Music West is a local voluntary community organisation, focused on education, participation and enjoyment of music in Mayo. We believe that music should be open to all and by bringing together music ensembles in Mayo to share music, skills and education. We provide affordable music tuition to encourage participation by people of any ability. Classes and instruments are provided at affordable or su

bsidised rents. Our classes run weekly and we can facilitate musicians ranging from novice beginners (children and adult) to experienced players who wish to add to their knowledge. Our tuition ranges from percussion and piano to wind, brass and stringed instruments. Music West also operates a number of musical ensembles which perform regularly and has affiliations with a wide range of other groups and ensembles. Whether you are a beginner, an experienced musician or a musician that hasn’t played in years we have the facilities to connect you with music in Mayo. We are based in our new state of the art purpose built premises in the Music West building in the Castlebar Business Park on the Breaffy Road. This building has a variety of rehearsal spaces available to rent for practice and rehearsal and other community activities. Today we are meeting our violin and piano teacher, Finola who has been a teacher at Music West for 14 years. She is classically trained to RIAM Grade 8 in piano & violin. Finola has been involved with our community groups for over 20 years, through the orchestras and classes. She, herself, plays violin with the orchestras thanks to adult classes through Music West. She avidly supports the joy that music brings through learning, performing and community here.
Finola brings a caring and positive ethos to her teaching via exams, film themes, songs, etc; and gaining skills to join our music ensembles.
She also teaches with Music Generation. Finola participates regularly in high-quality music training and also enjoys song-writing, singing circles, quartet groups; and trying out instruments, just for fun!

Our latest teacher to be profiled is, Catherine McGlinchey, MSc, Dip RIAM. She joined the Music West education team in 2022 and teaches clarinet, saxophone and piano, as well as the Early Years Music Magic pre-instrumental programme. She is passionate about helping children, young people and adults to experience the well-being benefits of musicianship for life.

After a busy career managing community based projects and working as a professional trainer, Catherine went full-time into teaching music, both privately and with Music Generation . During a sabbatical in France in 2018, she trained with Jazz Saxophonist, Willie Dubois in Orleans and toured with the L&Co saxophone ensemble.

Catherine plays saxophone with the Music West Big Band and conducts the High Flyers Community Orchestra . She is also Musical Director of the Westport Town Hall Community Choir and the very successful annual Community Pantos at Westport Town Hall.
