Mengzy will be joining us for our Magnetic Soul & Friends history of Breakbeat special. We wanted to invite a DJ from next gen to give us their perspective of rave history, who is sincerely passionate about music and a true educator. She has recently received her PHD is Musicology and wrote her thesis on the history of rave culture in Hong Kong, so we feel like she is more than qualified to give us a sonic lesson.

I vividly remember the first time I heard Mengzy DJing. It was at a Subi Subez party at Gecko a few years ago. I didn’t know who she was at the time and had never heard of her. What she was playing instantly caught my ear. It was the first time in a long time that I heard a younger generation DJ that had obviously been doing their homework. She was playing some classic jungle alongside some ravey stuff alongside some newer forward thinking bass music. I listened to the whole set fully captivated.

Fast forward a few years when I had met and gotten to know Mengzy, and she has turned out to be a wonderful person, confidant, and close friend.

Mengzy’s accolades are impressive considering just a few years ago she didn’t know much about electronic music. She is a DJ, Producer, Music Journalist, Radio Host, Promoter, Academic, University Lecturer, and PhD in Musicology. She’s had a show on RTHK radio and does a monthly “Mengzy Selects” series for Mixmag Asia reviewing and showcasing original electronic music from around Asia. She also co-founded Feed the Dragon, which promotes UK Bass music and culture in HK and Asia.

What’s amazing about her DJing is that she has such a wide range, and she is absolutely able to pull it off. It’s a testament to how much time and effort she puts into researching her music. She delivers diverse vibes in anything from sunset beach club to industrial warehouse and festival settings. Mengzy is also frequently tapped by luxury, lifestyle, and corporate brands for events and launch parties.

DJ Nipper is a hugely talented chart-topping producer, working DJ, scratching and mixing specialist, streaming host, DJ instructor, and generally an awesome human being.

This Saturday on our Magnetic Soul and friends night at Oma, Nipper will be taking us on an oldskool journey. This will be the first time he will be playing an oldskool set in a club in Hong Kong in all of the years that he has been living here.

Back in 2009, We hosted Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex in Hong Kong and at dinner Marcus had only one request. He said he had a mate named Nipper that was one of his biggest influences from Manchester that was living in Hong Kong and wanted to get in touch with him. At that time, I did not know Nipper very well and did not have his phone number, so wasn’t able to get in touch and make that connection. However, Marcus talking about Nipper and telling old stories cemented my understanding of how influential Nipper’s career has been and how talented and impactful he is as a producer and DJ.

In the late 1980’s, Nipper was one of the pioneers of the Manchester House Scene along with Sasha, Laurent Garnier, Justin Robertson, Graeme Park, Steve Williams, 808 State DJs, Stu Allan & Jon DaSilva. Nipper was support DJ for Dance Bands: 808 State, Public Enemy, Big Daddy Kane, Prodigy, N-Joi, Shades Of Rhythm, Dream Frequency, The Shamen, Utah Saints, Bassheads, and Evolution.

In 1991, he embarked on his recording career releasing two tracks “Nightmare” and “Devastating Beat Creator” on Warp Records under the pseudonym “Kid Unknown” - the latter was voted number 3 in the All-time Hardcore Chart in Muzik Magazine.

Nipper set up LCD Records in 1998 with his partner Ian Bland (Dream Frequency) going on to release 9 singles including “Sanctuary”, & “Do You Believe” as Dejure & “Heaven and Earth” as Red.

On his 2002 debut album "Airdrawndagger”, DJ Sasha credited Nipper as one of his inspirational figures.

In 2017 he launched a label called - No Fakerz Records.

In all Nipper has had to date: Six Top 75 UK hits.

This is a throw back to our first ever event flyer. It was a series of Thursday nights over the Summer of 2005 at a place just off Hollywood Road called Chapter 3. The venue eventually became an after hours club that was infamously known as Buddha Lounge. More recently, it’s been transformed into a sterile cocktail bar fittingly called Penicillin.

Jane () in Shanghai did the flyer, though she had moved to Shanghai about 6 months earlier by this point, when I had arrived, and was no longer doing events in Hong Kong. She had given me some advice on possible venues and connected me with her old crew Kay C () and JP Lui, Lai Fai () and Mandy Foxymcdee ().

A few other tidbits about this place. The venue manager who let us do the Drum and Bass nights was a wonderful Nepalese lady called Ritika (), who would go on to run a successful place called Baby Buddha, where many people may know her from. If it wasn’t for Ritika giving us a chance on a Thursday night, we probably wouldn’t have gotten very far doing Drum and Bass nights at that time. It wasn’t exactly very easy to convince a venue to let us do DNB back then.

Chapter 3 was also owned by my friend Gary Stokes (), who happens to be the brother of my very close friend Andy Stokes (.hk), who I wouldn’t meet for a few years after this.

Kay C will be in Hong Kong this week and we are going to have a reunion of sorts at Oma for our Magnetic Soul & Friends Drum and Bass night on Friday. Get down to see some old and new faces.

Also, details about our 18 Year Anniversary are going to be announced shortly.

We haven’t been able to join any of Omni’s (.asia) previous widely acclaimed outdoor electronic music festivals due to various scheduling conflicts, but we are fully locked in for their next event called Omni Field, which takes place for 24 hours on May 27th and 28th.

We will be playing the sunset set on the bass stage and we reckon this one is going to be one for the history books.

This is going to be their largest and most extensive undertaking to date. There will be two separate stages (house/techno and bass music) and will be presenting 30 leading local underground DJs.�
