Ahol a 30-as évekig sört főztek, ott ma egy dinamikusan fejlődő, nemzetközi kortárs művészeti központ működik.

---------------------------------------------

Located in the former Haggenmacher brewery, where beer was brewed until the late 30's, the AQB creates today a different sort of creative blend, being a cultural melting pot, a centre of creativity for artists from Hungary and abroad. This venue enables painters, sculptors and all forms of artists and cultural craftsmen from different countries, to share, to develop, to engage in cross cultural creativity with local, Hungarian peers in order to broaden both professional and personal horizons and deepen their experience and perspective. The Art Quarter Budapest is meant to become a cross-cultural space of art in which international creatives of different artistic styles will encounter peers from Hungary and through this exchange be able to broaden both their professional and personal experiences and horizons. Foreign artists will be given a totally new environment for both working and living and with that, the opportunity to make important contacts and present their work on site in the local cultural scene. On the other side, Hungarian artists, and members of the Budapest's cultural life will have the opportunity to meet and collaborate directly with international artists. An opportunity to build long-term sustainable cultural relations at the international level will arise. This will be achieved through distribution of our 21 workshops, in a 50-50 ratio among Hungarian and foreign artists. Through the creation and presentation of their work, both international and local artists jointly create a transdisciplinary location for discussion, which will form a platform for artists of all stripes. In the medium term the AQB will enter into a dialogue with other international institutions of the same kind, with the aim to enable a mutual exchange and enrich the work of both local and international artists both on the local and international level. The AQB will so become part of an international network, which represents the Hungarian cultural scene across countries as well as the integration of international artists into local Hungarian cultural life. All participating artists will have the opportunity to present their work to a wider audience in exhibitions in the house and on regularly scheduled open studio days.

Matthew is a Screenwriter and film Director based in Melbourne who is interested in developing visual stories centred around human connectedness, the intersection of mental health issues and societal barriers, and the absurdity of being alive, while trying to explore these stories through their humour and inherent beauty. A graduate from the Masters of Screenwriting program at the Victorian College of the Arts, he has written and directed a variety of short films that have screened nationally and internationally. His feature screenplay, ‘Go Away’ was Longlisted for the Australian Writer’s Guild Emerging Writer’s Award in 2022, and his most recent short that he co-wrote and directed with the help of the Cinespace Residency Program, premiered at the 2023 SXSW Sydney Screen Festival, and later had its international premiere at the Palm Springs International Shortsfest in California. He has also had video work screen at Unassigned Gallery in Melbourne, and most recently, as part of a pop up installation at Art Basel 2024. His stay at the aqb was supported by the Creative Australia.

During his stay, Matthew worked on a short film that explores the power dynamics that emerge around questions asked in institutionalised situations. All this through a staged audition for a non-existent film. A prototype of the film will be screened at the Mines on 26 October as part of the Open House, with a performance by Susanna Melem and Chili Tomasson serving as the first part of a multi-part video work and performance.

We are super excited to have back in aqb with 𝙍𝙀𝘼𝘿𝙄𝙉𝙂 𝙏𝙃𝙀 𝙍𝙊𝙊𝙈, an ongoing improvisational and performative practice that invites the audience to witness a journey of investigating precarious routines of increasing the sensitivity of attention. It tries to braid the multitude of strands of information and possibilities to braid them into one singularity.

𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗔𝗥𝗧𝗜𝗦𝗧𝗦 𝗢𝗙 𝗔𝗤𝗕 🫧\( ^.^)ノ✨
Tamara Zsófia Vadas is an artist, dancer, performer, and choreographer who has been there for our community in a very sensitive, empowering and performative way for over a decade now.
It would be too long to list here all the choreographers, dancers and collectives she has worked with, the awards she received or the places where she taught. Let’s just say we hope to see (or even be part of) a lot more of her inspiring projects around in the future.

“Dance does not interest me as a combination of steps, but as a way of creating connections; establishing a relationship with a certain something or somebody. My main interests are the acts of interactions and the applications of different disciplines in performative situations. Who I work with has always been very important to me. I am looking to share and exchange our knowledge with different ages and different backgrounds as well.
I do not function as a company. I practice horizontal relations.
My artistic practice is not focused on or limited to a single project but instead it runs continuously.
I perceive the different artistic collectives around me as an organically emerging cluster.
I want to step into the field of not knowing and I want to keep myself in between.
I believe dance is an artistic form that changes all the time.
I believe in a non-hierarchical common creative process.
I believe in collective efforts. “

We are pleased to announce that this year's winner of the three-month artist exchange programme at Akademie Schloss Solitude (Stuttgart) is Tamara Zsófia Vadas, artist, dancer, performer, and choreographer.
And we are especially pleased that, in addition to the annual exchange, Schloss Solitude has offered an extra place in its Eastern European program to Dániel Szalai visual artist. This means that from this year's four shortlisted artists (by name: Ádám Albert, Patricia Harsány, Dániel Szalai, Zsófia Tamara Vadas) two will be residents in one of the most important European AIR institutions this autumn.
Thank you to all the applicants, congratulations to the shortlisted artists and to the winners!

"I consider important the culture of the body, the diversity of dance art and the possibility of a physical existence present in contemporary art, which I can cultivate through dance and performance art. I feel a responsibility to share and exchange knowledge and a need for constant development. Art for me is a filter through which I experience, explore and perceive the world around me. The knowledge that is in our bodies and can be expressed through our bodies represents for many of us a language that is spoken by all, but the re-discovery and contextualisation of this knowledge can be both research and artistic practice.” Tamara. Zsófia. Vadas

"As an artist and researcher, I work on issues related to critical posthumanism and animal studies, reflecting on social, political and environmental issues. In the past years, I have focused on intensive dairy farming and precision agriculture, working on projects that question our relationship with nature and technology. Using the modern dairy cow as an epitome or metaphor for civilisation, I have explored the various technologies that animal capital uses to exploit the generative functions of non-human female animals for its own benefit.” Daniel Szalai

Working as a single entity, Jakub Hájek & František Hanousek share a foresight and synchronicity in their art practice. Co-authorship has never been a motive for them, but a basic condition. Using different artistic languages, such as ink drawing or wire crafting, they make tiny connections between certain historical periods, which they describe as: “the universal industrial key drama, the transition from psychic woodiness to psychic metallicity”.
Jakub and František (1994, Czech Republic) are based in Prague and Vimperk. Their work has also been incorporated as an exhibition design for the aqb’s To the Bottom of the Goblet exhibition, which is an updated and expanded reprise of the collective exhibition entitled Kingdom of Hex, which took place last year at gallery in Prague. The exhibition will open on Friday, August 30, 7 pm

The exhibition will present a group of artists of four nationalities, belonging to the youngest generation of artists from the ranks of students, recent graduates of art universities and established artists belonging to the Czech and Hungarian art scene. Their work can be broadly characterized as a return to Romantic tendencies, which have increasingly gained prominence in contemporary art over the last few years, not only in the Central European region. The exhibition is at the same time an updated and expanded reprise of the collective exhibition entitled Kingdom of Hex, which took place last year at the MeetFactory gallery in Prague. The architectural design of the exhibition is the work of the artistic duo Jakub Hájek and František Hanousek.
