❌ MIRROR LAMP PRESS X THE COMPLEX ❌

The Mirror Lamp Press X The Complex's inaugural writer-in-residence Tara McGinn has released their final piece for the programme. Titled 'Not Drowning but Waving', it is a response to artist Bettina Seitz's exhibition 'Underwave', which took place at The Gallery last August.

McGinn's insightful response touches on wider themes of the role of borders and migration in Ireland, and globally, and is available to read or listen to now, on the Mirror Lamp Press website and at the link in bio.

Julie Morrissey will succeed Tara as writer-in-residence, holding the position until February 2025.

The residency is intended for visual arts writers who are seeking an opportunity to explore their critical voice in response to the activities of an art space. The selected writers have the opportunity to share their work with Mirror Lamp Press’ and The Complex’s audiences and extended networks. Responses are self-directed and developed in dialogue with the MLP editors and The Complex team.

❌ TU Dublin MA Show Artist Spotlight: Kat Lalor ❌

There's just 2 days to go until Waystation, the TU Dublin Graduate Fine Art exhibition opens at The Complex Gallery! Five talented artists have worked alongside Gallery curator Mark O'Gorman to create moments of flux and slippage acted out, documented, and archived within the multiplicities of The Complex Gallery - a space retains pasts from its storied life - from warehouse to gallery to Waystation. The artists generate portals into possible pasts and speculative futures, inviting viewers to cross thresholds and collaborate in world building.

Today we're highlighting our fifth and final artist, Kat Lalor!

Kat Lalor is a Q***r Visual Artist, using speculative fiction and performative film to explore the multiplicity of Q***r intelligibility. Operating from a position of other, Lalor’s work is invested in moments of tension, choice and slippage. Drag is adapted as a methodology of purposeful embodiment, used to interrogate theoretical and personal ponderings of identity. Subversion, absurdity and humor explore the fragility of narrative and knowledge production, putting pressure on dominant ideals and evoking intimacy with a Q***r experience.

Lalor graduated with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art from TU Dublin in 2022. They were a recipient of the Fire Station Artists’ Studios Digital Media Graduate Award (2022), and an Arts Council Agility Award (2022). Their work has since been exhibited in the RDS Visual Arts Awards (2022), and The RHA Annual (2023).

Waystation will run at The Complex Gallery on Arran Street East from 26 October - 2 November with a preview on Friday, 25 October 6-8 pm.

❌ OPEN CALL: STEP UP DANCE PROJECT 2025

Step Up Dance Project is a professional development programme for recent dance graduates or equivalent early-career dance professionals in partnership with the Arts Council of Ireland, Dance Limerick, the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance at the University of Limerick and Dance Ireland.

Step Up celebrates its 15th edition in 2025 and is delighted to offer an extended 8-week programme this year that will include six weeks of training and choreographic process with Philip Connaughton at Dance Limerick and the Irish World Academy, as well as two full additional weeks in the Moving in Collaboration International Intensive with Luail – Ireland's National Dance Company.

Step Up is looking for up to five dancers born or resident in Ireland who graduated in 2022 or since then. You’re also eligible if your professional dancing career has started since 2022 but you have come through other training routes that didn’t involve graduation.

This is an opportunity for dancers in the early stages of their professional careers. If you are only starting your career or graduating in 2025 you are not eligible. Previous Step Up participants who match the criteria above are eligible to apply again.

Curated by Fearghus Ó Conchúir with Dance Limerick Director Mary Wycherley and delivered under the guidance of Rehearsal Director, Lucia Kickham, the programme is focused on developing artists as performers while recognising the creativity necessary in the performer’s work.

As part of this year’s edition, dancers will have the chance to train with guest teachers, such as Finola Cronin and Mufutau Yusuf, who will provide them with a range of physical practices as well as a chance to hear from dance artists working in Ireland about how they sustain their practice.

The closing date for receipt of applications is Monday 25 November at noon IST. Please send your CV and a personal statement outlining your motivation to be involved in Step Up along with a web link to a 1-minute improvisation to [email protected]
