Az Art Quarter Budapest egy privát kezdeményezésből született, független kulturális intézmény, ami Budafokon az egykori Haggenmacher Sörgyár épületeiben található. Ahol a 30-as évekig sört főztek, ott ma egy dinamikusan fejlődő, nemzetközi kortárs művészeti központ működik. A színvonalasan és környezettudatosan felújított ipari épületegyüttesben számos magyar kortárs képzőművész műterme és kreatív

vállalkozás bázisa található. Az AQB nagy hangsúlyt fektet a nemzetközi jelenlétre is. 2012 óta rezidencia programot működtet, az ide érkező külföldi művészeknek nemcsak szállást, műtermet és teljes infrastruktúrát biztosít, hanem arra is lehetőséget ad, hogy kapcsolatot teremthessenek a kortárs magyar művészeti szcénával. Az AQB kiállítótere, a Project Space egyedi hangulatú kiállításaival várja a közönséget. Emellett az intézményben időszakosan más kulturális programok – koncertek, cirkuszi és színházi előadások – is megvalósulnak. Mára az AQB-ben a legkülönfélébb művészeti ágak képviselői találtak otthonra, zenétől az iparművészeten és táncművészeten át a képzőművészetig, így egy dinamikus, élő és kreatív közösség lakja be a házat, ahol a magyar és a külföldi művészek egymás munkájába betekintve, lehetőségeiket kitágítva tudnak alkotni.

Located in the former Haggenmacher brewery, where beer was brewed until the late 30's, the AQB creates today a different sort of creative blend, being a cultural melting pot, a centre of creativity for artists from Hungary and abroad. This venue enables painters, sculptors and all forms of artists and cultural craftsmen from different countries, to share, to develop, to engage in cross cultural creativity with local, Hungarian peers in order to broaden both professional and personal horizons and deepen their experience and perspective. The Art Quarter Budapest is meant to become a cross-cultural space of art in which international creatives of different artistic styles will encounter peers from Hungary and through this exchange be able to broaden both their professional and personal experiences and horizons. Foreign artists will be given a totally new environment for both working and living and with that, the opportunity to make important contacts and present their work on site in the local cultural scene. On the other side, Hungarian artists, and members of the Budapest's cultural life will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate directly with international artists. An opportunity to build long-term sustainable cultural relations at the international level will arise. This will be achieved through distribution of our 21 workshops, in a 50-50 ratio among Hungarian and foreign artists. Through the creation and presentation of their work, both international and local artists jointly create a transdisciplinary location for discussion, which will form a platform for artists of all stripes. In the medium term the AQB will enter into a dialogue with other international institutions of the same kind, with the aim to enable a mutual exchange and enrich the work of both local and international artists both on the local and international level. The AQB will so become part of an international network, which represents the Hungarian cultural scene across countries as well as the integration of international artists into local Hungarian cultural life. All participating artists will have the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience in exhibitions in the house and on regularly scheduled open studio days.

A Monobonc feketébe borult boncasztalok felbomlasztására invitál. A téli napfordulóra, vagyis a legsötétebb napra hangolódva kiindulási pontunk a világosságról a sötétségre helyeződik át. Fekete festék visszafejtéséből az asztal szürkülete kínálkozik. A papír anyag bevonásával és nyomatkészítésével a felületet transzferáljuk, így újra teret engedve a fény elemének beköszöntésére.

Az Erekliában tudós nőként csodát teszek, és a bort vérré változtatom. A vért egyházi ostyán kínálom fogyasztásra. A vér egy részét mumifikált ereklyeként is elérhetővé teszem bárki számára. Mindezt ingyen. A bűnök nyomasztó súlya alóli instant megváltást sem és az ezzel járó öröklétet sem tudom felkínálni azoknak, akik szabadok annyira, hogy hisznek a saját mindenhatóságukban és teremtőerejükben. Néha a csodák egyszerűen csak oldják a szorongásom.

In the past months, three resident artists of AQB —Ludmila Chrachovinová, Brooke Leifso, and Ari-Pekka Leinonen—have been working in a shared studio. Their closing event and exhibition will also take place in a shared space, the Project Space. On Friday, December 13, Brooke Leifso’s performance series will formally introduce this space, which will be expanded on Saturday, December 14 with Ludmila Chrachovinová’s paintings and drawings, and Ari-Pekka Leinonen’s sound performance and installation.

🟢 BROOKE LEIFSO: BODY WORK (Performance Series)

Brooke is a disabled/Crip artist, academic and expressive arts practitioner. She has made artwork with youth, disability communities, communities in conflict and professionally through collective creation and as a solo performance/theatre artist.
Brooke Leifso's residency is part of the exchange programme with Akademie Schloss Solitude.

Body Work is a series of short performances exploring Brooke’s experience of inhabiting her body and mind. The series uses concepts of accessibility, phenomenological methods, and performative metaphors to offer the audience insight into another person's lived experience. As part of Body Work, the performance Duo of Simple Studies in Dis/ability—created in collaboration with Michael Winter—will be presented. The deceptively simple score amplifies differences in breath and body through sonic practices.

🟢 LUDMILA CHRACHOVINOVÁ: SHARED SPACES, PRIVATE GAPS

"My work emphasizes the experience of presence, communication with space, and the role of the viewer's body. Through my paintings and drawings, I aim to recreate sensations based on physical memory, such as the tension and relief of stretching or the discomfort and pressure of prolonged immobility.
Inspired by my ceramic studies in high school, I approach art-making as a dialogue between the body and its environment.
In my artworks, I aim to create intimate scenarios and dialogues between pieces and their surroundings, using delicate installation gestures to guide viewers. I prefer larger formats to reflect the scale of my movements. Working in AQB's spacious studio has encouraged me to explore tempera as a new medium and experiment with color in ways I hadn’t before.”

🟢 ARI-PEKKA LEINONEN: ADONNER
(performance and installation)

ADONNER (French: à donner, meaning “to give”) is a performance that explores the phenomenon of giving through rap music and speculative "sound choreography." A pre-recorded sound track replaces the live performer, allowing the work of choreographers, puppeteers, stagehands, and other typically unseen roles to come into focus.
The performer acts as an “all-purpose technician” or “one-person team” to orchestrate the processes that bring the soundscape and a speaker-headed puppet to life.
ADONNER was supported by the Finnish Arts Promotion Centre and developed during a three-month residency at AQB as part of the pARTirinitiative, funded by the European Union’s Next Generation EU program.

Let us share with you the documentation of Ari-Pekka Leinonen’s sound installation titled L=10, reimagined for our autumn open house.

🔸About the artist:
Ari-Pekka has been with us since the beginning of October as aqb’s resident. He actively works with performatic sound art installations that utilise sound projection with multiple loudspeakers. Other than that he is interested in carpenting, possibilities of loudspeakers as wooden sculptures and how the sound systems create platforms for moving bodies and sonic storytelling.

Az 🄽🄿🄲-ről:
A performansz az agy és a szem kapcsolatát vizsgálja a neuroplaszticitás tükrében, az érzékelés és tapasztalás átalakulására fókuszálva. Az “NPC” cím egyszerre utal a semleges “Non-Playable Character” figurára és a nyugati orvostudomány steril, groteszk esztétikájára.
A hideg, klinikai díszletben fehér köpenyes alakok ismétlődő “műtétei” jelenítik meg az agy és a szem szerepcseréjét, mint a tapasztalás és érzékelés újragondolásának metaforáját. A neuroplaszticitás és a művészet összefonódik: az alkotás kreatív folyamata az agy struktúráit alakítja, új idegi összeköttetéseket hozva létre.
A performansz rávilágít, hogy a kreativitás neurobiológiai változásokat idézhet elő, párhuzamba állítva a művészeti és tudományos kísérletezést.

Our autumn emo open house brought a previously unseen but very old corner of aqb into play, perhaps to show how much has changed and is changing around here on the 20th anniversary of the house...
Valentina Várhelyi and Júlia Kerekes with their performance 🄽🄿🄲 - ɴᴇᴜʀᴏ ᴘʟᴀsᴛɪᴄ ᴄʟɪɴɪᴄ invited the ghosts of the abandoned places that haunted us on the TV, and who made Eszter Nagy’s installation “𝖌𝖗𝖆𝖙𝖊𝖋𝖚𝖑 𝖋𝖔𝖗 𝖙𝖍𝖊 𝖛𝖎𝖔𝖑𝖊𝖓𝖈𝖊 𝖔𝖋 𝖍𝖊𝖆𝖑𝖎𝖓𝖌” work according to its purpose and in Péter Teller’s video “̷W̷o̷n̷k̷y̷ ̷W̷a̷n̷k̷”̷ they certainly did some funny stuff 😃

Szabó Beáta a Könny preparátum című happeningjével csatlakozik a Wounded Healer programjához, amit november 21-én csütörtök este 8-tól láthattok a -ban.
Ebben a munkájában ._.szabo elixírt készít magából, a könnyeiből, egy orvosságot, amely gyógyítja az érzelmi sebeket. Azzal a szándékkal, hogy konzerválja a könnyei tápanyagtartalmát és gyógyító hatását, egy molekuláris gasztronómiai eljárás segítségével preparálja őket. Mű(vészeti) könnyeit hagyományos módon, szájon át adható orvosságként kínálja a szenvedőknek és a gyógyulni vágyóknak.

Beáta Szabó joins the Wounded Healer programme tomorrow from 8 pm with her performance Tear Preparation.
In this work, ._.szabo makes an elixir of herself, her tears, a medicine that heals emotional wounds. With the intention of preserving the nutrients and healing properties of her tears, she prepares them using a molecular gastronomy process. She offers her artificial tears as a traditional oral remedy to sufferers and those who wish to heal.

𝙈𝙀𝙀𝙏 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙍𝙀𝙎𝙄𝘿𝙀𝙉𝙏𝙎 𝙊𝙁 𝘼𝙌𝘽
Matthew is a Screenwriter and film Director based in Melbourne who is interested in developing visual stories centred around human connectedness, the intersection of mental health issues and societal barriers, and the absurdity of being alive, while trying to explore these stories through their humour and inherent beauty. A graduate from the Masters of Screenwriting program at the Victorian College of the Arts, he has written and directed a variety of short films that have screened nationally and internationally. His feature screenplay, ‘Go Away’ was Longlisted for the Australian Writer’s Guild Emerging Writer’s Award in 2022, and his most recent short that he co-wrote and directed with the help of the Cinespace Residency Program, premiered at the 2023 SXSW Sydney Screen Festival, and later had its international premiere at the Palm Springs International Shortsfest in California. He has also had video work screen at Unassigned Gallery in Melbourne, and most recently, as part of a pop up installation at Art Basel 2024. His stay at the aqb was supported by the Creative Australia.

During his stay, Matthew worked on a short film that explores the power dynamics that emerge around questions asked in institutionalised situations. All this through a staged audition for a non-existent film. A prototype of the film will be screened at the Mines on 26 October as part of the Open House, with a performance by Susanna Melem and Chili Tomasson serving as the first part of a multi-part video work and performance.

We are super excited to have back in aqb with 𝙍𝙀𝘼𝘿𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙍𝙊𝙊𝙈, an ongoing improvisational and performative practice that invites the audience to witness a journey of investigating precarious routines of increasing the sensitivity of attention. It tries to braid the multitude of strands of information and possibilities to braid them into one singularity.

𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘧𝘰𝘳𝘮𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘣𝘢𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘰𝘣𝘷𝘪𝘰𝘶𝘴, 𝘪𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘰𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘵𝘰𝘱 𝘸𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘪𝘵 𝘧𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘴 𝘣𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘸 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘳𝘥𝘴.

Reading the Room appeared and was developed earlier this year in a dressing room of Tala Dance Center hosted by DIVERT in Zagreb. In the Café of Mu theater in Budapest hosted by DanceShop. In an art studio at Zymurgy performance night at aqb, in a train station waiting room at Bánkitó Festival, and in the backstage of Artus, Budapest.

AQB runs an international artist in residency program, provides space for an experimental sound studio (Spatial Sound Institute) and organizes exhibitions in the special atmosphere of aqb Project Space. Besides all of that the institution hosts other types of cultural programs like concerts, contemporary circus shows and performances. AQB became a cultural melting pot of an international creative community with wide variety of artists from music, applied arts, dance and fine art scene.
