Nano and Ratna Riantiarno founded Teater Koma in Jakarta in the year 1997. The philosophy behind the name is to be continuous, never to be finished, and never ever to stop. With Teater Koma he skyrocketed as one of the plays in the world of Indonesian theater.

In Teater Koma’s early days, he wrote most of his stage works, including; Paper House, J.J Atawa Jian Juhro, Sorry. Sorry. Sorry, Contest 1980, Cockroach Opera Trilogy (Time Bomb, Cockroach Opera, Opera Julini), Burisrawa Conglomerate, Golden Triangle Broker, Succession, Prima Donna Opera, Sampek Engtay, Sissy Sue, Opera White Snake, Asylum or Mental Hospital, Greedy Love, Semar Sue, Constipation Opera, President of the Birds, Republic of Bagong, Signs of Love

As an actor, he performed in Woyzeck/Georg Buchner, The Threepenny Opera and The Good Person of Shechzwan/Bertolt Brecht, The Comedy of Error and Romeo Juliet/William Shakespeare, Women in Parliament/Aristophanes, Animal Farm/George Orwell, The Crucible/Arthur Miller, New Rich People and Tartuffe or Republic of Togog/Moliere, The Marriage of Figaro/Beaumarchaise.

During the regime in Indonesia in the 90’s his works were constantly banned but he never stopped, just like said he would.

Friends deemed him a Modernist, a true Rennaissance man. He is an architect, a designer and a publisher. His work ranges from creating a curved steel espresso machine to super light furniture, designing buildings in 13 countries, 25 years of teaching; fought fascim in both WW1 and WW2. His artistic disciplines has always been open to experimentation as “innovation was a natural fact of evolution”, Ponti reiterates and believed that art was a quotidian necessity – something that should be accessible and functional.

Giovanni “Gio” Ponti was born in Milan, Italy, (1891-1979)

is a vision of the future necessarily grounded on the reality of today?

It is always a good idea to start the year with fundamental questions.

What is emerging in our hearts?

What are aspirations?

expectations?

Start neutral

clean slate

clarity

Visions may or not be grounded on the reality of today, but may inspire and fill this world and next.

Artists are essentially truth seekers and they are moved by major disruptions in their surroundings or the universe at large or they are moved by a certain irrepressible vision of what is to emerge. They can’t help themselves other than to express their beliefs in some art form or rolled into an influencing movement.

Their voices are evocative, in fact disruptive, evoking discomfort in societies but most often for the better.

Dutch born visual artist, Mella Jaarsma has made Indonesia her home base. She is very much engaged with the artistic sphere in Yogyakarta where much of her art pieces are created, and exhibited in important platforms from the National Gallery Jakarta to the Venice Bienalle. Her work takes on an anthropological perspective: curious and respectful but, of late, deeply social if not political. In its expression, it is subtle, non-confrontational, clearly decolonizing - triggering us, the viewer, to ask questions, especially when the reality of the past makes for an unsettling feeling when seen from the context today. Her pieces are complex costume installations which reflect her peculiar way to address issues that captures her attention. From everyday objects, to almost extinct animals. Mella also brings to fore her subjects in a way that is evocative, enveloped with a strange or quirky sense of humor. Her focus is on forms of cultural and racial diversity out of the function of clothing and the way applied on the body.

Suproapto Suryodarmo (Prapto) studied free movement, Vipassana and Javanese Sumarah meditation techniques placing these practices within the nature, temple and human field. He developed a movement practice "Joged Amerta" based on improvisation and perception of our relationship with the natural world and the environment which cultivates an attitude towards life.

In 2017 Ines joined Prapto and a group of artists at his uniquely landscaped garden in Solo, Central Java for a whole week. That was the first time that Ines went to Candi Boko and practiced with Prapto. A session that marked her in such way that she has prepared this video as a tribute to the 1,000 days of his passing.

"When he invited me to move it hit me that we, all living creatures, come from one, singular consciuosness. That we are all one" Ines said.

As IDF Indonesian Dance Festival 2022 starts today, ESAS remembers Pak Prapto in this special way.

Do we sacrifice the planet or do we sacrifice ourselves?

On this special day of commemorating Eid Al-Adha we contemplate ‘climate’.

Whether as a crisis or opportunity, or simply our everyday experience, it is an all-embracing subject for Self expression and realization.

Run without interruption since 1769, the Summer Exhibition showcases art in all forms from painting, sculpture to archtecture by invited artists, Royal Academicians and emerging talent.

The theme chosen by the exhibition’s coordinator, Alison Wilding RA, is ‘Climate’.

Quote inspired by Shams Tabrizi.

This is the opportunity to include more female voices at the top…"

Sometimes new beginnings can really shift the course of a lifetime. That is the case of Jean Pascal when he travelled to Indonesia in 1991 to work for École Francaise d’Extrême Orient, a Jakarta based research center established by Louis Charles Damais; the one that inspired Jean’s recent writings for his Cultural Studies Master.

Graduated from La Sorbonne University in Paris, his past as a journalist for contemporary publishers seems far in the distance.

Not only opportunities kept Jean Pascal in Indonesia, but his fascination for a living culture, always moving and that prioritizes social relationship. Indonesia is home to him where he's found a chosen family of friends.

Amongst works he's translated is the Javanese Epic of the 19th Century: Serat Centhini.

Today he divides his professional time between writing essays and articles, translating books, subtitling films, and lecturing about Javanese culture and literature, about the spice route and Borobudur Temple.

“You have to believe first to allow what we cannot see, come out as our words because we do not know or do not want it to exist. After all, intelligence is also the ability to adapt to change and choosing, when possible, is a wonderful act.” said Carla Faesler in one of her writings.

With artistic blood flowing from her family of artists, she began her aesthetic side in 2000-2010 with the art and literature group; Motin Poeta. Later on, she maintains her works as writer and experimental poet following her award-winning "Anábasis maqueta" poetry book in Owen National Literature Award and "Formol" novel as the best book by La tempestad magazine in 2014.

The interdisciplinarity characteristic of Carla brought her to experiment with a different form of dialogue through photo poems, video poems, and cine poems. She has shown her work in several international literature festivals and has collaborated with artists such as Melanie Smith, Mariana Castillo Deball, and Francis Alys.

She studied Political Science and Administration, and later on she got her Masters in Development Studies, and Aesthetics & Theory of Arts. The love of academia which preceded her to political activism career and experimental poetry.

The start of fasting commencing this month of Ramadhan is determined by the first sight of the crescent moon (hilal) that appears above the western horizon.

Over time different methods of observing the start emerged, one other example referring the Hijri* Calendar, giving rise to much discussion if not debate what is right or preferred.

The hilal, as the beginning of a new cycle is auspicious for agriculture. It started 26 centuries ago in the new Babylonian period in Mesopotamia and continues to be used in other civilizations.

In any event, the passion to abide by what is the most proper, is a welcome rite, a beautiful Islamic tradition.

*Hijri calendar: Islamic lunar calendar consisting of 12 lunar months.
