Lets take a minute to note that January 6th isn’t just the day to take the Christmas tree down—it’s Nollaig na mBan, or Women’s Christmas, a cherished Irish tradition.

Historically, it was a well-earned day of rest for women after making Christmas magical, while others stepped in to handle the chores. But it’s more than just a tradition—it’s a powerful reminder to celebrate women’s contributions at home, in the workplace, and beyond.

Domestic labour might be more balanced today, but disparities remain. Nollaig na mBan honours women’s roles, promotes equality, and keeps a meaningful part of Irish heritage alive.

Here at EPIC, we celebrate the incredible resilience, achievements, and impact of women from the Irish diaspora, women such as the Gore-Booth sisters, Annie Besant, and Kay McNulty, within the museum, 7 days a week.

The Gardai wondering how to put together a An Garda Siochana choir after hearing our NYPD choir singing ‘Galway Bay’... maybe their first single can be ‘New York, New York’ by Frank Sinatra?

Last Wednesday you might have noticed something a little out of the ordinary on your morning commute or your lunchtime walk. Driving through the streets, you could’ve sworn you saw a vintage NYPD cop car, playing what could only be described as Galway Bay out the windows. 🚔

No, it wasn’t a dream, or a mirage. That was us at EPIC, spreading awareness and fundraising for Dublin Simon Community, to give back this Christmas time. Playing our version of Galway Bay, that was actually performed by a NYPD choir that we assembled last year, bringing that famous line from Fairytale of New York to life for the first time.

Watch and share our video with family and friends around the world as we spread a bit of festive cheer this Christmas.

🌍 From the Russian Revolution to the Second World War, Moscow’s Hotel Lux was known as the ‘living quarters of the world revolution,’ where radicals from across the globe gathered.

In this talk, historian Dr. Maurice J. Casey will share the fascinating story of May O’Callaghan, a radical Irish journalist from Wexford, who lived in Room 5 at the Lux during the 1920s.

Why did an Irish woman move to revolutionary Russia? What were her experiences in the heart of the revolution, and how did she go from mingling with Soviet elites to dying in obscurity in a North London nursing home?
Join Dr. Casey as he unravels this forgotten history.

📆 Date: 4th December 2024
🕐 Time: 5.30pm - 6.30pm
📍 Where: EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum
