Originally, the first President and founder of the University, Dr. Lam Chi-fung, conceived the idea of building a hall for University functions. In 1970, on the occasion of their Golden Wedding Anniversary, Dr. and Mrs. Lam donated half a million dollars towards the construction of the auditorium. A prominent local architect, Eric Cumine, took charge of the project. However, Dr. Lam passed away th

e following year before the project got underway. The Board of Governors decided to honour Dr. Lam by expanding the planned auditorium into a much larger scale project --- the development of the Lam Chi-fung Memorial Building. As a part of the project, the Academic Community Hall would serve as a cultural centre for the University and its surrounding community, thus providing a direct link between town and gown. At present, the Lam Chi-fung Memorial Building consists of an auditorium, a lobby, a VIP room and some display areas. The Hall's seating capacity is 1,346.

Our Story

大學會堂的啟用,標誌著香港浸會大學發展的新一頁。大學的始創人及首任校長林子豐博士早年構思興建一個大型會堂,作為舉行各類大學活動之用。在1970年,林博士伉儷在金婚紀念典禮上慷慨捐出50萬港元興建禮堂,建築工程由本地著名建築師Eric Cumine負責。可惜林校長在翌年遽然長逝,未能親眼目睹大學會堂動工。

為表揚林博士的無私奉獻,校董會決定把興建禮堂計劃擴展成更大型的工程——興建林子豐博士紀念大樓,並寄望大學會堂落成後,會成為大學和鄰近社區的文化中心,把大學師生和附近的居民聯繫起來。現在,林子豐博士紀念大樓內設有會堂、大堂、貴賓房及多處可作展覽的位置,而會堂則設有1,346個座位。
