Ring and a Prayer, a documentary series which will broadcast from October 27 on RTÉ One, follows couples from different nationalities, cultures, ethnicities and faiths, as they plan their big day while navigating family politics and the pressure of mixing widely different cultures.
Gregory Donworth (30), an Irish American, met Uberoi (31), from New Delhi, in 2019 at a house party in Philadelphia when they were in the same graduate programme.
“Luckily, we both come from very open-minded families. As long as the primary set of values matched, they didn’t care who we married. I really wanted Greg to visit India before he proposed. In the West, everything happens and then you announce it to your family in the end. In the Eastern side of the world, your family walks with you through it,” explains Uberoi.
“The whole concept of a proposal was crazy to an Indian family,” Gregory says. “They just kept wondering why we needed to do anything more than the ceremony. It was wonderful to open myself up to Vaidehi’s world. There was a point when the Irishman in me was a little tense — I really wanted a beer during the ceremony but I had to wait until after!”
