Home to HKUST’s cultural activities and a new landmark for large-scale events.

The Shaw Auditorium is home to HKUST's cultural activities and a new landmark for large scale events, providing new flexibilities and possibilities to create a vibrant arts and cultural scene at the University. Established in 2021, the venue serves as a multi-purpose auditorium with a seating capacity of around 850 for concerts and over 1,300 in flat floor configurations, the venue can be used to

host different kinds of events such as concerts, theater performances, lectures, exhibitions, and ceremonies. There are also supporting facilities offering space for seminars, rehearsals, small-scale performances, and gatherings both indoors and outdoors. We would like to sincerely thank the Shaw Foundation Hong Kong Limited’s generous HK$150 million donation which has made possible this impressive outcome before our eyes.

🎻Riding on the success of the previous collaboration with the Hong Kong String Orchestra (HKSO) 香港弦樂團 Hong Kong String Orchestra for the chamber music concert "Encounter with City's Talents: Chamber Music from the Romantic Era", this upcoming concert will showcase the talents of professional musicians from the HKSO and young, emerging talents from the Asia Youth String Orchestra (AYSO) Asia Youth String Orchestra 亞洲青年弦樂團 ✨

Following the overwhelming response to our ”Open Call for Creativity - Photography Exhibition“ this April, we received numerous submissions for the photography exhibition at the foyer exhibition space of Shaw Auditorium.🖼️

This exhibition offers a unique opportunity to see the world through the eyes of our talented HKUST community members. There are many varieties of osmanthus, one of which stands out for its late blooming and the strongest fragrance—the "late osmanthus." 🌼

🎬In 2023, a captivating film documenting "Pai Niang Niang" was released, reminiscent of the fragrance of the late osmanthus. Director Isabel Wong brilliantly brings to life the creation and production of the first-ever Chinese-language musical, Pai Niang Niang, featuring Rebecca Pan. This extraordinary documentary is the culmination of years of observation and exploration.

In July 2024, the much-anticipated Late Osmanthus arrives at the Shaw Auditorium, offering the audience an opportunity to experience its forward-looking performance once again. Let's have a sneak peek at the trailer and listen to the recommendations of Ms. Tina Liu and the girl group XiX! 🎞🎶

桂花有許多種，其中一種最遲開花，花香最濃，這種就是「遲桂花」。

We extend our gratitude to Upcycling Product Designer Kevin Cheung 張瑋晉 Kevin Cheung for hosting the Percussion x Sustainability Workshop. During the workshop, our participants turned disposed plastic bottles, typically regarded as trash, into musical instruments. Not only did they revel in the joy of turning waste into treasures, but also acquired a deeper understanding of concepts of upcycling and sustainability!

🎬 Don‘t miss the documentary Pai Niang Niang: The Last Osmanthus Blossom, which brings to life the creation and production of the first ever Chinese-language musical, Pai Niang Niang, featuring Rebecca Pan in the roles of the original playwright, singer and performer in the debut of 1972. 🎤Rebecca Pan used Broadway musical model to adapt the well-known Chinese Legend of the White Snake, blending Eastern and Western theatrical styles, which was groundbreaking in the 1970s.🐍🔥

The screening will be followed by a sharing session with the film director Isabel Wong, and Kathy Fok. Young singer-songwriter Ashley Lin will perform a well-known song of Rebecca Pan and the University Philharmonic Orchestra at HKUSTSU will also perform selected original music pieces composed for the musical.✨

🎬 1972年3月，潘迪華自資製作香港首部華語音樂劇《白孃孃》。該劇以百老匯音樂劇模式改編膾炙人口的中國民間傳說《白蛇傳》，其實是中西合璧，亦是將中國傳統音樂、舞蹈、服裝和舞台設計結合西方現代觀念的大膽嘗試，卻因走得太前而不獲市場接受，亦因沒有任何舞台紀錄片段傳世而被淡忘。黃翠華導演經過多年來的觀察及發掘，執導紀錄片《白孃孃：一朶遲桂花》，透過這部紀錄片將《白孃孃》的點滴記錄下來。

放映後設座談會，由導演與霍嘉敏小姐分享拍攝點滴，並邀請到唱作歌手林愷鈴小姐及香港科技大學學生會管弦樂團演出潘迪華的名曲，讓觀眾重溫《白孃孃》的魅力。

LauZone《撈鬆》@HKUST “Where are you from? Where are you REALLY from?” This trivial bit of information seems to be useful only while filling in application forms. However, what else does our place of ancestry represent? Other than a few choice slangs, Hong Kong people are all but detached from the dialects spoken fluently among the older generations. Continuing to tackle this bittersweet relationship is LauZone co-created by Yuri Ng, Anna Lo and Rick Lau. As the creative team behind the critically acclaimed and hit production Tri Ka Tsai showcased also at Tai Kwun in 2019, the multi-talented trio presents another poignant yet playful performance on the rich variety of Chinese dialects. “Lau Zone” is the Cantonese colloquial term towards non-Cantonese natives, which essentially includes most of the older Hong Kongers being immigrants to the city. Get ready for the euphony of dialects, music, and laughter as Rick Lau and Anna Lo shine in a cabaret show that sings tribute to the lives and memories of the melting pot known as Hong Kong as well as our roots and inherited legacy. 「你邊喥鄉下？」鄉下，除了表格上的藉貫之外，還代表什麼？潮洲話、上海話、台山話，「自己人，打死冇相干！」、「阿拉上海寧！」。上一代流利使用的鄉下話，新一代的香港人還說得到、聽得懂嗎？伍宇烈、盧宜均及劉榮豐繼2019年在大館呈獻好評如潮、一票難求的《Tri 家仔》之後，再次聯手打造全新創作《撈鬆》，從鄉下方言出發，說唱似遠還近的語言與故事。「撈鬆」是廣東人對外省人的稱呼，香港曾大批吸納外省移民，大概你我的上幾代都曾是「撈鬆」，與那陌生的鄉土有一絲關連。劉榮豐與盧宜均將會把各式異鄉故事，繼續以歌廳cabaret形式，輕鬆混搭於一夜歌聲對談之中，多聲道唱出香港這個文化溶爐的生活與回憶，連結跨代的根源與傳承。 📅 APR
