With deadline for the 'Fiddles and Faeries' 5-minute, two dance tunes competition now passed and judges making their decision on the winner, I took an afternoon away from my computer and wandered with my collie, Siog, along the old railway tracks near Falcarragh, Donegal. And low and behold came to a bridge called 'Fiddlers Bridge.' Anyone out there know how it got its name?

Known scientifically as ‘the T60A mutation,’ it’s destroying lives throughout Donegal, and beyond. Thought to originate along a 15-mile stretch of coastline in the northwestern Irish county, it is associated with hATTR amyloidosis, colloquially called ‘Donegal Amy,’ a genetic condition that progressively debilitates its victims leading to a deteriorating quality of life and loss of function. It is often fatal.

❗That’s why part of the proceeds from the ’ New Year Eve fiddle-playing event will go towards helping victims of this terrible disease, along with other worthy charities in the region supporting people suffering from various life-threatening conditions, including diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer services, motor neurone disease, as well as su***de prevention and Lyme disease.

FREE EVENING OF MUSIC, SONG AND POETRY ON FRIDAY

Entrance to a lively evening of diverse music, song and poetry on the theme ‘Fiddlers and Faeries’ this Friday evening at 7.30 pm in Ionad Naomh Pádraig Dobhar in is FREE to both adults and children. Families are warmly welcome to come enjoy the fun.

Fiddle-playing breaking attempt.

Official kick-off launch this Friday 7.30 pm with a lively evening of music, song, poetry, dance, and onscreen world records presentation at Ionad Naomh Padraig, Gweedore.

Themed Fiddles and Faeries, Friday’s event features including an orchestral-style concert of more than 30 troubadours from all over and beyond, with maestros on fiddle, tin whistle, accordion, flute, uilleann pipes, mandolin, guitar and accordion, among other instruments.

Many of the and are award-winners with their own multiple CDs and some belong to the Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann, the primary Irish organisation dedicated to the promotion of the music, song, dance and the language of . Young and not-so-young, the musicians, live in towns across Donegal, including Falcarragh, Dunfanaghy and Bunbeg and Gortahork, Glenties, Lifford and Letterkenny.

They include Theresa Kavanagh, fiddle player and music teacher from Gortahork, Martin Crossin, uilleann pipe player and maker (Milford via Belfast) and maker, Tara Connaghan (Glenties via Ennis) and musician-singer-songwriter, Noel Lenaghan (Ramelton via Belfast).

Poets reciting their poems linked to faeries include Colette Gallagher, Letterkenny and Gweedore and Máire Dinny Wren, Gweedore. It is also hoped singers from The Song House will entertain the audience with their renditions.
