Doom/Death stalwarts of the Irish metal scene and arguably ‘ONE OF THE BEST’ metal band to come out of Ireland. Never ones to rush themselves, they are methodical in their art and always put plenty of thought, patience and experience into each and every one of their release.
Mourning Beloveth began in winter 1992 but it wasn’t until 1996 that they recorded their first "untitled" demo. Recorded in eight hours, this demo contains two songs and is a raw indication of where MOURNING BELOVETH stood in the doom death scene. Two years later "Autumnal Fires" came to fruition. A 40-minute piece of music, it's songs intertwined with classical piano, it showed a huge progression in the writing and recording stakes. Receiving “Demo of the issue” in Moondance magazine, it is classed as Doom/Death and was their first step into achieving a sound of their own with the integration of clean vocals. Over 1200 copies of Autumnal Fires ware sold throughout the underground and the MB name spread.
Deciding to take a bold step, like so many of their contemporaries, they recorded in the famous Academy studios with Magz at the helm. What was produced after seven intense days of recording was "Dust", a sixty-six minute Doom masterpiece harking back to the days of the early Doom/Death scene with some of the heaviest and most melancholic music ever. The atmosphere and originality is helped by the greater usage of clean and growling vocals and the amazing production courtesy of Mags. They returned to Academy Studios and Mags again in 2002 to record "The Sullen Sulcus", a torturous and epic listen with six songs over 65 minutes.
Touring brought them far and wid including month long trek across the U.S. And when they returned home with sights set on their next album. The writing was long and the songs were sounding a bit different than before so they decided on a new studio, finally choosing Studio E in Germany run by Markus Stock, to record "A Murderous Circus". The album turned into a double album and the recording sessions over three weeks were arduous. They had created an album that while remaining in the confines of the death/doom scene has a lot of experimentation. The album is bleak, desolate and melancholic and the lyrics dealing with the excesses of man show another side of our sound which we was not present before.
Again returning to Studio E in Germany in October 2007. More focused during the recording sessions, that intensity comes out in the songs that emerged on "A Disease for the Ages", 5 songs over 56 minutes of torturous death/doom metal. Although recorded in the same studio as "A Murderous Circus" the sound is the polar opposite. The only conscious decision they made about the album before recording that the album must be heavy with a fuller sound. "AMC" had meandering and desolate guitars and almost revels in the human excesses, "ADFTA" fills your ears till they bleed.
As time slips by, MOURNING BELOVETH seem to revel in it's passing. They release a split 10" in 2009 with fellow Irish doom merchants WRECK OF THE HESPERUS, contributing an 8-minute cover of 'The Weeping Song' by NICK CAVE & THE BAD SEEDS. And eventually, five years after "ADFTA", they released another double album in "Formless", disc one with 5 songs and clocking in at 67-minutes and the second disc featuring the track 'Transmissions' - a haunting piece of spoken word with a simple guitar accompaniment. Thankfully the wait for it's follow-up wouldn't as long and "Rust & Bone" was released in late 2015 on Ván Records. Classed as a full length album it feels more like an EP in MOURNING BELOVETH standards. It features 3 primary lengthy tracks split by 2 shorter instrumentals.
The MB train has since slowed down again, with only a split release with THE RUINS OF BEVERAST coming out in 2020. But work is currently underway on their next album.
