the WBO junior middleweight title he won by out-pointing Dominican contender Carlos Adames (18-1, 14 KOs) unanimously in November 2019 at The Cosmopolitan in Las Vegas.

Teixeira, 30, and Castano, 31, were supposed to fight April 25 at Fantasy Springs. That card was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The weights for the first three fights DAZN will stream Saturday night are listed below.

Ronny Rios (32-3, 16 KOs), Santa Ana, California, 121.4 pounds vs. Oscar Negrete (19-2-2, 7 KOs), Tierralta, Colombia, 121.6 pounds, 10 rounds, junior featherweights.

Shane Mosley Jr. (16-3, 9 KOs), Pomona, California, 161.6 pounds vs. Cristian Olivas (20-7, 17 KOs), Mexicali, Mexico, 161.6 pounds, 10 rounds, super middleweights.

Bektemir Melikuziev (6-0, 5 KOs), Shoimbek, Uzbekistan, 170.6 pounds vs. Morgan Fitch (19-4-1, 8 KOs), Pittsburgh, 170.8 pounds, 8 rounds, light heavyweights.

Richard Commey, Jackson Marinez weigh in, set for showdown Saturday

Richard Commey and Jackson Marinez weighed in today for their 10-round fight Saturday at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas (ESPN).

Commey, the former lightweight champion, came in at 136 pounds, Marinez at 135.5

Commey (29-3, 26 KOs) is coming off a second-round knockout loss to Teofimo Lopez in December 2019, a setback that cost him his 135-pound title.

Marinez (19-1, 7 KOs) last fought this past August, when he lost a disputed decision to lightweight contender Rolando Romero for a vacant “interim” title.

ESPN will television two other fights on the card. Adam Lopez (14-2, 6 KOs) will face Jason Sanchez (15-2, 8 KOs) in a 10-round featherweight bout. They both weighed 126, the division limit.

And Jared Anderson (7-0, 7 KOs) and Kingsley Ibeh (5-1-1, 4 KOs) weighed 249 and 276, respectively, for their six-round heavyweight bout.

Three more fights will be streamed on ESPN+. They are:

Jahi Tucker (2-0, 1 KO) (144 pounds) vs. Eric Rodriguez (1-1, 1 KO) (144.5), four rounds, welterweights; Eric Puente (4-0, 0 KOs) (137) vs. Sergio Vegas (2-0-1, 2 KOs) (136), four rounds lightweights; Troy Isley (debut) (157) vs. Bryant Costello (1-1, 1 KO) (158), four rounds middleweights; and Floyd Diaz (debut) (117) vs. Fernando Macias (1-1, 0 KOs) (118), four rounds, bantamweights.

Joe Smith vs. Maxim Vlasov is Off, Vlasov Positive For COVID-19

LAS VEGAS - Saturday's Top Rank on ESPN main event between Joe Smith Jr. and Maxim Vlasov — for the vacant WBO light heavyweight world title — has been postponed after Vlasov tested positive for COVID-19.

Vlasov said, "I am devastated with the postponement of my world title fight against Joe Smith Jr. I have been following strict protocols, I have done regular testing with negative results, and I have no symptoms. I am well prepared and had an excellent training camp. I look forward to the rescheduling of the fight and the opportunity to display my world class skills."

The Richard Commey-Jackson Marinez lightweight bout has been elevated to the main event and will headline the ESPN-televised tripleheader beginning at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT. In the new co-feature, action star Adam Lopez will defend his NABF featherweight belt in a 10-rounder against former world title challenger Jason Sanchez. The ESPN telecast will open with Toledo heavyweight sensation Jared Anderson (7-0, 7 KOs) against Kingsley Ibeh in a six-rounder.

Undercard bouts, including the professional debut of former U.S. amateur star Troy Isley, will stream live on ESPN+ at 8:15 p.m. ET/5:15 p.m. PT.

It’s On Boxing🥊🥊Aficionado, Wasiru 'Gyata Bi' Mohammed makes US debut against Mexican Florentino Perez Hernandez on April 10

Ghana’s World Boxing Organisation (WBO) number 8 ranked Wasiru 'Gyata Bi' Mohammed (12-0, 11 KOs) says he is ready for any fighter in the highly competitive junior featherweight division ahead of his proposed US debut against Florentino Perez Hernandez of Mexico (14-5-2, 9 KOs) on Showtime come April 10.

“I am not afraid of anyone at super bantamweight. I feel great fighting in that division and I am looking forward to challenging anyone who would stand my way.

That is the only way to become a world champion. You have to be ready to face any opponent in the ring if you really want to achieve that.”

He said he is ready to fight any of the world champions in WBC, WBA, IBF and the WBO,

Mr John Marfo, his manager has offered him the opportunity to work with Cameron Dunkin and D&D Boxing in the USA.

Mohammed gained valuable experience on the national amateur team before turning professional in April 2017. He has since won the Ghanaian national title as well as a regional title.

The 24-year-old has sparred with former WBO 122-pound titleholder Isaac Dogboe, world title challenger Duke Micah and world title hopeful, Jessie Manyo Plange.

Emanuel Navarrete-Christopher Diaz Featherweight Title Fight Set For April 24

Christopher ‘Pitufo’ Diaz spent most of the second half of 2020 awaiting word on a title eliminator which never materialized.

The universe has instead rewarded him with a straightaway title shot.

The featherweight contender has accepted an opportunity to next challenge two-division and reigning WBO featherweight titlist Emanuel Navarrete, sources from both camps have confirmed to BoxingScene.com. The bout will headline an April 24 card to air live on an ESPN platform from a location to be determined.

ESPN Deportes’ Salvador ‘Chava’ Rodriguez was the first to report the news of terms being reached for what figures to be a can’t-miss action fight.

Navarrete (33-1, 28KOs) will attempt the first defense of the featherweight title he acquired in a 12-round decision over unbeaten Ruben Villa last October at MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. The 26-year old from San Juan Zitlaltepec, Mexico collected his second major title with the win, having previously held the WBO junior featherweight title. Five successful defenses came of an active 122-pound reign which began with his unanimous decision win over unbeaten Isaac Dogboe in December 2018.

From there came one of the most active title fight runs in recent times, cramming five successful defenses in a span of nine months.

The rapid stretch for Navarrete with a 12th round stoppage of Dogboe in their May 2019 rematch. Navarrete scored stoppage wins in all five title defenses, the last of which came in halting Jeo Santisima in the 11th round of their title fight clash last February at MGM Grand Garden Arena. The win came in supporting capacity to a joint ESPN/Fox Sports Pay-Per-View venture headlined by Tyson Fury’s 7th round knockout of Deontay Wilder in their heavyweight championship rematch.

Four months later, Navarrete agreed to relinquish his 122-pound title in opting to move up in weight. A 6th round stoppage of Uriel Lopez last June officially ignited his featherweight campaign, with his title win coming just four months later.

Diaz (26-2, 16KOs) has won three of his last four starts since dropping down from junior lightweight following a failed title bid versus Masayuki Ito in July 2018. The lone loss among his current featherweight stretch came at the capable hands of unbeaten Shakur Stevenson, whom outpointed the Puerto Rican contender over 10 rounds in their April 2019 clash as part of an ESPN Pay-Per-View event from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Back-to-back points wins have since followed, including a 10-round decision over Jason Sanchez last June at MGM Grand Conference Center. The bout came as part of the first wave of closed-doors shows presented by Top Rank and ESPN since the pandemic, with hopes of returning in a more significant fight later in the year.

Diaz—a 26-year old contender from Barranquitas, Puerto Rico—was even willing to drop down to junior featherweight, where he was in line for a WBC title eliminator versus unbeaten contender Carlos Castro. The bout was tentatively targeted for a late October slot, only for the pairing to never materialize.

A better opportunity ultimately came along, one which allows Diaz to remain at featherweight and for a second shot to win a major title. A victory will allow him to bring home a title to Puerto Rico, with the island only boasting two active major titlists—WBO strawweight champ Wilfrido ‘Bimbito’ Mendez and seven-division and reigning WBC/WBO featherweight titlist Amanda Serrano.

Navarrete will enter his eighth career title fight, all coming in a 32-month span which also includes a non-title fight.

RICHARD COMMEY EAGER TO PUT TEOFIMO LOPEZ NIGHTMARE BEHIND HIM, ALL SET FOR JACKSON MARINEZ

Big-punching former IBF lightweight titleholder Richard Commey will face once-beaten Jackson Marinez inside The Bubble at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Saturday.

Commey, who is rated No. 4 by The Ring at 135 pounds, will return to action for the first time since losing his title to Teofimo Lopez in December 2019.

“I am really looking forward to going back to Vegas,” Commey (29-3, 26 knockouts) told The Ring. “It’s been a long time coming, but I’m looking forward to getting back in mix. The division is on fire right now. Marinez is a very tricky customer, so I have to be fully focused.”

The 33-year-old Ghanaian remains hugely frustrated at the outcome of the Lopez fight, believing that he didn’t do himself justice.

“I give credit to Teofimo, he caught me with a good shot,” said Commey, who was stopped in two rounds. “Although I got up a bit too early, I felt I recovered and he really didn’t hit me clean with anything else. Being the champ, the ref could have given me a little more time. I made some fundamental mistakes which I will not make again, but I was very disappointed to lose in that manner.”

It was the first definitive loss of Commey’s career. He had previously been on the wrong end of controversial decisions on the road and therefore knows how Marinez feels coming off a highly contentious 12-round unanimous decision defeat to Rolando Romero in August 2020.

“I have watched the fight and he definitely deserved to win,” said Commey. “I have also been on the [wrong] end of hometown decisions with Robert Easter Jr. and Dennis Shafikov. It’s something that happens in the sport from time to time. It’s something that’s part and parcel of boxing. It’s not a good thing but it happens.”

Commey respects Marinez’s skill set and knows he’ll have to be at his best to get the win.

“I think he’s a very good boxer,” acknowledged Commey. “I believe he is trained by Robert Garcia, so I have to give him and his team the upmost respect. He looks very good technically, picks his shots well and is not scared to mix it. I’ll have to be 100-percent on my game to come out victorious.”

Commey spent several months back in his homeland before returning to New York last August to begin preparations for his return. He has remained true to the people that got him to the world title.

“As a person I haven’t changed, but I’ve learned a lot since that fight,” said the ex-titleholder. “I was a world champion, but since the loss, [it] seems like a lot of people have forgotten about me, which I understand as everyone is talking about these new, young lightweights.”

Everyone has an opinion on who’s the best at 135 pounds and Commey is well-placed to assess.

“Teofimo Lopez is the undisputed lightweight champion of the world,” he said. “He beat me fair and square, then he went on to beat [Vasiliy] Lomachenko, who was a unified lightweight champion and the pound-for-pound No. 1 in most people’s eyes.

“So, all other lightweights, in my humble opinion, are pretenders to Teofimo’s crown.”

Long-term manager, Michael Amoo-Bediako, has seen his fighter endure a difficult time since losing his title and is upbeat about his return.

“The most important thing right now is Richard beating Marinez,” said Amoo-Bediako. “We want to keep focused on that, but once Richard wins, he is open to fighting any of the so-called new four kings.

“I’m sure we will have plenty of opportunities as the division is stacked. Richard wants to be a two-time [lightweight] world champion, then moving up to 140 is a possibility that we have spoken about.”

Marinez turned professional in 2016. He fought exclusively in the Caribbean until he got his opportunity to fight in the U.S. on the undercard of Gervonta Davis-Yuriorkis Gamboa in December 2019. He stopped journeyman Yardley Cruz (TKO 2) before losing the aforementioned Romero bout. The 30-year-old Dominican Republic native sports a 19-1, 7 KOs record.

The ESPN telecast will be headlined by Joe Smith vs. Maxim Vlasov. The broadcast begins at 10 p.m. ET/ 7 p.m. PT.

06/02/2021

Mark Breland has come out firing after initially keeping his silence about the remarkable conspiracy accusations Deontay Wilder hurled in his direction late last year.

Breland made a respectful statement on social media when Wilder decided to sack him, but has now given his first interview on the matter.

In October, Wilder spoke out for the first time since March, accusing Tyson Fury of cheating in their rematch first by posting a video and statement on social media, and then following up with various interviews.

In the video, Wilder alleged the Brit tampered with his gloves to put his fist in an improper position.

He added that he believes Fury had a hard object concealed within his gloves to deal extra damage.

The American next claimed his water was spiked with muscle relaxers before the fight, potentially by his own co-trainer Breland.

He also pushed further accusations of disloyalty at Breland – who threw in the towel to end the bout – and sacked him as a result.

Breland told The Fight Is Right: “With Deontay and I, that’s a part of boxing I guess.

“His career is done now, so, I’m done and he’s done. I’m done with him.”

In response to a viewer comment, he added: “Well one thing you all like to say is that, ‘He’s got a lot of power and that’s all.’

“I wish him well and that’s it. Only got his power and we’ll see how far that takes him, that’s all I’m gonna say.”

Regarding Wilder’s conspiracy accusations, Breland said: “I mean, so many people know me, my character speaks for itself.

“Spiked the water? If you’re looking at the tapes or whatever, you don’t ever see that water in my hand. Someone else is giving him the water.

“And regardless of that, I’m there to help you. My attitude is, ‘When you win, I win.’

“I’ve seen some foolish people talking to me about that fight.

“Come on now, only foolish people come out with stuff like that because it’s crazy. If you know me, you know me.”

When asked if he bought into the glove tampering allegations Wilder made against Fury, Breland added: “I doubt it very much, I don’t know, I never seen nothing.

“But still at the same time – he’s not gonna beat Tyson Fury regardless.

“Jay Deas was standing right there when the man was getting his hands wrapped. If they put something in there, either Jay’s blind or..?

“Jay’s right there when he’s getting his hands wrapped and he didn’t say nothing.

“But to be honest, that’s how much he knows about boxing. Hell, he probably could’ve put a cast up in there and he wouldn’t have known!”

Breland also did not hold back when asked about Wilder’s level of opposition.

He declared: “If I boxed the guys he boxed, I’d beat them. That’s the bottom line.”

When countered about Wilder’s good wins against Luis Ortiz, Breland corrected: “You say he had some ‘good wins’? A good win.

“Just that fight, that was it.”

When asked if Wilder has a jab, Breland answered: “No.

“He used the jab one time in that fight with Bermane Stiverne. That was it.”

Regarding Wilder’s training, Breland remarkably revealed: “No, he never hit the bag. He don’t hit the speed bag.

“He don’t jump rope, he don’t hit the speed bag and he don’t hit the heavy bag.”

The subject later changed to the potential undisputed heavyweight title fight between Fury and Anthony Joshua.

The 57-year-old, a former Olympic gold medallist and world champion, claimed: “To be honest, I could beat Anthony Joshua. I could beat Anthony Joshua.

“Here’s a guy who doesn’t have a jab at all. When he fought Ruiz in the second fight, people talked about the jab, that wasn’t a jab, he was just doing this [feints tapping].

“To fight a guy like him, I would out-jab him. I don’t think he’d be able to touch me. I’d put him to sleep, the jab can bang that chin and put you down.

“Fury would beat him up. He has good mind games.

“He plays with these guys, he’s playing with their heads and guys get mad or frustrated, so frustrated it can throw them off their game.

“I’m a fighter, I watch boxing, I watch fighters – from my eyes and what I see, I could beat him [Joshua].

“He’s just straightforward, he’s not hard to hit.”

Of course the one with Logan Paul and I ; and if Jake Paul can get past his next opponent Ben Askren, I will have an exhibition with him as well. I also heard that 50 cent would fight me but claims I'm too small. If he wants to lace up at the end of the year, we can do an exhibition then. I don't care about weight class with any of these guys. The Paul brothers will make great money with the events, but with 50 cent It has to be "Winner Take All".👏👏🥊🥊🥊

It’s On Boxing🥊🥊Aficionado, Billy Joe Saunders 'agrees super-middleweight unification megafight with Canelo Alvarez in May'... provided Mexican comes through unscathed against Avni Yildirim next month

Twelve months later than originally planned, Billy Joe Saunders is finally going to get his shot at Canelo Alvarez after the two fighters reportedly agreed to a super-middleweight unification bout in May.

The Athletic report that should Alvarez come through unscathed in his fight next month against Avni Yildirim in Miami, Saunders will be the next man in his way come May.

The megafight, which is reportedly set for an arena in the United States, would take place on May 1 or May 8, coinciding with the closest weekend to Mexican holiday Cinco de Mayo, which lands on a Wednesday this year.

Saunders, who has an unblemished professional record of 30 wins and 0 defeats, has been vocal in pushing for a WBA, WBC & WBO unification with Alvarez and it appears he now has his wish.

He had been in the running to fight Alvarez in December but the Mexican elected for another British boxer in Callum Smith, who he beat with relative ease in a 12-round decision.

Saunders and Alvarez were originally scheduled to meet in May 2020 but that fight was scrapped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Saunders then rejected an offer of September 12 as he was unwilling to take a pay cut for the behind-closed-doors bout as well as being unable to train properly during lockdown.

Agreeing a fight deal has been made easier after Canelo signed a two-fight deal with Eddie Hearn's Matchroom Boxing earlier this month. Hearn is also the promoter for Saunders.

Alvarez is one of boxing's most impressive shows and he has been viewed as a thorn in the side of British rivals having enjoyed so much success against them over the years.

Saunders would look to buck a trend which has seen the 30-year-old Mexican beat Matthew Hatton, Ryan Rhodes, Amir Khan, and most recently Smith.

Speaking back inn August, tough-talking Saunders was so confident he will beat Alvarez that he offered to only be paid if he won the fight.

'I'll tell you what I'll do – the money I've signed for, keep it. I swear to God, I'll let you keep it,' he told iFL TV.

'If he wants to come to England I'll let him keep it and I'll fight him for free.

'If I beat him, pay me what I'm contracted. If I don't, don't pay me. That's how fair I can be. That's how confident I am of beating him.'

‘I’m Ready’ - Sena Agbeko debuts on ShoBox Against Vladimir Shishkin

Derek Bonnett speaks to Ghanaian super-middleweight contender Sena Agbeko ahead of his US TV introduction

As a child in the USA, I learned more about world geography by watching boxing than I did in attending public schools. Cities like Buenos Aires, Cologne, Culiacan, Cupey Alto, Lyon, Saint Petersburg and Soweto became real pinpoints on a map for me. Mention Brownsville to boxing fans and they will conjure the names Riddick Bowe, Shannon Briggs, Danny Jacobs, Zab Judah and, of course, Mike Tyson without you even saying the words “New York”. Similar can easily be said about “Distrito Federal” in Mexico City.

One such city and country, which I soon began associating with boxing as a hotbed, was Accra, Ghana. Azumah Nelson was the first fighter from this region that I became familiar with as he built an awesome Hall of Fame career with resilient rematch success at featherweight and junior-lightweight. Ike Quartey came later with his powerful jab and right hand amid a stacked welterweight division. The savvy work of Joseph Agbeko, who is somehow still active, came soon after at bantamweight. There have certainly been others. In 2020, Duke Micah failed to join Isaac Dogboe as one of the contemporary Ghanaian champions in the ring after a failed bantamweight title bid versus John Riel Casimero. However, as the new boxing year begins to bud, one of Micah’s amateur stablemates, super-middleweight contender Sena Agbeko, awaits a major opportunity.

During these long, COVID-restricted months, I had been in conversation with Edwin Reyes, a fighter local to the Nashville scene, who volunteered his support in helping me to transition into the boxing scene following my relocation from Connecticut. Accompanied by Reyes and Luis Galarza, who fought both Kell Brook and Austin Trout in his career, I was able to take in roughly six rounds of Agbeko’s sparring in preparation for his upcoming bout with Vladimir Shishkin to be broadcast on Showtime’s ShoBox on February 17. So as not to mistake the unrelated Agbekos, I will refer to my focus by his first name, Sena, which translates to “God’s gift”.

I’m never shocked by a boxer’s intellect or outside-the-ring demeanor, but it was clear that Sena is a man who took advantage of his time in the classroom. He also was a gentleman, who took care to introduce his lovely wife, Edwina, to me before anything too boxing-related was discussed. He spoke of his bride with great esteem. ‘Eddy’, as she prefers, has also stepped in between the ropes of a boxing ring.

Not only well-spoken, Sena, 28, demonstrated a reflective stance on his work and was refreshingly open to the feedback of his trainer, Kelvin Garcia. One could see Sena reasoning out the information and its applicable practicality in his training. I could not surmise an iota of excessive pride or ego during the workout.

Physically, Sena’s built like a 168-pound version of Deontay Wilder with muscle definition along his back that would have Timothy Bradley stealing envious glances. He stands tall at 6ft 1in atop a pair of sinewy stalks. He’s built for length, but in this particular showcase, the budding super-middleweight spent a lot of time working on the inside and countering under pressure. Hia breathing remained steady under what I saw as a rather intense workout, suggesting he’s spent early-morning time on the road.

Having watched Shishkin in action already, I am excited for this upcoming showdown, which just so happens to be in my native Connecticut. The Mohegan Sun will play host as the ShoBox series continues to showcase emerging fighters making their strides toward world championships. Agbeko-Shishkin is the 10-round main event of a six-bout card.

So, before enjoying the night’s action, please allow Seconds Out to introduce you to Sena Agbeko.

SecondsOut: Sena, tell me about your early career in Ghana. What were some of your ring accomplishments and what prompted your move to the USA?
Sena Agbeko: Boxing is huge in the capital city of Ghana, Accra, specifically [the region of] Bukom. It probably has the most boxing gyms per area of any place in the world. I was an outsider and didn’t come from Bukom. As an amateur I had to earn the respect of the boxers and coaches of the area and within a year, I was in the national team. I was brought on board on merit of my hard work and discipline. In 2011, I earned the right to go to the Olympic qualifiers, but was brushed aside for someone with more experience on the international stage. I was also considered ‘young’ and therefore had time to mature; however, I decided to go pro.
In June 2011 I turned pro. This was also in [my] second year of college. I juggled school, a part-time job and a professional boxing career and made it work. At 15-0 with 15 KOs, there was no one else to challenge as I’d already won the Ghanaian middleweight title and then the West African super-middleweight belt.

SO: How did you get involved in Boxcino with ESPN? What was your experience with defeat and how did you rebound?
SA: The next step was to come to the USA to work towards a world championship. My first experience in the USA was the Boxcino tournament on ESPN which my managers at the time secured a spot for me on. It was my first fight on American soil and [led to] my only loss [to Raymond Gatica]. I attribute [this] to a variety of factors. Key among them being working too hard the wrong way. My career became fraught with disagreements with a management that had become uninterested and pretty much just wanted to ‘cash out’. I moved to Las Vegas for a year to further hone my craft and later on to Nashville where I met a few excellent coaches [such as] Christy Halbert, who led the first women’s boxing team to the London 2012 games.

SO: How has your career progressed in the last several years? What gains have you made as a boxer in terms of skill? What would you say are your strengths?
SA: Being in the US, I’ve amassed a lot of experience just traveling and working with some of the best fighters from Las Vegas, Miami, New York, Houston, Los Angeles and other cities. I’ve come to better understand the sport, the politics of it as well as the scientific elements of performance. I would say my greatest strength right now is my ability to adapt in the ring.

SO: Brian Vera is a very experienced veteran. Tell me about that fight and what it was like for you?
SA: Brian Vera is the biggest name on my résumé. I fought him in Nashville in 2018 at a time when he was pushing for a great comeback so I know I fought a very determined and well-prepared version of him. It was a fight that I prepared for in Vegas. Like every fight, it had its lessons and I was happy to get the win in front of my now hometown crowd in Nashville.

SO: Who are some of your heroes in the sport? Being from Ghana, did you follow the names of Nelson and Quartey, etc?
SA: Growing up in Ghana, I remember we’d wake up at dawn due to the time difference between the US and Ghana to watch legends like Azumah Nelson and Ike Quartey and later on, Joshua Clottey and Joseph Agbeko. At the time, I didn’t know that I wanted to box. It was years later, when I decided to pursue a professional sports career, that I chose boxing. In the last three years, my career has progressed further than it had in the initial few years. I have fought eight times since my initial fight here on US soil and won them all.

SO: Describe the opportunity in front of you and why you are confident in facing unbeaten Vladimir Shishkin on ShoBox on February 17?
SA: Shishkin, for me, is just another fighter in my path to becoming world champion. I am truly grateful to his promoter and Showtime for the opportunity to put it all on the line and this opportunity couldn’t have come at a better time. I am ready.
